Horrible diaper rash......only 2 wks old
I feel so bad for my dd. She is only 2 wks old and has had a horrible diaper rash since she was in the hospital. I was using balmex and my doctor told me to use aquaphor instead. That wasn't working so I took her back yesterday and the doctor wrote me a script for some ointment to use 3 times a day and told me to use butt paste the other times I change her. Since then, it actually looks worse. It is bright red and swollen. She also poops 8 times a day which doesn't help at all. Anybody know of anything that will help get rid of this QUICK? She screams bloody murder every time I change her and I feel so bad

I dont really have advice on horrible diaper rash but I started off using butt paste and didnt like it at all! Switched to Triple Paste and I love it!

I would let her go without a diaper for a few hours at a time. Maybe lay her down on top of a waterproof pad so her butt can air out, all the moisture is bad for it. MY dd just got over a horrific diaper rash, but she is 17 months and cannot go without a diaper b/c she would poop all over the house!
Also use a diaper cream that has zinc as the main ingredient.

Please only use corn starch powder if you are 1000% sure that its not a yeast infection. I used it on my son and his rash became even worse. Yes, my son had a yeast infection and the yeast fed on the corn? and made it 10x worse :( Honestly, since she is just a baby and is not mobile I would keep her diaperless and keep her clean. Lay her on a bunch of towels. I believe the one thing that ended up working for us was Nystatin. Good luck.

Im so sorry to hear that. Then again its only been a few hours. Give it a day. I have to say we went through quite a few prescriptions before we found one that worked. I know its so hard when you know your baby is hurting  I really think the key is keeping her diaper off and her dry. So much easier before theyre mobile.

I had the same problem at that age with DS. I tried EVERYTHING.
First of all, don't use baby wipes. Use disposable cloths with just plain water. I got mine at a surgical supply store. You might also be able to use super soft paper towels in water, but make sure it's not rough.
My original doc told me to put vaseline and corn starch and butt paste on it. I felt like I was making a cake. My mom told me I was putting too much on him and she ignored my instruction when she watched him one day and only put the butt paste on. I hate to say it, but she was right. It got better really fast with JUST butt paste.
The rash disappeared for a few weeks, but recently came back when I started using wipes again (even the sensitive ones). I actually tried just Desitin before it got too bad and it went away.
Good luck! I feel your pain! I HATED knowing my LO was in pain every time I changed him!!

Our DD had the most awful diaper rash when we got her home from the hospital. The antibiotics they gave her in NICU actually caused the rash and her butt was almost purple and skin was cracking/peeling like she had a legit burn.
Our doc told us to use butt paste and not aquaphor. She also recommended what others have said here, and to leave her diaperless on a waterproof pad for awhile to just let her air out. It made a world of difference and within 2.5 days the rash went away with the combination of butt paste and allowing her to air out. We would put her on her belly and knees and let her butt kind of stick out in the air for awhile. I think that was the key to the rash going away!
I'm so sorry you're going through this. That horrible scream they make when you change the diaper would bring me to tears with each diaper change too.

Awww, I'm so sorry to hear that. DD has had some bad diaper rashes and I know how hard it is to see them like this! It sounds like it's fungal since they gave you the nystatin. If it doesn't look better in a day or two I'd call and tell them, there are other things they can give you if that isn't working. In the meantime, as others mentioned try to air her butt (while still keeping her warm)! Letting the air get to it while you have nothing on the skin (before you put the ointment on) has worked wonders for me. Poor mommy and baby, I hope your LO is feeling better soon!
ETA- Not sure if your doctor mentioned it but I was told not to use baby wipes when they have a rash. I was told to use tissues and water, sometimes I'll even just rinse out the baby wipes to get the soap and whatnot out of them and just use the water to clean her. That also seems to help a lot.

My DD had this around that age.
What I realized was that I didn't know how to care for her butt properly. I would use wipes then immediately slather on vaseline (which they told us to do in the hospital)> What I didnt realize was that doing this was actually sealing IN the moisture and thats what created the rash.
What I did was STOP using baby wipes since htey leave behind a slathery slimy soapy film on the butt. I started taking soft Viva paper towels OR cotton pads and squeeze them in water to wipe her when she pooped. Also did frequent baths to soothe the area and I would patt dry the butt after wiping with the water and paper towels. Only then would I apply vaseline or desitin, etc.
Even now at 3, she gets rashes easily. Starting age 1, I started using cornstarch powder to help dry her after wiping. This helped alot too.
Any time she is getting rashy, I give her a warm bath, and make sure to change her OFTEN to remove wetness. And I always have to apply cornstarch powder or she WILL get a rash from teh friction.
I hope this works for you and your LO gets better soon. IT's so upsetting when they are so young and get a rash but I promise you what I did works.
Key thing to remember, you cannot apply ANY kind of creams if there is any wetness at the time. It must be dry or you willl create a rash by sealing in the wetness by applyign creams over moist tissue.

I posted above but wanted to add...I actually dont think its a reaction to the wipes. What I found is.... I think its just the wipes leave too much lotiony type residual and that moisture causes the rash, esp if you apply a cream right over the moist skin. That's my experience with my DD anyway. Just wanted to throw t his out there.
Even now at 3, if I do NOT apply cornstarch after using wipes, my DD gets a rash from the lotion left behind from a wipe. I have to use cornstarch to dry that up before diapering or putting on underwear.

ITA! When DS got the most horrific diaper rash, we also used wet viva papertowels to clean the area (after I did that, I would also use wet cotton swabs, and use them to get the parts where the poop wouldnt come off with the paper towel-since it was smaller I could control it better and not be rubbing over and over which would irritate it more). then I would pat it dry with a dry viva papertowel. Then only after it was completely dry, put on the triple paste. I will also say different creams work for different kids, my DS does great with diaper paste, my DD does better with A&D ointment. Since your DC is so young, I would do what the other posters said about laying ont he stomach to dry out the rash alittle. Hopefully if you do all this is will get better day by day

This happened to my DS when he was 5 weeks old, it was red and sore so the doctor suggested I use bacitracin and no wipes and that cleared it up.

I didn't like it either. Try putting a layer I'd ointment aquaphor, a d, or Vaseline then balmex or desitin

this is what I as going to say. I remember when my DD stayed in the hospital for the weekend when she was 8 weeks old and because of the constant temps up the butt that they were taking it left a horrible rash. the nurse there told me the best thing to do is let the fresh air get at it. I would try to let her air it out as much as possible and see how that works. and I have always used desitin. for some reason I love it and think it works great on both of my kids. good luck!

My DS had a horrible diaper rash soon after we took him home from the hospital and it got worse and worse, even after our ped prescribed the ointment 3 X a day, it got to a point where his skin looked completely raw, it was awful. This went on for a couple of weeks of pure torture, we went diaperless, tried it all. Since nothing was working I thought to switch from the pampers sensitive we were using to Huggies and within 1 day it started to heal and within one week he was back to normal. He was allergic to the chemicals in the pampers. It's funny because with ds#1 all I ever used was pampers and never had an issue but with ds#2 I would never buy again because of how bad it was. Definitely try switching and hopefully that will help, it's worth a try.

we always use aquafor and when its really bad we use triple paste my lil ds had a bad rash from my breast milk

my DD had terrible rashes as an infant.
Try a combination of things...
What worked best for us was always 1st a layer of aquaphor, then max strength desitin (purple tube)....change it up though - in place of desitin try Lotrimin...works great! It's buy the athlete's foot and jock itch sprays/creams. A rash is a fungus and Lotrimin is for a fungus...I buy the Target Up & Up brand - it's a lot cheaper.

It sounds like what my DD had as an infant...hers were a "yeast infection" rash, and the doctor prescribed Nystatin ointment.
However the nystatin rubbed off so easily! So we ended up putting it on and I would literally hold a clean diaper and "fan" her off with it, until the cream was a bit dried onto her toosh and then diaper her up.
I also let her go naked as much as I could to air things out...
And would sometimes put the triple paste right OVER the nystatin to have it hold the cream in.

HI has the dr considered that DC may have a milk allergy? this also happen the rash and fequent poops to my DD.. all u have to do is bring a dirty dr to dr office to get it tested..GL
