WWYD? Third bedroom/nursery dilemma

DH &I have been talking baby the last few months. This weekend I made a comment on having to turn the guest bedroom into a nursery. DH didn't agree and said we should turn our unused smaller 3rd room instead. This way we keep the guest bedroom for when people come visit and finally make use of the third room we have been using as a closet.

The third bedroom is about half the size of the guest bedroom. It would be able to fit a crib, dresser changing table and rocker but no open play space (we have an unenclosed den that could be turned into the play room) I just don't see the point in giving our (future) child the smallest room in the house and leaving a guest bedroom in place that is only used 4-5the times per year!

What is everyones opinion? I get that the baby will be in our room 6-8to months anyway but that smaller room at best will hold a twin size bed when they're bigger so we'd have to move them to bigger room eventually! Especially if we had a second baby!

Re: WWYD? Third bedroom/nursery dilemma

when the time comes get rid of the guest room and put some sort of daybed in the 3rd room(something that will fit)
how often do you have guest stay?

I agree with you. My child would get the bigger room.
A guest room only needs a bed and dresser.
A nursery needs a lot more!

Re: WWYD? Third bedroom/nursery dilemma

We have our nursery as the smallest room for now.

In the beginning they dont need floor space to play and once our DS gets biggger we will then reevaluate the rooms because it might mean us moving downstairs.

Re: WWYD? Third bedroom/nursery dilemma

We only have guests maybe 4-5 times a year. And it’s not even long periods of time. This year my sister came to visit w/her kids from OOT of 2 weeks. She usually stays @ my parents but her trip happened around Irene and my parents lost power so everyone ended up @ my house. Then we had other friends who lost power during the summer heat so they stayed just 1 night with us. We had other times when an out of town friend unexpectedly stayed with us. But I don’t think these visits/guests are frequent enough to keep the large room as a guest bedroom. Our guest bedroom has our old Queen bed before we got our King; that Queen wouldn’t fit into the 3rd bedroom so we’d have to get a daybed or something to go in there if we made the guest bedroom a nursery and wanted to keep a place for visitors to stay.

I guess who knows if family would visit more once we have a kid but there's no guarantee.

ONLY plus is that the 3rd room was already painted a neutral yellow so we literally would only have to move furniture into it.

Do you also have a larger room then that you're using as a guest bedroom or office?

I intentionally purposed any "guest bedroom" rooms to make sure I didn't have a convenient guest bedroom, so you can guess which way I would lean.... Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would use the bigger room as the baby's room. My son was only in my room for about 3-3.5 months in a bassinette, then he moved into his own room with his crib. He doesn't play in his room that much (we have a den and also a finished basement), but I wanted him to have a room to grow into as he gets older. And I didn't want to have to shuffle the rooms around in a couple of years.

But we only use our guest room very sporadically (it's an office the rest of the time), so a guest room is not a big issue for us. Even if you use your guest room often, though, it's not used every day the way your child's bedroom would be, so I would still use the larger room for the baby's room.

Yes right now the bedroom on our first floor is the guest room/office. It is the middle sized room.

I would give the bigger room to the baby and make the smaller room the guest room.

Unless you want to make the baby have the smaller room for now and switch it when they get to be a few years old.

IMO all a guestroom needs is a bed.

Re: WWYD? Third bedroom/nursery dilemma

I think it would make sense if you plan on having another baby within a few years. Then you could just move your oldest to the bigger room at that time and keep the nursery for the new baby.
If not I would probably just use the bigger bedroom for your first baby.

My DH would probably try this! I agree with OP though. The baby should get the bigger room.

Re: WWYD? Third bedroom/nursery dilemma

we have a 3 bedroom house. one room is a fully furnished guest room (full bed headboard and footboard, full dresser and 2 night tables) and the other is an office ($$ desk, book shelf).
when the time comes we will be turning the guest room (larger of the 2) into the nursery. we plan to put the bed in the attic and just replace with a crib keeping the dresser.

we have friends that sleep over once in a while but the sofa will have to do when the time comes.

if i were you i would give the baby the larger room and get a fouton for the 3rd bedroom for guests.

I agree. I mean how often do your really plan on hosting over night guests? And that old adage, guests like fish start to smell after a few days.

Another point in favor of the child getting the larger room is that there may be nights where you are on the floor shushing them to sleep. I would not want to be cramped. Also they can have their toys in the room.

Re: WWYD? Third bedroom/nursery dilemma

I'd make the guest room into a nusery--although what you could do is have the small room be a "baby" room, and then you can move the kid to the larger room when they are ready for a big boy/girl room. You may have a second child by then, and you would then use the small room for the nursery again.

Little babies don't need space to play really in their own rooms. By 2/3 they will want to do things in their own room.

Re: WWYD? Third bedroom/nursery dilemma

My child would have the bigger bedroom. It makes no sense to me to block a room for guests that show up a handsfull of times in years and a child who lives home everyday.

Not even a question.

I agree with this. If you are willing to make a switch in the future, then I could see using the smaller room as the nursery for now and then switching when the baby goes in to a toddler bed or something.

THANK you!! I know i'm not crazy!! I WANT to make the guest bedroom the nursery; it's DH that wants to keep it a guest bedroom!

I agree with everyone on here! We have guests MAYBE 10 nights out of the entire YEAR. Our kid should be able to get the bigger room!

Re: WWYD? Third bedroom/nursery dilemma

Defintely use the bigger room! DD is now 18 months and she has her crib, dresser, changing table (which is also a dresser), glider and still has space for a play area. It is nice not to have all her toys all over the place!

WHy should people who stay 4-5 time per year get more space then someone who lives there full time???

Re: WWYD? Third bedroom/nursery dilemma

Our nursery is probably smaller than our guest room, but my family/friends lives in MD so we need at least a full size bed in the guest room. When he is playing more, we can switch rooms if he wants. We also have a finished basement (with another guest room) that will eventually become a playroom though.

I would use the bigger room as a nursery/bedroom and the smaller room as a guest room. Its not used as often and its only used to sleep in really so it doesnt need to be big!
