Who usually buys the Nursery Furniture???

Last night my MIL called and told me that she wants to buy the Nursery furniture. This is her first and only grandchildren that she will ever have, because my DH is an only child.

Well, I told my mom and she started hysterical crying saying that is what she was going to buy. Now I feel bad, but I know she doesn't have a ton of money to lay out for furniture, so I told her to buy me our bassinets or something else, she was so insulted and now she is not talking to me, which I think is crazy.

My parents paid for the furniture but I didn't think it was an "they usually" buy type thing. (not saying you think so either!) They just wanted to buy it for their grandchild.

Can your Mom and MIL split it?

ETA- I could so see my Mother getting upset over this too.

My Mom bought DS's crib. She is the only grandparent. If MIL was alive, they would have split the cost.....

Both IL's and my parents split the price and paid.

My mom and grandmother bought our furniture.
But the in-laws wanted to originally so they just bought us all our nursery accessories, crib mattress, and bassinet.

My IL's bought the crib and my BIL and his gf bought the dresser/changing table. I don't think anyone felt like it was their place to specifically buy it. I think they just knew that, as the immediate family, they wanted to buy a big ticket item, and there wasn't much in the way of big ticket to choose from.

The grandparents purchased for DD and my mom is purchasing what I need this time (which isn't too much, I still have some of DD's stuff and my sis is giving me some stuff as well).

Good luck with your situation, silly that she should be mad at you. Hope it gets better soon.

Each of our parents bought a piece of our nursery furniture -- maybe that's what you can propose to your mom and mil?

My mother and mil are talking about spliting the cost. It's very nice of them.

I don't think there is a set person.

For us... we bought the majority of it. My MIL gave us some $ to put towards the crib and the rest fell on us.

I know it's frustrating, but its also so sweet that they both really want to buy it for you.

Can they split it?

Or perhaps one could do the furniture and the other does the bedding, strollers, and carseat? Somehow a compromise needs to be made.

My mom bought our crib and rails and she is paying for my shower. My in-laws bought our dresser, chest, nightstand, mattress and glider. At first MIL said she wanted to buy all of the furniture and my mom was upset so I told MIL that my mother wanted to buy the crib and she was fine with it. It works out to cost about the same. Both were happy.

My IL's asked if my parents had offered, and we told them no so they said they wanted to, when my parents found out they asked if they could go half, so both parents did.
I guess my in laws didn't realize it's like buying a regular bedroom set lol so we wound up paying a little towards it on their end, but are very grateful we got most of it paid for.

my parents gave us some money to put towards it as a gift because thats what they did when my brother and SIL were expecting. my IL's didnt offer anything at all. so we paid for the rest of it ourselves.

Most people I know have had their parents and ILs split the cost of the furniture.

My ILs offered to split the cost with my mom, but I'm actually using my old dressers (which was my baby furniture) so all I need is a crib, which my mom can cover herself. So my ILs will find something else and obviously there is alot more you need!

Since you need two sets of everything, and you're having boy and girl, why not let one buy one set and one buy another set?

We did, we thought it was tacky to register for it and no one offered by the time we were 20 weeks so we just bought it.

ETA: I noticed you are having boy/girl twins, what if they either split the cost of the furniture or if your MIl really wants to buy the furniture maybe your mom could buy the bedding....

My parents bought our crib. I'm not sure if anyone usually takes care of certain items. For most people I know the girl's parents bought the nursery furniture.

I think the child's parents usually buy the furniture. It is a generous gift in the grandparents offer to purchase it. I'm sure some type of agreement can be made where both grandparents can buy some of the furniture you need.

Honestly, it sounds a little silly. What about saying... well, MIL is getting the furniture, but we really need a glider, some decorations, etc for the nursery.
Would she be ok with that?
My parent's just offer. They are close with my IL's. My parents are getting DS's big boy furniture now. If my IL's ask who paid I'd tell them, but since they didn't I'll leave it at that. Also, my IL's don't have as much as my parents right now. My mom wound up buying DS's 1st shoes just b/c we were out shopping. My MIL asked to get his next pair. Nothing immature or anything. I told her that's fine. Although his feet haven't grown yet
