Raising a daughter..
Couple of my friends were over and last night and one couple stayed behind a little later.. I found out they are having a little I couldn't help but notice she was a bit "disappointed".. idk.. but anyway.. we talked and talked.. and she was like its hard to raise a daughter. She's has to be feminine, yet confident, polite, mind her manners, yet try be aggressive to move up in a man's world.. she'll be judged on how she looks, and what she wears, she'll have to find the right man, and juggle a career and family... among many things women go through.
It made me wonder.. I am what if I'm having a little girl. All of this applies to her too.. I went through it all.. and going through it as well. It's hard to raise a girl.. everything that's out there.. how do you protect them from it all.
Any girl mommas and momma's to be have any advice for this momma to be. I honestly don't mind or ... but that conversation and question has been sitting pretty heavy on me all day... how do you raise a daughter..

Re: Raising a daughter..
I think about this all the time. I am currently . And I have a 2.5 yr old ds. When I was preggo w/ him I was team And secretly prayed for a boy for these exact reasons. This time around I am pretty ok either way bc of course there is a part of me dying to have a girl w/ all the frills and lace but then there is a part of me that will be relieved of all that worry if I don't ....us ladies have a lot of measuring up to do .

Re: Raising a daughter..
I think the same can be said for raising a boy. He has to be manly, yet sensitive. And is most likely expected to be a provider one day. I don't want to raise my to think he is a king, who expects a woman to wait on him. And I don't want him living with me when he is 30 years old. I think have it hard right now. They are doing worse in school, college and the workforce compared to women.

Re: Raising a daughter..
We are having a girl and I have heard from so many of my friends and the women I work with the saying that "a son is your son until he takes a wife but your daughter is your daughter for all her life".
We talk about the challenges of raising a daughter a lot. My reasoning is to try to do as good a job as my parents did of raising me because I turned out pretty good

Re: Raising a daughter..
Being a girl, I think it is easier to know how to raise her to be all the things you mentioned. I think it would be harder to raise a boy to try and teach him how to respect the delicate balance of women. JMO.

Re: Raising a daughter..
I think either sex is tough in its own ways and it's hard to be a parent no matter what.
Boys actually scare me a little more because you have to raise them to be a good man. To treat all women with respect. To be a hardworker and successful. To be a provider. I know that a woman can be the head of a household and wear the pants so to speak but I'm old fashioned and if I had a son I would hope to raise him to WANT to be just like his father. Respectful, hardworking, successful, provider, etc.
I know too many men out there who are no good. Who are so freaking lazy. I can't stand that! There are so many men out there who are losers. I know so many wives that have husbands that are useless. I know more no good men than women.
So raising a little boy to become a real man scares me!

Re: Raising a daughter..
I was team green and I had my daughter 2 weeks ago...I knew a boy would be easier to raise b/c of those reasons and Im not going to lie I know how hard it is for women in this world. So yes I am worried but totally not disapointed! =)

Re: Raising a daughter..
I used to think I wanted only bc of what you mentioned. I now have DD#2 on the way and couldnt picture my life without girls. I am not a girly girl. That made me nervous bc I thought that was something I should be able to give my DD. Now I think...why does she have to be a girly girl? Maybe my purpose was to raise girls that go against the standard. I just want my girls to be kind. Everything else will fall into place. There are demands on individuals regardless of gender, and I will teach them to always do their best and be good. She rolls in the dirt, plays hocky, gardens, plays with bugs...DD is one of the coolest people I know- I only wish there were more chicks out there like her

Re: Raising a daughter..
I have one of each and they are being raised the exact same way - to think for themselves and to dream. Yes, Abby is all pink and princess-y, but she loves sports and she is a strong willed person, hardly passive or subservient. I think she could kick any guy's arse if she had to.
If you asked my DH how he would raise a girl, he say:
"With a chastity belt and a shotgun."
Even though Jeremy is only to be 10 months old, he has been easier to raise. But that could be his nature - he's MUCH more easy going than Abby ever was.

Re: Raising a daughter..
I think there are challenges unique to each sex. It is tough to raise kids period IMO. I am not more worried about raising one sex vs. the other but I think some of the things I worry about differ based on gender.

Re: Raising a daughter..
i was team and had the same fear about girls. i did secretly hope for a boy cause i assumed (and heard from friends) that are easier to raise than girls. im also kinda tom boyish and i totally fear not being able to be girly enough to raise a girl properly. well my turned out to be a so i guess i'll have to learn!!

Re: Raising a daughter..
I have 2 girls and I think we are raising them the same way. Oldest is almost 4 and kate is 15 months. Both are confident, funny and outgoing. I think its just their nature. I tell them they can be whatever they want to be. I wouldn't stress so much about it, they will surprise you.

Re: Raising a daughter..
I must admit when I found out I was having twins, I was hoping for , for the reasons stated and I just think if I have to do 2 at a time it would be less maintenance Also, I always felt I would just be a better "boy mommy", I have never been the girly type
I think raisining a child to be a kind, loving decent human being is rough, period. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US

Re: Raising a daughter..
There are struggles with either sex. I def do not think girls are harder. I think it depends more on the particular personality of the child... BOY OR GIRL; not the sex in general.
I wouldn't put too much weight on this, esp not now.
Honestly I just had a baby girl... and none of this has ever really crossed my mind. All I thought was "what fun, I get to dress her up in all sorts of cute outfits and accessories!!" I tend to find the more fun things about each situation.
I can understand the special struggles with each sex. I just don't think ONLY girls are hard. Honestly... my older brother was A LOT, A LOT A LOT harder to raise than I ever was. And now that i think about it, so was my younger brother. I was def the easiest one.. and the only girl.
You just teach them right from wrong and to always do the right thing....

Re: Raising a daughter..
I did a bit of soul searching myself.. and I was like a girl or boy.. its up to each parent to raise a good person and in the end hope for the best. I loved reading all the responses.. I'm scared to be a parent as well.. I wouldn't consider myself role model material but its all good.. I just happy that I'm going to be a mommy
