girl name question

We are having a really hard time picking a girls name this time around. We really like Ciara (pronounced keer-ah). its the Irish spelling and we dont want to spell it Keira or Kyra or anything like that. Do you think with the spelling Ciara we are doomed to correcting people on the pronounciation? I foresee us getting alot of Kee AH ra or Si ER ras?

If so, we also like Fiona, Aisling, and Cara? What do you think of those? DD1's name is Maeve.

Re: girl name question

we just talked about this yesterday! :) i say go with Ciara spelled the Irish way... people will get it eventually!

After Ciara, i like Fiona, Cara and Aisling (in that order)

Re: girl name question

haha! I thought you might weigh in! we would definitely go with the Ciara spelling, I am just so not into having to correct the pronounciation 1000x a day. Although I guess we both sometimes have that issue with M&M!

Re: girl name question

I'm willing to bet anyone that doesn't know her will pronounce it SEE-AR-AH; and she will always have to spell her name for people.

I have a very common name (Katherine) and always have to spell it which is mildly annoying.

When I first read your post I thought it was pronounced as SEE-AR-AH so I agree.

Re: girl name question

My nieces are Ciara and Fiona. There have only been a couple of times that Ciara has been called Key-ar-a or See-ar-a for that matter.

Saying that, Fiona is my favorite Irish girls name and Ciara is my second. Now that my sister has used both I have no idea what to call our Chat Icon

I like Cara and also love Aoife, Niamh and Saoirse but with a very difficult to spell Irish last name we have to go with something easier to spell.

Re: girl name question

I like Ciara a lot. If you and your DH like it, use it! Spell it however you want. Just keep in mind that people are going to mess it up no matter what you do! My DD's name is Lila (pronounced Lie-lah). I thought it'd be fairly easy to pronounce, but nope! We get Lee-lah, Lill-ah, Lily... oh well.

edited b/c it's hard to type with a baby on your lap!

Re: girl name question

On your list, my favorite is Cara. That was one of my top choices for girls.

Re: girl name question

I personally would think its See-er-ah - like the singer, and I'd be willing to bet a lot of others would too - especially with the singer's name being out there.

If you don't want to be correcting everyone, then I'd say you should go with something else.

I do think it is a pretty name though.

Re: girl name question

I would never have thought it should be pronounced KEERA. I would assume it's SEE AH RAH.

I have an uncommon name and I have HAAAATED having to spell out my name or pronounce it for people my.entire.life. Honestly, it's very very very annoying after a while. Not people's faults at all, but for me it's been annoying.

Hence why my son has a "common" or unmistakable name and so will future children.

Re: girl name question

I think you should spell it the way you want to spell it. My DS is Rhys (Reese) the Welsh spelling and while people often mispronounce his name I wouldn't want it spelled any other way.

ITA! if you really like this name, maybe you can use it as her middle name instead.
