So-lost my job today, talk to me about being a SAHM

I'm 8 months pregnant so I'm not getting hired anywhere anytime soon.

Coming from being a FTWM with a good income to being a SAHM for the forseeable future is leaving me feeling a little insecure. Exposed.

Anyone feel that way when they made the adjustment? How long does it take to go away? I just need it to go away.

I was also laid off when I was (very newly) pregnant with DS2. It took me a few weeks to realize what a blessing in disguise it was for me and my family. I had worked since I was 16. I never thought I had the option to NOT work! I was perfectly content leaving the hard parts of raising my children to the experts, in my case a wonderful nanny! Regardless, that was over 3 years ago and I wouldn't trade any second of any day for anything! I have gotten to spend all the awesome (and definitely the s#cky ones too!) moments with my kids. I get to take them to the zoo, to the pool, to the park, etc that I was only able to do on my weekends or a day off. I give working moms sooo much credit as I have no idea how they are able to balance their work with their "life". It wasn't until I was laid off that I realized I wasn't very effective at it.

The hardest part for me, at the beginning, was to not be "wanted". It wasn't the actual laying of, it was the rejection

Re: So-lost my job today, talk to me about being a SAHM

I was laid off when I was 7 months pregnant and I'm not gonna lie I was scared shitless!!!!! Hubby Wolsey or a very small company and I was very much afraid we won't b able to make it... But I knew deep down in my heart that it was a blessing in disguise and bot was I right! No way would I be able to just stay home with zero pay and this way I'm getting unemployment and after calculating how much a babysitter would cost plus the cost of commute and lunches it came out that we're not losing much so I get to enjoy my wonderful son! He's 5 months now and I can't even imagine not being home with him! I hated my job anyway but was too insecure to leave it so they kind of made the decision for me! I'm not gonna b a sahm for ever but for now I'm not rushing back into the workforce!
U will never get this time back so sit back and enjoy the best ride of your life!!

Re: So-lost my job today, talk to me about being a SAHM

Chat Icon I'm very sorry.

I got laid off 6 weeks before I was due (my company went out of business). DH and I were so scared of losing my income and I worried if I was cut out to be a SAHM. Like some PP said, it ended up being a blessing in disguise. It took a few weeks to adjust but I am so happy now. Everything will work out!

Re: So-lost my job today, talk to me about being a SAHM

i was told about my lay-off when i was 5 months. Had to work there for another two months before i never went back. they treated my horribly those last few months. i left with lots of resentment. then the fear kicked in.
i have been home for over a year now. the first 4-5 months i felt inadequate and like not a member of society. i felt lower than human. it didn't help that DS spent most of the first 6 months crying and being fussy.
Now i feel better. DH really helped make me feel like staying home WAS productive. (going back to school also helped me)

i know this can't last forever as we'll never survive on one salary, but i am very grateful that i got to spend the first year of DS's life at home with him =)

Re: So-lost my job today, talk to me about being a SAHM

I just officially quit my job the other day. I knew all along I was not going back to work but somehow actually saying it out loud and making it official gave me mixed emotions. I feel very fortunate that I am able to stay home with DD (now 2 months) and be financially secure. However, there is definitely a part of me that is sad to see that part of my life end. It's a bitter sweetness IMO. I love that I will get to be there for all of DD's firsts and that I have the time now to do all of the things I want to with her.............but I realized that I just gave up the one thing in my life that was truly "mine" - KWIM?? I had a really great career - worked in the fashion district, great colleagues, social lunches and dinners, travel, etc. - but realistically the commute and hours would mean that I would hardly see DD during the week and even when I was home, I know I would either be too exhausted or mind boggled to really enjoy her.

Like I said, I always knew I would be a SAHM - DH and I had discussed it long before I even got pregnant. But when I got off the phone with my boss, I sat there and cried. It still makes me a little sad when I think about it, but I know I am making the right decision for my family. It's definitely going to take some getting used to. DH has always made a significant amount more than me and therefore been the main source of our income. I paid for my car, insurance and school loans. He paid for our living expenses and pretty much all luxuries. It's going to be wierd not contributing financially but DH is so supportive. I think my biggest concern is trying to figure out who I am now. I know I am DH's wife and Ella's mommy but is that it?? Don't get me wrong - I LOVE LOVE LOVE being a mommy. But it is taking me a little bit of time and patience to adjust to this new life. I am used to getting up and going every day and being on the go non-stop. Funny bc I was so excited for when I would finally be able to slow down a bit. Now that I can, I find myself getting a little stir crazy. Luckily DD is a really content and easy going baby, so taking her out and about has been pretty easy.

I have been making some "me" time. I'm lucky that DH's work schedule is flexible and my mom lives nearby. They help out with DD so that I can go take Pilates and go to Zumba. Sometimes I feel so guilty leaving DD, but then I remind myself that it's ok to have some time to myself and it's probably very important that I do. It's helping me to adjust to this new lifestlye. That would be my one main bit of advice. Find something that you enjoy doing FOR YOU. Even if it's one day a week. It's a little tough in the beginning to get used to, but it gets easier. Think of all of the things you can look forward to and you will find yourself getting more and more excited. I'm totally looking forward to the Fall - which is my favorite time of year. I can't wait to take DD pumpking picking, go to the farms, take walks in the cool weather, etc.

Sorry for my ramble - I just read your post and it hit a little close to home bc I was just feeling the same way about the whole adjustment thing. Chat Icon

Re: So-lost my job today, talk to me about being a SAHM

UGH! I'm so sorry (hug) to hear this.

I felt kinda vulnerable for a while. I stopped working when I was 7 months PG with Noah , whose now 4 and I'd say till he was close to 2 and I got PG with the twins, I felt that way. Now I have no choice in any matter so much, so I except where I am.

The biggest decision for you will be if your gonna STAY a sahm or not. Be secure in that decision and then the rest will come...will follow...

LOTS Of luck!

Re: So-lost my job today, talk to me about being a SAHM

So sorry your going thru this. I was laid off after 14yrs @ same company. I cried for weeks and was scared sheetless!
When my pitty party was over I started living out my new chapter of being a mother and better girlfriend. I have a wonderful boyfriend who supports me and I have saved some $$ by living below my needs.
I refuse to let a lay off get me down I still look daily for something (a job) that appeals to me. Im hoping to get some babysitting gigs to earn extra $$ in the meantime.
I hope this works out for you & your family and you enjoy this opportunity. Chat Icon Chat Icon
