If family members store items in your house..
(like season decor, sports equipment, etc),
how does it work out?
Any good or bad experiences with it?
I've heard different views on it from two different people (one says it is fine, and the other said they regret doing it), so I am looking for more opinions.

I store my mom's seasonal decorations.
No issues.
I take care of all that jazz though - storing, taking it to her house, decorating, taking the decs down and back to my house, etc...
I wouldn't allow my family members to store stuff in my shed or garage (and giving them access to it) - next you thing you know they'll be borrowing things, not telling me, not returning the items, etc.

Re: If family members store items in your house..
i store clothes, personal items, etc for my great aunt. We moved her out of her home of the last 50 years into an asstd living facility almost 2 years ago and now into a nursing home (which has even LESS room than the ALF) just last week. I couldnt imagine not doing it for her. But, honestly for anyone else, i probably wouldnt do it. we have enough of our own crap, and most people could probably do a big purge and make enough room in their own home (though, of course there's always those extenuating circumstances...)

Re: If family members store items in your house..
My parents store SO much stuff for me right now, I couldn't imagine not returning the favor if they needed.
They have my holiday decorations, some off-season clothes, furniture, kitchen stuff I can't fit right now, etc. I keep most of it in plastic bins in a corner of their basement, and just pick-up/drop-off whenever I need. I'm there a few times a month anyway to visit, so as far as I know it doesn't bother them!

We store stuff at my parents' house.
I don't think I'd want anyone storing anything at my house. Then again, we live in a small 2 bedroom apt. We don't have enough space for our own stuff!

Re: If family members store items in your house..
I have no problem with it as long as I have the room in my basement for it.
I will not store it in my living areas.
Actually, right now I have about 20 of my sisters boxes in my basement. She had to move out of her apt and in with my parents. She got a storage unit, but whatever didn't fit I offered for her to keep at my house. I would never make her spend more money on a bigger storage unit when I have the space that I'm not even using.
I also store all the baby items that my mom used at her house when DD was little. She doesn't have the room and we do, and she watches DD one day a week - it only seems fair.

both my IL's and my mother store so much stuff for us right now (our apt is really small) and it works out fine for us. everything is in the same condition we left them in. we haven't had any problems.

My mom stores crap at my uncle's house and he complains about it constantly.
I think because my mom has the tendency of forgetting about her stuff. So whatever he has at his house, she probably doesn't even know it's there. He could probably throw it out and she wouldn't know.

Re: If family members store items in your house..
DH stored a bunch of stuff in his parents house after we got married. It did not go well. We ended up just throwing most of it away because of all the drama it caused. Essentially, they didn't want it in their house, but wouldn't throw it away or allow us to throw it away because they are hoarders. DH went over there when no one was home, bagged it up, and tossed it in a dumpster. It wasn't worth it... it was chachki stuff, nothing that meant much to him. Fishing equipment, clothes, etc.
ETA: We stored furniture for my BIL and SIL when they were on delployment. That was not a problem whatsoever.
