Toy Guns

Just curious, when your DC are old enough to want them (or if they are) would you buy him/her a toy gun?

I'm mixed about them--not sure what we'll do when/if that time comes. DS has no idea what they are at this point. DH thinks it's fine when old enough, but it's not something I'm keen on having him play around with when he's older.

For what it's worth, we aren't gun owners, no one in our families hunt, etc. We were talking about it the other night though, and I wanted to know what others do.

I have no problem with toy guns that don't look realistic. However, I doubt anyone would ever buy DD one and I wouldnt, LOL, but maybe if we have a DS one day!

DS is 5 and I have not bought him one and also request that others do not as well...

Most of his classmates have them, but if I can keep them out of "my" house and it limits his exposure to violent play than thats what I'll do for as long as I am able to..I personally don;t like the type of play it promotes and he's not missing anything for not having any of his own...JMO

Re: Toy Guns

I don't plan on buying toy guns for my DC. But after speaking with my neighbor who has an 11 year old DS, she said I can expect everyday, innocent items to become guns: stick, remote control, toilet paper roll, etc.

I have a feeling that if DC want to play with a gun, they will turn something into one.

Re: Toy Guns

Thanks for the replies. Just curious. DH and I talked about it because of a conversation I had with our neighbor. They have decided to get their son a toy gun, eventhough they had originally decided to never give him such a thing. He's 8 now I believe, and kept begging for one-most of his friends have them, etc. My neighbors are opposed to gun ownership actually, and this isn't something they decided easily. So I started thinking, "hmmm, what will we do when/if that request comes?"

Ita agree with this, because my sister and I would shoot eachother with empty toilet paper rolls, we both grew up, and even to this day both still play violent video games. She's taking shooting classes to shoot real guns for sport. I'm obsessed with the forensics of gun shot wounds. Our parents are engineers and scientists, we never heard about hunting till we got older. I think we just liked gi joe, and cops shows.

I have no idea what ill do, but I have a feeling DH is antigun toys, I just think there is so much more involved than just the toy.

eta: We didn't grow up to be crazy, gun toting, shooter happy adults ... maybe just happy adults with very balanced lives Chat Icon

DS is already doing this, and I am not sure where he even gets it from. It is driving me insane.

Re: Toy Guns

DS was making guns out of legos and mega blocks long before we realized he was being exposed to guns.

Now that we know he knows about them, I want to make sure he understands them, too. At a Cub Scout event, he shot an air rifle, and had a safety course about them. I don't want to keep in completely away from guns, because *I* think that is more dangerous. Odds are, he will come across a real gun, and I want him to understand what they are, what they can do, and what to do when he sees one.

This is where I stand too. They are totally inappropriate for a kids' toy, IMO.

I started a post about this a while ago...i'll link it so you can read more responses.

Toy guns

I don't plan on ever buying my boys any toy guns and I won't be keeping any as gifts either. If he plays with one at a playdate I might try and get him to play with something else instead but I won't say he's not allowed.

ITA. DS is 4 and has just made his first gun out of legos. Now, it's up to me to make sure he learns about gun safety like my sister and I did.

Re: Toy Guns

My sons best school friend has a shiiit load of them (they are 4 1/2) DS had no idea what to do with them at a playdate and I was happy with that. I actually bought him a nerf gun for Christmas and never gave it to him. It was a great sale so I bought it then decided against it. Its hidden away somewhere. He has no interest so why should I give it to him. He HAS had a water gun or 2. But its true they will make one out of something else if they really want one.....I'm not firmly against it, but I'd rather he not have any.

I guess I'm the bad mom.Chat Icon

My 2 boys have an entire arsenal of guns and we are totally fine with it. DH is a cop so of course they want to emulate Daddy. We teach all the appropriate safety rules and constantly reiterate that guns, in general, are DANGEROUS and not to be touched ever. They totally get it.

We are the only "gun allowing" parents on the block so our house and yard are always packed with kids.Chat Icon

That's us too. And add a boat load of swords to the mix too. He also has tons of army guys and knights. It's just what he's into. I honestly don't think it's that big of a deal, though I understand why other people feel differently.

don't have a problem with it and would by one if I had a DS (when they are older, maybe 6, 7? not sure).
As long as it's not one of those toy guns that looks real.

Re: Toy Guns

ABSOLUTELY YES!

Dude, what is summer without watergun fights.

Heck I bought her one as soon as she could hold the trigger.

I don't own a gun.
I believe EDUCATION is key. Its a TOY not a gun. There's a very very big difference. Along the lines of its a movie and not for real.

By removing it completely, I think she'd find other ways and it would be even MORE tempting. There is play time and then there is the real world. Real guns in the hands of real idiots - Kill people!

Police have guns to protect the innocent.

Besides.. Soak wars, here we come!

Re: Toy Guns

So, here's my two cents. Chat Icon My DH's mother was SOOOOOO opposed to guns when my DH was a kid. She wouldn't let him have anything!!!..........not even a little plastic water gun. Instead she would buy these dorky little animal "water guns". She was nuts about it. Like hardcore.

And you know what??!!!..................it SOOOOOOO didn't matter that they didn't have the "real" thing. My DH said him and his brother would literally make a "gun" out of everything and anything they could get their hands on! Sticks, rulers, their fingers, anything and everything. I guess my point is (and by no means am I someone that has guns or would allow them in my home) that in the grand scheme of things, a toy gun is not the end of the world and whether you give them one or not, it won't keep them from being interested or pretending to have one even if it means their "gun" is a stick.

I think little boys and the fascination with guns is akin to little girls and dolls. It just seems like they all gravitate towards them. I don't think it's the worse thing in the world to play with toy guns and I don't think just because you play with a toy gun as a kid you will become a crazy, gun toting, shooter happy adult. Re: Toy Guns

My kids can have toy guns(that look like toys) and we talk about them as well. I do not want my kids to be curious at someone elses house.
I rather have them around here and bring up the questions about them here.
