Maternity Leave - what does disability pay?

I work for a very small company. I have my 4 weeks vacation time that I'm saving and will use when the baby comes at my normal pay. After those 4 weeks, I guess I'm going to have to go on short term disability with NYS. Is this how it's normally done? And I'm tyring to look up online how much NYS short term disability pays and I keep seeing things like up to $170 a week. Is this right? Who the heck can live on that? Anyone have any experience with this or can point me to where I can get accurate info? TIA!

Yup, $170 a week. That's what I got last year. Disgusting, right?

There are two different forms of disabilty, do you pay into STD through your job, this is also from the state but you have to have enrolled in it and paid into it. Without it, you are eligible for the standard $170/week. But note, you only get like 2 checks, so itll be like 6 weeks without anything.

I have STD in addition that I enrolled in and paid into, with that I get 50% of my pay while Im out, plus the $170.

OMG! This is just disgusting to me! We live in one of the most expensive states. Everything is high here - to live, to work, etc and then this ridiculous state has the balls to pay a woman who just gave birth a measly $170/week before taxes. Ugh! I would LOVE to know where the eff my tax dollars are going becuase this is just horrible! I can't even tell you how livid I am right now! We need an Emote-Icon that has steam coming out of his head because <---- just isn't doing how I feel right now justice!!!

You should also check with your benefits coordinator because my company actually pays me at 100% of my salary up to 13 weeks of disability. This is based on how long I have worked for the company. However, I would only get the standard 6 or 8 weeks depending on how I end up delievering. Unless there is a medical need for more Anything after that would be vacation time under FML.

that's before taxes... it comes to about 150 a week after taxes.

do you get any paid maternity leave at all from your company?

I just read something about getting disability insurance to pay your full pay or partial pay to you when out for childbirth. NY is one of the states that participates. It's worth looking into.

if you have specific disability through your employer you need to look into whats covered.
for me i get 3 weeks at full pay and 3 weeks with no pay from my employer outside of disability. i will take the 3 weeks at full pay and the other 3 weeks will fall under my disability plan which pays 60% of my salary for 3 more weeks if i have vaginal birth or 5 more weeks if i have a C-section (its really covers 6 weeks or 8 weeks but since i get the first 3 weeks fully covered i wont apply for disability until im 3w post partum).

I just actually met with our disability coordinator yesterday for open enrollment at my job. I didn't bother with short term for now because I have a lot of benefit time saved up (my job is hourly). And it wouldn't help me now because I am already pregnant --- a pre-existing medical condition at this point! So if I went out with anything PG related it wouldn't pay. I will, however, sign up for it before I get PG with our next LO, because then it can help.
