WWWD regarding MIL wanting to buy you a gift. WithPoll
DH's Mom and Aunt live in CA. I just got an email from her that they would like to come and visit us sometime this month and while here they would like to take me shopping to buy something I really want like a Glider or Changing Table.
Here's my internal debate. The Glider I want (and intended on just buying myself) is a Dutalier and is about $500. The Changing Table I'm looking at getting is about $100.
What would you do? Let them buy you the Glider (assuming they are ok with the price) or the table.
I have a really hard time with people spending a ton of money on me, so that's why I'm asking.

Let them do something nice for you! My DH's uncles offered to buy my crazy expensive stroller and at first I was uncomfortable but they wouldn't offer if they didn't want to do it for you! So enjoy it while it lasts ya know?!

If they want to spend it go for it. Both my grandparents have purchased above and beyond for their future great grand twins. Grandpa bought the Bumbleride twin stroller and grandma bought both convertible car seats and the glider. I guess my point is sometimes your family can surprise you.

That's really nice and generous of them to do! I feel the same way as you, im uncomfortable with people buying large gifts for us. So, I would let them know the general price of the glider beforehand if they're still ok with it, then go for it!

I would say go for the glider. In my mind its 2 people chipping in, unless you know their financial situation.
ETA: I think if someone only wanted to spend a certain amount of money I think they might say something like "I'd like to give you $100 to put towards your glider."

I would give them the option of buying whichever they feel comfortable with, tell them about both and whichever they buy then fabulous!

Definitely the glider. It's a lifesaver. A changing table is kind of useless for us. If the glider you want is over their budget, ask for money towards it.

Re: WWWD regarding MIL wanting to buy you a gift. WithPoll
Thanks ladies! It is so amazingly generous of her and her sister to want to do this for me. I spoke with DH about it last night and he thinks that MIL knows how much the glider is. He had told her a couple of weeks ago that we had the crib and dresser and we were saving up for the glider and had told her at that time how much it was. He said that he'll remind her again and see what she says. If she still wants to get it for us, I will not stop her!

That was what I was going to write as well. I have to say just because it's her grandchild may not mean she wants to spend a lot of money on furniture right now. I think the option is nice and she may also be suprised buy how much a glider and ottoman really costs. I know my Mom almost had a freaking heartattack and suggested she should buy me a Lazy-Boy instead since it was cheaper then the glider

I would say the glider. Do you want a seperate changing table? What about a changing pad that goes on the top of a dresser?

I'd have them get the glider. I'd really would've liked one with DS#1 and am hoping for one with this DS.

I would ask them their budget in teh nicest way possible. Just say "oh,that would be great! I just have no idea what you'd like to spend, if you give me an idea I can tell you lots of things I want!" this way its their choice.

I agree. Let them know the price and see what they want to do. I also dont like people buying huge gifts for me. My sister told me my grandparents are planning on buying me the glider. Some people want to do something special for you and if they offer and know the price, enjoy it! :)
