Yes but in 1996 it was not a lot and we were lucky enough to have the exact down payment for the price of the house we purchased.

We didn't get preapproved. We figured out what we'd be most comfortable paying and shopped in that price range.

We had a pre commitment for almost double of what we spent.

no way! we spent just about half what we were approved for.

there is NO possible way we could have afforded what they said when you included taxes. we would have foreclosed by now.

I don't remember what we were pre-approved for.

But DH was a bank manager and he always advised people that you should NEVER spend what you are preapproved for, because they aren't taking into account your normal household expenses like electric and gas.

We did. We were pre-approved on my husbands income alone. I had been out of work having had a baby so my income wasn't taken into account.
