If baby ends up in NICU...
at another hospital and has to be moved, will they move me too?
I'm a little concerned, because while I love my OB practice, the hospital I'd deliver at does not have a NICU at all, and would send the baby 45 mins away to MA (I live in CT).
There's a hospital about 40 minutes away that has a really top-notch NICU, but it would mean changing practices.
Any thoughts/experiences?

Re: If baby ends up in NICU...
That's a good questions. A good friend of mine had a similar incident: She delivered her twins and one of them had an issue that the baby needed to be brought to Schneiders right away (thankfully baby is now healthy as can be). But unfortunately, she was in the hospital where she gave birth and the baby was in Schneiders. Her DH was going back and forth between the 2 hospitals until mom and the other twin were d/c.

ITA..
And to add IMO hospitals can transfer the mother to a hospital with a NICU for the delivery if there is a reason.. like less than 36 weeks, previa and all.. at that point you will not get your doc, but you'll be in a hospital with a NICU

Re: If baby ends up in NICU...
I was told no. my docs will not let me deliver the twins in a hospital with no NICU just in case they need it and i refuse to be at one hospital while my babies are at another

Re: If baby ends up in NICU...
In my experience as a paramedic in MI if the baby goes to the NICU the mother stays at the original hospital until discharge. If you have a reason to think the baby will end up in the NICU I would go to that hospital and switch practices. We drive 20min away since our NICU is that far and we knew she would more the likely need it. It was worth it for me and when she did go to the NICU my OB kept me an extra 2 nights so I could be with her.

Re: If baby ends up in NICU...
My OB is affiliated with a NICU hospital, but usually delivers at a non-NICU. He said if they know before they deliver at Winthrop.
A friend of mine experienced there. She went into labor 9 weeks early. They told her to go to Winthrop b/c otherwise she would not be able to travel with the baby.
It's hard to switch practices - do you have a recommendation?

Re: If baby ends up in NICU...
I was wondering the same thing, I am delivering in Connecticut too. For me, Greenwich Hospital sends babies to Yale New Haven which is far from where I live. Was thinking I could request the baby be brought to a different hospital?

Re: If baby ends up in NICU...
No, I was originally going to deliver in Southampton and if baby had to go to NICU, they would have been transferred to Stonybrook, but I would have remained at Southampton. Now, due to an insurance issue, I'm just going to deliver at Stonybrook. My old doctor only delivered at Southampton, so I couldn't switch hospitals, and my new doctor only delivers at Stonybrook.
