If you make chicken for your baby who's just starting solids..

What type of chicken do you use? Do you use chicken cutlet, breast with bone, thighs? HOw do you cook it? Boil, bake? Does it freeze well? My granddaughter is already eating fruits & veggies and now will be moving on to meats. How old was your baby when you started giving chicken? My daughter will be pureeing it.

I didn't start meat until they were close to a year and were able to chew a bit. Then I just gave them some shredded chicken or ground turkey.

I never fed pureed meats. So not sure if thats what you are doing. I waited until she was picking up food and then started by shredding it. I cooked it every way and I only eat the white meat so usually chicken breasts, cutlets and bone in. Either in the oven, grilled, sautéed, etc.

I always use chicken cutlets bc I personally don't eat dark meat. I think I started giving DS meats around 6-7 mths pureed, and then at 9-10 mths I would just shred the chicken and he would "gum it".

Yes they froze great.

Two recipes that DS loved were these

Sweet Apples & Chicken

½ tbsp olive oil
½ small onion, peeled and chopped
1 sweet potato, peeled and cut into chunks
1 6-oz. chicken breast, cut into chunks
2s cup low-sodium chicken broth
1 or 2 medium sized apples (try Macintosh), peeled, cord and diced

Heat the olive oil in a saucepan and sauté the onion till softened. Add the chicken and sauté until it turns opaque
Add the sweet potato, apple and stock.
Bring to the boil and simmer for about 15 minutes. Puree to the desired consistency.
Transfer to ice cube trays and freeze overnight. Remove from trays and store in freezer bags until ready to use.

Gobble Me Up Turkey

1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 lb. ground turkey
1 rib celery, diced into ¼ inch pieces
1 small onion, diced into ¼ inch pieces
1 small carrot, diced into ¼ inch pieces
1 can of cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
2 cups homemade chicken stock or vegetable stock

In large stock pot, heat olive oil on medium-high heat. Add ground turkey and sauté until browned. Remove turkey from pot, drain on a plate covered with a paper towel, and set aside.

Turn down heat to medium. In same pot, add diced celery, onion and carrot and cook for about 6-7 minutes, or until vegetables are almost tender. Return turkey to pot. Add beans, chicken broth and sage. Bring pot to boil. Once mixture is just boiling, turn down heat to medium low and simmer for about 10-15 minutes.

Once mixture is has cooled down, add to food processor. Puree until you reach desired consistency. Distribute mixture evenly amongst ice cube trays or cupcake tins, dependent upon desired portion size.

I would always add more stock to reach desired consistency.

At around 9 mths I added beef stew and Baby bolgonese to the rotation. Both recipes were my own (I just added more liquid to my recipes) but I used this website for inspiration.

I never pureed chicken either. I started giving it to my twins at about 8 months old and ripped up into tiny tiny pieces. At first I boiled the chicken (like chicken soup) but got lazy fast, now they just eat it the way we eat it. (grilled usually, sometimes roasted.)

I buy organic chicken cutlets from whole foods, then steam and puree it in my Beaba baby food maker. I mix it with broth, water or sweet potato. Ive been giving it to her since around 4 months or so. I didnt really like the way it froze though so what we have been doing is just making small batches and keeping it in the fridge.

Re: If you make chicken for your baby who's just starting solids..

I tried to puree the chicken first time I gave it to DD (around 7 months). SHE HATED IT!! I couldnt figure out if she just hated chicken or she hated the texture.

I decided to hold off for a while on meat, then at 8/9 months I tried very small pieces of roasted chicken, baked, (whatever I was eating) and she LOVES it. So it was the texture that was messing her up.

SO now she is 10 months and eats all meats in small pieces.
