Just watched The Business of being born...

... and while the movies did not make me want to have a natural or home birth (it actually reinforced the fact that I want drugs lol) it did make me more worried about induced labors.

Ive heard from many people that many times when you recieve pitocin you end up getting a c-section - have you ladies heard this?

Also, the movie made me more worried about being on procardia - I hate that im on meds right now. I want to ask the doc about not taking it anymore.

Re: Just watched The Business of being born...

I was not induced but have heard that "statistic" about inductions leading to c/s.

My OB with DS, had told me inductions are more successful at NOT leading to c/s when you have made some progress on your own prior to being induced. Even if its 1/2 a cm its some natural progress! But there are alot of variables.

I had a scheduled c/s with DS due to his size and my lack of progress (I was still tightly closed on the day of my c/s) one of the reasons my OB and I chose a c/s over induction was due to the fact that my body was not showing signs of "preparing" for labor as many woman do!

I was not induced, went into labor on my own but was given pitocin and did have a vaginal birth. Also 2 of my best friends were given pitocin and led to vaginal births also...so i personally don't believe that pitocin leads to a c/s, just my opinion though!

Re: Just watched The Business of being born...

I think if you did a poll you would probably be able to validate that a lot of inductions lead to csections. Not sure of the percentage but the risk is there.

I went into labor on my own and given pitocin and delivered vaginally. I never really understood why they gave me pitocin but after watching this I think it probably was that they wanted to get me in and out. Thankfully all worked out well and my baby was healthy but I think with DS2 I'm going to ask them not to give me pitocin to see how it goes. I'm still getting the epi though.

DH and I watched it and our mouths dropped open. It was EXACTLY what I experienced.

-Went to hospital

-Pushed into getting epidural too soon, before labor even was anything.

-Labor slowed down

-Given Pitocin

-Pitocin fails and, as a result, baby heart rate starts dropping

-Given another hour to dilate past 4 cm.....

-C-section.

They say it was b/c baby was big......I call BS.

It was also a Thursday evening.......makes me wonder.

Re: Just watched The Business of being born...

I would guess something like 50 percent of inductions lead to c-sections (totally my guess, nothing scientific).

I had a failed induction which led to a c-section with DS. I was 42 weeks and this kid was never coming out. I only made it to 3 cm and I had a fever, so they went in. My son was only 6 lbs, 3 oz, so it doesn't have to be a big baby for the induction to fail.

Re: Just watched The Business of being born...

Everyone I know that was induced had no problem delivering naturally..

Only 1 of my friends ended up having to have a C-section...........because while she was pushing at 10cm, the baby couldn't get through her cervix...he ended up being 8lb 14oz and she's a petite girl! Chat Icon

My friend was induced yesterday morning and just had a healthy baby girl at 3:30am vaginally with no complications.

I was induced-cervidil and pitocin. No c section necessary. Don't believe the hype.
