We are pretty much a shoes off house. DH and I both grew up in shoes off houses so we more did it out of habit. Plus when we had carpet it kept it cleaner, ie no muddy or wet shoes on it. But when people come over we dont make them take them off. Most people were pretty good about wiping off feet or just taking them off but I didnt care if they wore them.. thats what a vaccum and mop are for!

This is us too. Immediate family that comes over a lot takes off their shoes. If we have having company over or a party then we don't ask people to take their shoes off. I usually do a big cleaning after they leave anyway.
Oh, unless it's raining or snow... then I ask them, but most people do anyway.

My inlaws cook in the garage when they have huge parties.

That is strange, but I can see how it could be convienent. What do they cook on? Do they have a stove in there?

I always find it strange when people don't keep tissues in their house & use toilet paper to blow their nose. Equally starnge to me is that my in laws keep tissues in the kitchen, living room & den, but not the bathroom.

I also find it strange that my inlaws don't ever buy paper napkins, but they use cloth napkins, or paper towels.

I have never heard of dumping food down the toilet. Won't that clog it? I have occasionally dumped really rotten milk, but I learned that from DH.

They have these huge wok things, amd the "stove" is like a huge bunsen burner?

My mom cooks in the garage too! She has a convection oven, a rice cooker, a slow cooker and she uses the side burner from teh BBQ

She even treks out there in the snow LOL she does it to keep her kitchen clean

A co worker of mine, when she goes grocery shopping leaves the food in her trunk unless it needs to be refrigerated or frozen. So if her kids want cereal, they have to go to the garage and open the trunk to get it.

We are a shoe off house but not because we make anyone do it. DH & I never have shoes on at home and for some reason whenever people come inside they're always like ooh I have to take my shoes off! We don't know why, we've never asked anyone to it just always happens.

washing dishes then loading them in the dishwasher. Not just rinsing, completely washing them.

two sets of towels in the bathroom, never sure which one I should be using. Causes me bathroom anxiety.

Having a dishwasher and never, ever using it. What's the point? MIL does this, even when a lot of us are over eating, she does it all by hand and her dishwasher works and is fairly new.

leaving shades open or not having shades at all so everyone can see everything that is going on in your house. I swear you can see my neighbor's every move from across the street because they have no shades!

this is my mil... she has huge bay windows wit curtains but never closes them. my bf hates it so he will go and close them and then she flips out and opens them. i feel so uncomfortable at night since everyone can see in and we cant see out. Chat Icon

I do this sometimes. I feel like a dish isn't really "clean" unless it goes through the dishwasher. That made me sound anal and I am really not I swear!

OMG my mom does this! She says it uses more water to rinse everything and then dishwash it than it does to just wash everything by hand.

That might be true, but it uses *less* water to just let the dishwasher wash the dishes without rinsing.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sometimes I do this. I don't trust my own cleaning so I like the extra clean idea. Also.. the dishwasher DRIES the dishes.. which is awesome.

Really strange! What happens if she isn't home with the car and someone who is home wants to eat?

the asking of people to remove their shoes is a big one for me. I never understand why people do that....isnt that what vacuums, brooms and mops are for? to clean up anything the is on the floors?? Chat Icon

I would love to know if the people that make others take off their shoes, if their floors stay clean...and never need cleaning? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon If so, Im going to start being a "shoes off" house!

This thanksgiving i did not ask my guests to take their shoes off, but me and my DH always take our shoes off.

I did ask guests to wear rubber soled shoes, just because my issue is not with dirt but with wear and tear on my wood floors.

Its just us, and yes our floors never get dirty, and they are vacuumed and mopped once a week.

This is my SIL. She likes to wash them by hand rather than use the dishwasher.
To me, I think running dishes through the dishwasher cleans/sanitizes them better. I trust it more than ME doing it. LOL.

As for the shoes, I take my shoes off in our home. DH sometimes does/sometimes doesn't. DS got into the habit of taking his off as well. I never ask guests to remove their shoes.
A lot just do it. Even my DDs therapists do just because they want to (I guess they feel it's more sanitary that way too).

The reason we are a shoes off house is for:
1. cleanliness - there is a lot of dirt, mud, gunk, poop, and any other bad stuff you stepped on during the day on the bottom of your shoes. If you sit on the floor or other people sit on your floor do you want your hands to touch what is on the ground outside? I feel like we are so much healthier by being a shoes off home. You still need to clean.

2. We have new carpets. I don't want the junk from shoes on our floors. We don't eat in rooms that have carpets.

I do the same thing for the same reasons.

Sorry but I would find it very odd and actually rude if you invited me to a holiday at your home and then told me what kind of shoes I had to dress in so that you could avoid wear and tear on your floors.

Re: Things people do at their home you find "strange"

I am now a shoes off home but I don't really enforce it. My house has wall to wall carpet in the palest beige EVER and you can see every little speck of dirt. It drives me CRAZY but we're renting this house so we're stuck with it. I think I'd only ask someone to remove their shoes in bad weather.. but when my landlord comes over he takes his shoes off too so I'm really just following his lead.

I also wash all my dishes by hand and put them in the dishwasher, but that's because I don't like this dishwasher. I've used it twice and it put some black stuff all over everything, so now I just use it as a dishrack. I want a new dishwasher. Chat Icon

Re: Things people do at their home you find "strange"

As far as the shoe thing goes, think about all the bacteria, feces, gook, and dirt you walk in while out and about. Now you're tracing that all over your floors? YUCK! I always take my shoes off once I enter to keep the contaminates down. We also never walk around barefoot. It's slippers or socks on after shoes are off.

I never understood multiple sets of towels in the bathroom. I never know which one to use: the decorative ones, the raggedy one, or both! (I usually go for the decorative ones since they're probably cleaner, but could be wrong.)

My IL's store their pots and pans in the oven and then have to take them all out when they bake. When DH and I first lived together he would do this and we ruined a few pots because I would turn the oven on to preheat without even thinking that there would be something already in there!Chat Icon

My stepsister only has a window AC in her room and nothing for the guest room/rest of the house
