where are some nice areas to rent a house near the beach...either for a week or just a weekend?
we are fairly flexible with location and cost.
we would do LI or course, but also CT, MD, MA and MD/VA. probably wouldn't want to drive further than that though.

We love Ocean City, NJ. Have been going there since I was about 4! It is very family friendly. Really clean beaches, nice boardwalk, playgrounds, cute town.

I'm a fan of Long Beach Island, NJ. We also went to Rehoboth, DE one year for a wedding and enjoyed it a lot.
I wasn't impressed by Ocean City, MD - I was expecting more.

We are renting a 4-br house for the week of July 4th---we got a nice house for a bit over $1k a couple.

if you do anything on Fire Island (Kismet, Seaview, Ocean Beach), Shelter Island or out in Montuak let me know and I'm crashing (I would pay for my share obviously).
We got a sick last minute deal last year for memorial day weekend. Fire Island $1000 Thursday through Monday for a 4 bedroom house that accommodated 7.

I love Fire Island. I stayed there with friends a few years ago and it was wonderful. We stayed in Kismet.
I did go to VA beach when I was kid with my family. We rented a nice house which was walking distance to the beach. I can't give you any other info other than I remember it being really fun
Also have heard nothing but good things about Long Beach Island.
