Re: Recycling Gifts: Do You Do It? (Thoughts & Feelings On It?)
What you decribed would PISS me off... like so much for being thoughtful... I wouldnt even want the damn thing... I was regifted stuff in my bridal shower wishing well that i wasnt thrilled about either...
The only time I think its okay is if it clearly is not "connected" to a person already, doesnt fit your style, and you cannot tell its a regift... oh and never give it back to the person who gave it to you
ETA: I read through the posts and see that most people dont agree with me... I'd rather get something that cost $5 that came from the heart than $100 GC that wasnt even suppossed to go to me in the first place... I mean, if someone is going to do that, I'd rather them say "this was given to me but i think it would be a much better fit for you" than to try to cover up the original receiver's name

Re: Recycling Gifts: Do You Do It? (Thoughts & Feelings On It?)
Ouch! That hurts. If it were me and I really wasn't going to use the Nascar gift card, I'd probably gift it to you guys anyway on top of your Christmas gift! There's an okay way to re-gift and a crappy way to do it and that seems pretty crappy.
ETA: Or I would've bought you something from the Nascar store with the gift card and given it to you. I dunno, it strikes me as lazy. Tape over the names?

I don't see the big deal about re-gifting, especially if you know someone else would enjoy the said gift more than you but if I did do it, I would probably put a little more effort than just putting another label right on top and making it so obvious .

ITA Yes its a nice gift but its rude and unthoughful gift. That fact that she just covered her name with yours is rude. I would be ******.

I don't think I have. Anything I don't want I either give away or sell at a garage sale.
That's nuts that she just taped over their names. It's absurd to me - like you said, at least just take the card out and put it in something else. :shakes head:

I completely agree.
To me, the spirit of gift giving of the season is to give something with thought and heart behind it. For me, it wouldnt matter what the gift is, or the cost.
And I haven't "re-gifted' per se, but if I received something I think someone else would like better, I would give it to them, but not as my "real" gift.

I'd be a little peeved the person wasn't up front to start with.
our company gave me a free jersey. Since I wasn't going to wear it I gave it to BIL. I just gave it to him for no reason and told him it was from my company.

I understand why you are upset but I can see why she gave you the card. She knew you guys would use it. But you are entitled to feel upset about the situation.
I have actually had that happen to me. It was an wedding anniversary gift from a close family member and they forgot to cross out their name on the package. But DH and I laughed it off because we thought it was funny how they forgot to remove their name and figured they didn't like it.
I have been guilty of regifting but they are bottles of alcohol DH gets every year that we don't like. We bring them to parties and other people get to enjoy them

I don't think its a big deal
But I'll give you a story that is really kinda ridiculous
At my bridal shower, this couple gave us (they were older) a gift card to Bloomingdales...that had $37.18 left on it....yep, that's a total re-gift. And I'm upstate, there is no Bloomingdales around here. I just laughed and bought some north face gloves with it

Re: Recycling Gifts: Do You Do It? (Thoughts & Feelings On It?)
I am going to regift two items this year with no regrets. One is an expensive reading system that my daughter already owns and was given to her as a birthday gift (she is a christmas time baby) another gift was from a distant uncle and is a cute winnie the pooh phone, but it's really too young for her. She has cousins who fit the age range for both toys, so I wrapped them up in addition to another "new" toy each. If I didn't have kids to regift them to, I would donate them to toys for tots.
In your case, I wouldn't mind the regifting as much as the taping over the name. She could've put a little more effort into it.

Re: Recycling Gifts: Do You Do It? (Thoughts & Feelings On It?)
No shame in giving or accepting regifts, but I do have the class to not regift something with someone else's name on it and pass it off as something I bought.
With a giftcard, though, I don't know if I would be that upset. Maybe she didn't lay out the cash for it, but you still have $100 for a place you like. I'd accept it and not think twice.

Honestly I could careless where it came from. Its the thought that counts and she was nice to give you something you would appreciate. I really dont see the big deal at all.
Christmas isn't about gifts anyway. Don't forget the true meaning of the holidays.

Re: Recycling Gifts: Do You Do It? (Thoughts & Feelings On It?)
It was crappy of her to give you something with her name on it... but that's the only thing wrong in this situation.
I think the gift WAS thoughtful, as the OP said it's the kind of thing her and her DH like. Perhaps the SIL and BIL didn't have a lot of money this holiday season (who does?) and needed to come up with creative ways to cover all the people they needed to get gifts for. $100 toward anything is a pretty generous holiday gift... it's no ones business how she comes up with it IMO. It's somehow less of a gift because she didn't lay out the $100? I disagree. But leaving her name visible on it was tacky. I'd be annoyed over that.

That is what really upset me - don't get me wrong I'm loving the gift but yes I found it tacky for her not to put more effort into covering up her name and such...makes me think that she thinks DH and I are a bit dumb that we wouldn't notice that.

I definitely regift. I'm a dance teacher and get a lot of cookies/candies this time of year. SO I bring them everywhere I go as a little extra something. And I let my friends pick through the tons of bath stuff I get because let's be honest, I'm not goig to use it all.

Something like that wouldn't bother me since it's something you would like and use. The gift is still from them. If you hated NASCAR and couldn't use it, then it would be a crap gift but only because it was thoughtless not because it was recycled.
I agree.

See, I think there is thought.
She got the GC and thought, "ooo, this is the perfect gift for so & so because they love nascar". She didn't have to spend money on it but she could have used it herself so it is still out of pocket.
I wouldn't care, as long as it was something they knew I liked as opposed something really random.
