Tradition has it that my grandma (on my dad's side) buys the crib, but she hasn't said anything yet. So my parents and ILs have split the cost and I told them that if we get a check for the crib, I'll split it and give the $ back to them.

MY Parents & DH parents are splitting the furniture. Dresser Mirror lingerie chest crib. Its pretty costly & this is my parents 3 grandchild but my DH's 1st & my DH is an only child as well. I thought it was great that they could get together & do this fo rus. What an awesome gift.

Maybe your mom & his can get together & split it??

My MIL is like this, VERY showy. At first it made me VERY uncomfortable but after awhile, I felt, go ahead KNOCK youself out. She is buying us all our furniture for both boys and a few big ticket items as well. BUT she insisted already (im 19 weeks preggo) that her card and gifts be opened first and told me to specifically bring a picture of the furniture so it can be passed around and everyone knows Baba bought it for us whateves, people are not going to change at that age.

I don't think its anyone's specific role to buy anything. My advice, let them try to top eachother LOL........I know its frustrating.

My mom bought the crib, MIL bought the glider, my grandma bought the changing tablet and my Step-MIL bought the crib bedding...nobody got us a dresser, but we have one that matches the color of the furniture we plan to use...

My parents will buy it, as they did for my sister, but we'll only need a crib and changing table. My DH's parents are deceased.

We paid for most of it. My parents paid for one of the pieces that was expensive $1300 and my ILs gave us $500 toward it.

I dont' think there is any rule as to who should buy it but what if you spoke to your MIL and said that you mom also wanted ot buy it and maybe they coudl split it.

I had the same dilemna...

My mom told me first she wanted to buy it. My DH said it's not a "who called it first thing" - and maybe his mom would want to buy it. She did.

So, compromise...

BOTH Grandparents are buying the furniture! They apparently already bought everything and are going exactly half on the crib, bedding, conversion kit, toddler rail and dresser/changer. And I'm VERY happy about that because it would have been A LOT for just one of them to pay alone. As it is, it came out to about $1500 EACH. Especially since my mom is also paying for the shower alone. AND I know she went nuts buying other stuff.

I wouldn't shut your mom out of being able to buy this for you... make it a "GRANDMAS" gift instead of just picking one.

BTW... I thought the same thing you did about someone being able to buy the bassinet - thinking that would be meaningful, but it turns is used so little that it's really not as special of a gift.

Also, I was going to include the rocker as part of the furniture, but seeing as everything else came to so much, DH and I decided to buy that on our own.
