Name question...advice please

Dh and I are torn between two names, although we like a few others as well. One of them is Giuliana. I LOVE the name but hate the nickname Giulie/Julie, due to a negative association with the name. Is there a way to avoid people calling her Giulie/Julie without having to say, "Her name is Giuliana!" I know an Isabella and if you call her Bella, her mother will correct you. Do you think just calling her Giuliana will be enough to deter people from calling her Giulie/Julie?

Re: Name question...advice please

I know 3 Julianna's and no one calls them Julie.
With 2 of them, everyone calls them Jules (which I think is really cute) The other one is just always called by her full name. I think if always call her her full name it will just catch on, except for those few annoying family members who call her what they want & you'll have to correct them.

Re: Name question...advice please

I know 2 Julianna's and neither of them are nicknamed Julie.
One is Jules, and the other goes by Anna.

I'm pretty sure if you tell everyone her name is Julianna, they will just call her that. And if not, it's fine for you to correct them! You are the mom & that's your decision for your daughter's name.

Re: Name question...advice please

I named my daughter after my sister, Cynthia. I.don't like Cindy. I have always called her Cynthia and everyone just followed. She's 12 now, no one in her school even calls her Cindy, always Cynthia. I think if you always call your child by there full name, everyone will follow and your child will introduce themselves by their full name.

Re: Name question...advice please

My DS is Anthony and immediately after he was born my MIL and others started calling him Tony. I firmly said his name is "Anthony", and nipped that in the bud.
Like pp have said, if you introduce your child as Giuliana, I don't think people will shorten her name. And if they do then politely correct them.

I think people will call her what you call her and it is okay to correct them if need be. I know two Giuliana's and call them both Giuliana (granted they are babies and this is what their moms call them lol)

I think you can control it up until a certain point. I correct everyone who calls my DS, Vincent anything other than Vincent. But he's 3-1/2 so I still have some control. Although I will say that some of the nicknames have grown on me and I have been known to say "Vin" or "Vincey" here and there and because it's my kid I am OK with how it sounds. I'm still not a fan of Vinny though. :)

My newphew is Christopher. When he went to kindergarden, he was always the last one to finish writing his name, so he decided to only write Chris ... so in school everyone, including the teachers calls him Chris. His mom is less than thrilled BUT he choose it and she had no control over it once he was in school.

My cousin's name is Elizabeth and my aunt only wanted her called Elizabeth. My family has always called her by her full first name. However when she got to school she became Liz to her friends. Since then some family has started calling her Liza. I think if you're firm about it your family will follow.

I love the name, but if a form of the name makes you uneasy, I wouldn't be able to name her that...you know? Even if only one person called her that, her whole life, if it made me uneasy, I wouldn't be able to do it!

See I hated the nickname Vinny. I taught DS that when anyone calls him Vinny to say "my name is Vincent and don't you forget it." Chat Icon ... It's the one nickname I really do not like for him and so far, no one has called him that more than once without him or me correcting them. I hope it continues, but I loved the name Vincent so much I was willing to take the chance.

Re: Name question...advice please

it's hard bc you can correct people, but if it is going to drive you nuts if people call her Julie anyway I might avoid the name.

I love the name Grace, but I hate hate hate Gracie and I know people will call her that...so I am just going to possibly use it as a middle name instead so I don't have to deal with the headache.

Re: Name question...advice please

We have the same issue with a lot of longer Italian names that we are choosing from.

I believe you can only control it up until a certain age. Once they are in junior high/high school it becomes up to them and also their friends.

We have a Giuliana in the family and the family keeps the name intact- however her friends ALL call her Julie. I'm not sure about teachers.

Re: Name question...advice please

When I had my son, his father's side wanted to call him TJ and I told them NO, his name is Taylor and you will respect that. They wanted to relive their dead brother through him, well not with my son. Everyone calls him Taylor. Sometimes you have to correct people. People would call me Chrissy I told them I didnt like it but, I like Chris. Just let everyone know what you want your daughter to be called, put your foot down.

I love Guliana, and I would assume "Jules" would be the nickname associated.

Eff Em, Lin! It's your kid! If someone calls my son something I don't like, It's going to be polietly corrected.

Re: Name question...advice please

My cousin's kid is Julianna, I never even thought to call her Julie. But I suppose its possible. Jules seems more likely.

And no, that doesn't work. I call my son Christopher. Day care calls him Chris. I've corrected them, didn't help. I gave up. Chat Icon

I guess I'm the minority b/c I'm surprised a lot of people think Jules would be the natural nickname for Julianna instead of Julie.

After all it IS Juli-anna.

Maybe I'm skewed by the Giulianna in our fam that is Julie.
