why do people (close friends and family) have to comment about the names we have chosen for our DC?
Seriously???
I got sooooooooooooooo fed up today I thought I was goig to scream.
Our DD is Victoria - we knew it was going to be Victoria from the beginning.
Now we have Lexi (alexandria) for girl and Matteo for boy
Am I hearing it left and right!
Lexi.... since when is Lexi short for alexandria??? they ask - i thought since always!
What is Matteo? Never heard of that!
Its a version of Matthew!

This is the reason we keep our DC's names to ourselves until after the delivery.

Before we found out we were having a boy, I told my MIL some of the girl names we were thinking of (Margene, Grace) and MIL made fun of them both. She thought Margene was too much like margarine and said, "Why not just name your baby Oleo? That's what it means, isn't it?" .

Just like PP said, that's why we don't tell ANYONE our names until the baby is born. We don't want to have to deal with people's opinions on names that we have fallen in love with. I also think it's hugely different for family members to think about a name by itself as opposed to hearing that name while looking at their newest grandchild/niece/nephew, etc. Once they see that little face, it is much harder to separate the name from the baby and have negative feelings about it.

I agree with the PP's. I've shared our name with some close friends and my mom but anytime anyone else asks I just say we're not sure yet.

We didnt share with anyone. I knew I was not ready to hear everyones opinions. I would just tell people "we are not sharing that. It is just for us."

First time mommy to be here and made the same mistake as you. Told my mother the names we were thinking of... She had no prob with the traditional Italian boys name but reacted with "eww.. Really? Why would you pick that name" for the girls name Lia that I love. After I told her that her suggestions were not wanted, she calls the very next day with a list of alternative girls names. I was soooo angry that I told her if she wanted to name another child she should have had another one. And then I hung up the phone. Soooo rude. And she seems to think it's just my hormones overreacting

We didnt tell people the name for this reason but also because I wanted to meet the baby first. for example when I gave birth to DS #1, it was an emergency c-section. When they put him near me, I thought to myself "oh he is John Thomas" but while I was in recovery DH brought me pics of him all cleaned up and we both agreed "He's Joseph Thomas".

this is why we won't tell anyone what are name choices are, everyone has a comment. when he is born they will find out his name.

Our ILs are terrible about commenting.

We learned with the first 2 to just keep our mouths shut and tell them once we have decided.

With our ds we didn't tell anyone - we just told them the gender & then made up a fake name that we referred to him by all the time. We have a very French sounding last name, so we referred to him as "Jean-Claude" the entire pg. People would gasp & go "um really?" and we'd reply with "No - but your reaction is exactly why we're not telling anyone!" lol That always broke the tension, they'd laugh & we'd move on.

We're going to do the same thing this time, but with a different name...although if it's a boy we may refer to him as Jean-Claude Part Deux

I went through the same thing with my dd. NOBODY liked the name Lara and they had no problem telling me and my dh that Well as you can see we didnt care we still named her Lara. With this baby were naming him Aiden so far nobody has said anything but im sure someone will have a comment and guess what I DONT CARE its my baby not theirs. Dont let anyone try to sway you from the names you really like.

Some family members dont like the names that we picked, but I dont care. Its not their kid and I have no problem telling them that.

People have different tastes, not everyone is going to like the same names.

Lexi is short for ALexandria? I have never heard of that and honestly if somebody said that I would too, but not because it's a bad name...I LOVE it. I have just never heard of that nickname.

Some of our family know ds's name and so far people love it! The thing is my brother calls him Hunter since it's deer season and we hate that name for OUR ds. I think the more my brother calls him that the more I dislike it. He made him a onsie with a deer on it and it said Hi I'm Hunter as a joke. I was so livid!!!! It's just so rude to refer to someones dc as something else when they have expressed serious anguish over it.

My Theory: Everyone has an opinion before it is attached to a cute lovable baby...but once the baby is here and is called by that name, they can't help fall in love!

First off, Lexi is a very common nickname for any Alex name (Alexa, Alexandra, Alexandria, etc).

Second, people need to really watch what they say! Ugh!

We didn't tell ANYONE our name options with DS. Everyone wanted to know and we just said either we weren't sure or we weren't ready to share. We also didn't have a set name so that helped too.

This time, same thing. We are not sharing with anyone our list. I would be really hurt and to be honest, I would probably be swayed if our parents or siblings/BFFs said they hated the names we're considering. So we're just going to keep it to ourselves.

we only told our parents bc even if they didn't like the name i know they wouldn't actually say it, they would just pretend to like it other than a few select people we've kept the name a secret...i've told other people though like my neighbors and strangers but i have a few obnoxious family members and i would prefer not to hear their opinion...
