Is there a way to NOT get a quad roomChat Icon
Wishful thinking, I know. I am having serious doubts about wanting to continue with my practice and moving to a stonybrook practice bc of st catherines. I had a double with dd#1 that I was alone in bc it was Thanksgiving and everyone went home for the holidays...it was so empty. Do they give doubles for Csections? Or is it just wherever you end up?

Re: St Catherines

I was just talking to my friend who is a nurse in the nursery there. She said that they always spread out the patients to avoid filling rooms if possible. I guess that means you can only hope it is slow when you are there and your room does not fill up.

Also, a very good friend had all three of her girls there and with the last one had a horrible roommate. The nurses were very understanding and moved her without a problem. She ended up in a quad room without any roommates. I guess it is just luck of the draw.

Good luck! Chat Icon

Thanks!

Are they at all more inclined to put a csection in a double since they are there longer and a quad room can empty out faster? I know, I am pulling at strings now...Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had 2 c-sections at St. Catherine's and had roommates both times. I would not deliver another child there.

Re: St Catherines

I HATED it there! It was SOOOOOOOOO crowded in my room when I delivered DS. As far as I know, they will not fill up a quad if there are other rooms still open. It was PACKED when I was there though. For that reason alone, this time around I switched OB practices so I could deliver out of SB.

Re: St Catherines

I Hated st.catherines, I Hate that u have to walk down the hall to take a shower, the visiting hours stun and sharing a room ahhh never again. I wish there was but nope. i had my room to myself for the 1st day but then they brought in another women on my 2nd night. It was very annoying and i will be changing my obgyn be4 i get prego again just so i dont have to go back there.
I wasnt a fan of the nurses either they always seemed to "forget" about me and i would have to call 3 times to get my pain killers. Also my dd was bf and they wouldnt bring her to me at night. I would wake up & relize what time it is & have to call down and say um im pretty sure my kids hungry... Chat Icon
All in all they took good care of my dd and i made it out in one piece lol but i wont go back there & the food was stinky! lol

Re: St Catherines

Hrs are sucky! But I'm no way near a picky person, nothing bothered me. Shower is down hall, but I was so happy to shower, I would have done it 3 floors up. I had a roommate, she didn't bother me either. I ate food my hubs brought, besides breakfast, which I had a bagel.

But ill say it again, nothing bothers me, I'm really easy going.

Re: St Catherines

I was thinking of switching practices to when I get PG with #2. I hated sharing a room and especially sharing a Bathroom. The blood grosses me out. I actually used to take gloves in the BR and wipe the toilet down with wipes before I would use it. The nurses where not so great, and they had no lactation Consultant since she was on maternity leave and I needed help.
The worst was they put me in a room after giving birth at 12am with a women who just had a C-section. All I heard was her loud Blood Pressure machine (think that is what it was) all night and nurses where in and out since she was having issues. I didn't get much sleep at all.
Labor and delivery nurses where great, no issues with that.
I'm pretty layed back, but I wasn't very happy.

Re: St Catherines

I switched OBs after going to st catherines for early contractions and having 2 lousy experiences. I don't know if they're just short on nurses, or if they really just get paid to be inattentive.

and after having btdt, there is absolutely NO WAY I could share a post-partum bathroom with someone - Omg I would throw up.

double and triple check that. I was told by several people at contemporary women's care that I could deliver @ stony brook - UNTIL my water broke and they insisted I go to St Catherine's or else they wouldn't care for me. They made me sign myself out of the Dr's office AMA so I could go to SB.

Re: St Catherines

I just had my 2nd c.s there on Tuesday.

I didnt think there are any quads.... I didnt see any quads there either time.

I was in a triple with only 1 other roomate this time. Last time I was in a triple by myself (had a roommate for 1 night).

This time I delivered on like the busiest day there! 10 babies were born...which is alot for a hospital that only holds like 25....

I think they try to place you in like situations... both times I was in a room with woman who also had c/s. This time it was also her 2nd so it was a really positive situation for both of us.

I think I saw 1 or 2 singles too, you probably have to pay for them but might be worth looking into.

IMO, I would rather have a team of Drs that I totally trust and wind up for 3 nights in a room with 2 or 3 other woman, than switch and have anxiety over who was performing my surgery.

ETA: I was happy both times i was there. Some nurses are better than others, but overall I have no complains....and FYI there are some rooms with private showers....#105 is one as thats where I was this time! It was nice to have that I will admit. This time I delivered at 8pm on Tuesday and left Friday....first time I delivered at 9am on Thu and was gone on Sunday.

GL!

Re: St Catherines

Sorry to crash...

I recently switched OB from St. Catherine's to Stony Brook. My practice also said they had rights to Stony Brook but when I last visited my OB at St. Catherine's and pressed her about the issue, she got really nasty.

She told me that they prefer to deliver at St. Catherine's since their office is so close, should they need to get something. What?!?! Then she proceeded to tell me that she felt Stony Brook was no place for a baby!!

I immediately switched after that visit and couldn't be happier with my new OBGYN!!

Re: St Catherines

I'm delivering at St. Catherine's, and I already had a "preview visit" a few months ago, and was very impressed with the quality of care I got. I had a roommate, but who cares? As far as I'm concerned, you're not in a luxury hotel, you're there to deliver your baby safely, put up with whatever "discomfort" for the 2-3 days out of your life.

Re: St Catherines

I have delivered both DS's at St catherings and cant wait to deliver DD there too. With DS#1 I did 17 hr of back labor and my nurse Roz was my savior.. walking the hallways with DH and I, getting me in the shower and getting me more relaxed, and finally being the one hugging me through my epidural and holding my hand while DS was born. That time I was in the triple toom with only one roomate. With DS #2 I was a scheduled section and again my nurses were amazing. The 2nd time I was in a shared room and my only issue was my roomates snoring, which they DID offer to switch me when I joked with the nurses.. but I opted to just stay since she was leaving. The lactation nurse Jen was amazing both times and the nurses for me as well as the nursery were always more than accomadating.. giving me extra of anything I needed.. even 3 packs of diapers :) The only thing that did stink was the hallway shower... but it was right outside my room.

Contemporary Womens Care will only deliver at Stonybrook if you have a problem. All other deliveries go to St. Catherines. I thought I had the choice as well and didn't. St. Catherines needs to redo their maternity ward!! When my Aunt who came to visit me said "Oh it looks exactly the same as when I had your cousin"....36 yrs ago! There's need for an update. The only advice I have is bring Lysol for you and your roommate to spray down after you go to the bathroom and hit the communal shower down the hall first thing in the morning(630am) after they scrub it down with bleach. Both time I shared with C-sections (and I was vag).
