Hershey Park flooded!

I'm still looking at articles, but just search for Hershey Park flooding, and you'll see tons of stories. They lost two of their bison from ZooAmerica, and the park is closed right now.

They didn't just die, they let the flooding in their pen become so bad that they couldn't get them out and when they started to drown they were put to sleep.

I saw it on the news last night with a picture of them and the water 95% covering their bodies. I am upset no one figured a way to get them out BEFORE their pen flooded.

http://www.coaster-net.com/news/1581-hersheypark-loses-two-bison-in-flood/
Flash flooding enveloping Hersheypark and the surrounding has lead to the tragic death of two of ZooAmerica's bison. At around 5pm Wednesday night the Zoo staff was forced to make the decision to euthanize the animals rather than letting them drown.

Hersheypark announced in a press release that the staff at ZooAmerica began preparing for possible flooding brought on by Tropical Storm Lee two days ago by moving animals to higher ground. At around noon today they launched their animal evacuation plan to attempt to get all of their animals to safety. This plan had been successful in rescuing animals in all past weather events.

Unfortunately the water from the flooding rose faster than expected. Hersheypark stated that the water level rose from a few inches to a few feet in a matter of minutes. During this time the staff was able to save the majority of the animals. However, the water in the area that the bison resided in rose too quickly.

After it became apparent that the bison were not going to be able to be rescued the staff was faced with an extremely difficult decision. The staff decided to prevent the bison from going through the suffering of drowning by euthanizing them, however one bison drowned in the rising waters before it could be euthanized.

The staff at the Zoo are feeling the loss deep within their hearts. The press release mentioned that the staff view the animals as members of their extended families. A portion of the release states, "This is a very sad day for us, as we've built strong bonds with all the animals in our care. We can tell you that each of us feels this loss very deeply."

ZooAmerica, which sits on 11 acres of land next to Hersheypark is home to more than 200 animals. These 200 animals are members of around 60 different species. The vast majority of these 200 animals made it out of the flood safely, but unfortunately the two bison did not.

They only had a few minutes to rescue all the animals.... Chat Icon

Actually one was put to sleep, the other drown. Sad situation all around, but reading Hershey's statements, I think they did what they could given the time frame they had to work with before the water rose really high.

I have friends in that area, and the flooding came on fast and fierce. No one thought the water would rise as fast as it did.

I assumed so, but what I mean was they were big animals and I was surprised they couldn't get out.

I didn't realize they only had minutes, the news clip I saw said both were put down as they started to drown, definitely didn't get into how they were prepared but the rains came on too fast.

The photo they showed broke my heart, I love animals so much and wish they could have been saved.

Their FaceBook page explaining a little more about what happened.

They have an evacuation plan, and they started implementing it on Monday. The flooding just happened so fast that there really wasn't anything they could have done.

Re: Hershey Park flooded!

People are blaming the zoo (I was there on Sunday actually), and there was nothing they could do. Just on Sunday there was a flash storm that came up, and there was 5 inches of water in less than 20 minutes. Its a sad situation
