talk to me about maternity leave...

i work for a brand new small company and we have no policy. so im working with my bosses to develop this policy. my boss' first pitch was 3 weeks paid, 3 weeks unpaid. i said i was expecting a minimum of 8 weeks, and that i will check in to disability as well. i am NOT covered by FMLA since the company has less than 50 employees. we didn't come to any formal agreement yet, so im really hoping i can work something out with disability so that at least ill have some of my paycheck and longer than 6 weeks....Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

please share what your maternity policy is. teachers need not respond.. i dont feel like being jealous that i didnt become a teacher today Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: talk to me about maternity leave...

I work for a small company and our official policy I believe is 6 weeks paid and 6 weeks at half pay. I know that people who have been here longer and its their first child have negotiated different lengths of time and pay.

Re: talk to me about maternity leave...

NYS disability is 6 weeks for vaginal birth and 8 weeks for c-section and how it works for my company is that HR submits the paperwork and disability reimburses my employer what I would get if they didn't give me anything. I work for a bigger company and I get 4 weeks paid, then I can use any vacation time I have.

With my first DD I got 4 weeks paid, 2 weeks vacation and then because I had a c-section i got 2 weeks disability. My job allowed me to stay out for 4.5 months which is not standard. I did work from home after my 8 weeks of pay was up.

Re: talk to me about maternity leave...

I work for a school district, but I am not a teacher, I am clerical at the Administration Office.

I get 6 weeks for vaginal birth or 8 weeks for c-section. In order to get paid for this time I have to use my sick or vacation time that I saved for that, otherwise I get the time off but it would be unpaid. After those 6 or 8 weeks, I will then get 12 weeks FMLA but that is unpaid, however my medical is covered.

Re: talk to me about maternity leave...

6 weeks paid, 6 weeks unpaid, so basically 12 weeks at 1/2 pay.

Re: talk to me about maternity leave...

i believe its 6 weeks paid, 8 weeks paid if you have a c-section....

lost of places allow you to take a longer leave unpaid...

im pretty sure if dr says you need to stop working before your due date, you have to take short term disability...and then once you have the baby starts the 6 weeks, or 8 weeks...

Re: talk to me about maternity leave...

i've vented about this before, but when I asked the same question I was surprised about responses. most seem to be 8 weeks with the ability to take unpaid time.

Mine is 8 weeks at 60% pay (this is what bugs me) and I can tack on vacation and sick onto that. with that, I'll end up with about 4-5 weeks paid and the 8 weeks at 60% pay. if I have to I'll take about a week or two unpaid.

what I WANTED and had at other firms was 12 weeks fully paid.

I have to say I was pretty shocked about this as well, but I spoke to my union rep and payroll dept about this and they both said the same thing. I will sit down and talk with them again though when we get back from vacation because I really want to get this figured out as soon as possible. I was approved from my supervisor and superintendent for the time off already though. And I will also be taking 2 weeks before my due date and using vacation days for that, so I will be off for a total of 20-22 weeks. Now that I write it out it doesn't sound right, but they approved it so maybe I should keep my mouth shut.

Def keep your mouth shut Chat Icon That is really amazing!

I am hoping to use vacation for the 2 weeks prior to my due date too, so I can save the FMLA for when the baby is here.

I get 6 weeks paid 100% through short-term disability, then my vacation days (if I have any left!) are paid out, then it's unpaid until my FMLA is up.

Re: talk to me about maternity leave...

We get 12 weeks paid - which is so not normal but I am not complaining!

I work for a large financial institution though. If I were you I would try to get as much paid as possible and then file the remainder under disability...if you are allowed?

Re: talk to me about maternity leave...

My job is 6 or 8 weeks paid and 12 weeks total off
So either I get 6 unpaid or 4 unpaid weeks
I also have to use 5 vacation days the first week i go out - how that makes sense i have no clue
And I am not allowed to tack any vacation days on the end of the 12 weeks

Re: talk to me about maternity leave...

I'm a little confused why you'd be jealous of teachers? We get 6 weeks for vaginal / 8 weeks for c-section paid IF you have enough sick days to cover it. Seems like the 6/8 is pretty common based on the other posts however, I have to use my sick days.

I can then use FMLA (which is half paid again if you have enough sick days) if I am entitled to it - which I am not because you need to complete 7 years in my district.

Yeah, definitely no reason to be jealous. And in NYC you do not get paid for the FMLA.

Re: talk to me about maternity leave...

Yea, def dont be jealous of teachers.

Is the same as most of the policies listed, except you have to use your saved up sick time.

This time around I only have enough days to cover 6 weeks and I had a C last time, so I will have to take unpaid time if I have another C.

We can take more time for FMLA or as per our contract, but it is unpaid.
