Re: Has anyone been following what has been happening in Egypt?
Bbca morning news has great coverage. There are some really brave people in this world. Praying for them all. And the rest of the world. this is world changing. Though obviously not as important as whether or not you start snacktime before checkout. ;p

Why did I forget about BBC?? I usually go to them for big stories like this, to try and get away from some of the excess hype that has nothing to do with the actual story.

Re: Has anyone been following what has been happening in Egypt?
i have been following it, i have a very good friend that is Egyptian but unfortunately have not been able to speak to her recently.
i am glad for the people taking a stand but as others have said i despise the looters, its such a shame that always in these desperate times there are people that resort to looting
i was so happy to hear about the human chain of people blocking one of the museums i said to dh there is so much history in Egypt it would be terrible and a great loss if anything were to happen to all those amazing artifacts
i pray for the people there and that the best outcome possible comes from all this

Re: Has anyone been following what has been happening in Egypt?
I am trying to follow everything that has been going on but I feel like I still do not have a clear picture. From what I read on line and have heard in the news, the people are protesting 1. the current government (and lack of elections in the past three decades), 2. lack of food, 3. lack of jobs, 4. economy. Is that it?
I feel so badly that the Egyptian artifacts were defiled. Tourism is part of the life blood for Egypt and to ruin those artifacts destroys so much for all of humanity. It makes me so sad that people are so greedy.
If Mubarek is taken out of office, who or what type of government are the Egyptian people looking to put into power? Are the opposition groups pro-US? Are they pro-Israel? Would they honor the past treaties? I am so concerned as Egypt is such a critical country for US relations. Many prayers for the safety of everyone.

I also heard that they're protesting corruption, though that might be included in "the current government."

It speaks volumes that so few have posted on this enormous event happening in Egypt but there are 11(?) pages about stuffing your face while you're shopping.
Agree - it's a symptom of our culture at large. I've been watching the nightly news daily for updates, and unfortunately, what I'm finding is that American "coverage" consists of fewer than 5 minutes of repeated images and vague statements about what the cause of the protests really is, and then it's back to the weather and which celebrity did what today.
The situation over there worries me.

I just got a NYTimes email alert that there are protests in Jordan and the gov't there was dismissed as well.

This hits home on many different aspects. I just it all ends well.. and the human barricade made me so, so, so proud of them. Honestly, at the end of the day, they are protesting this as citizens of Egypts.. not as Muslims and Christians, which gives me great hope.

Re: Has anyone been following what has been happening in Egypt?
the important key is who would take over the next power. the people with out no internet, no cell service (limited) are taking matters in their own hands. i know Jerusalem is not happy with this upheaval since the current gov't has been a very good with them (one of the few in that region.)

this is the best part.
Christiane Amanpour reported yesterday that the Egyptian people WANT democracy. they want free elections. they want political power and freedoms that we simultaneously hold so dear/take for granted.
it is siad that they want to respect and uphold ALL treaties, especially and including those they signed with Israel (the only country to make peace with them in the middle east!!) and the US.
our govt is in a hard place right now. b/c Mubarek's govt has been an alli. but are we not the beacon of democracy in the world???
there was an interesting interview with Tony Blair on the matter yesterday.
he had some good points, but what stood out to me, what sort of made me sad, is that b/c this is such a HUGE moment in the world and leaders must really balance their positions, the Egyptian people's hopes and dreams are sort of caught in the middle of pure politics.
like I said, I understand, but it does suck for them.

Re: Has anyone been following what has been happening in Egypt?
Sadly even if Mubarak leaves office, their situation is not going to change overnight.
What is more troublesome to me is that the United States gives Egypt millions each year in aid... yet their economy is terrible, people are starving and jobless and Mubarak is reportedly worth $70B dollars. Something is seriously wrong here. I am going to guess and say it was us that helped pad Mubarak's bank account

Re: Has anyone been following what has been happening in Egypt?
I have and haven't been following. My brother, his wife and my 11 month old neice is there. They are outside of Alexandria and he saids he is safe, but I do worry as they tend to be fanatics about their religion and all and are determine to stay. Hoping this gets resolved soon.
