To whom do you give holiday bonuses?
I just moved into a house, and I'm wondering about holiday checks. I know my mom used to give checks to all of the above, plus others (snow plowers, people who pick up recycling, and a bunch more that I'm probably not remembering now). So I'm wondering whether this is universal...she used to spend literally hundreds of dollars on this...and I know I can't afford that. So I'm wondering what others do. Who do you pay and how much?

I can't afford it this year. Plus, I think my mail carrier changes based on day...same with my garbage men.
If I saw them often or something and couldn't afford it, maybe I would bake some cookies or something.

Honestly, IMO: Seeing as you just moved in, I wouldn't give this year. Wait until next year when you know how the service really is.
My only exception would be the garbage men if they took a lot of junk away.

We don't have any. We live in an apt. complex. I do not have any interaction with any of them. I don't get mail or UPS there. Garbage collectors pick up communal dumpsters. Landscapers come while I am at work.
I would give $$ to my maintenance guys...if they ever returned my calls or did the maintenance they're supposed to do

I dont understand giving bonuses to people like this.
Mail men, garbage men, school bus drivers... they're just doing their job.
I mean, unless for some reason they're going above and beyond?
I've heard people say 'Well our garbage men don't knock our cans all around'
... shouldn't do ALL be doing that?
The people I would give extra to our kids teachers but I don't think its necessary to give something to EVERYONE.
My friend gives something to every teacher, teachers asst, aide, class-helper, etc. for all three kids.
And they all go to speech so every speech person gets something.
She ends up dropping hundreds of bucks doing this. That's my whole budget!
I think focusing and rewarding the people who do extra good is what is important.

UPS, bc DH gets a lot of packages. And mailman--although our old mailman disappeared and it seems they are changing our new one daily so I don't know.
Garbage men are for our coop. They give us a hard time and sometimes don't take the garbage for no good reason so--no tip lol.

mailman....yes he is just doing his job...but I just do it to let him know I appreciate him and the work he does. I dont think there is ever a bad time or a reason to not show someone you appreciate them with a small gift, even if its cash. I just do it to be nice.

Dh and I used to give to the mailman. This was before the layoffs.......we were not able to last year.. This year, probably not anyone.

I just moved into a new apartment complex- the only ones I plan on tipping is the super of the building (he did help us out during the move in) and also the mail carrier. not sure how much to give each though...any thoughts on that as we've only been there three months??

We tip the UPS guy because we do a LOT of online shopping and it is always the same guy. We never see the same mailperson twice and we never see the sanitation workers at all since we live in an apartment building. We tip the super and handyman because we utilize their services fairly frequently, but that's it.

They're not supposed to as they are federal employees- same with village, city, state and all public service employees. This includes even teachers, and garbage, and yes even mail carriers.
But most do- but they do what I call "take and don't tell".

I don't tip any of them because I live in a large apartment building in Manhattan and I never see any of them. However, we do have to tip our doormen, super, porter and handyman. And it is SUPER expensive because there are a lot of them.

We tip our mailman and garbage men.
Mailman-I have known him for sooo many years, he is a neighbor and overall great guy. He goes out of his way to deliver our mail .
Garbagemen-they are great. They take everything we put out for them and some weeks it is a lot.

We tip our newspaper carrier and the garbage men if we are able to catch them during the season.
I do a lot of online shopping so I shoulod tip the UPS guy but we never seem him/them.

Where I live we don't have county or town employees that do trash, it's a private company. When I lived in MD, it was done by the county and different people all the time, so we did not tip them.

Every year this comes up and every year I that people tip these workers.
The trash collector tip is nothing short of a bribe.. I often see on here "if we give them a tip they take big pieces of garbage later in the year" soooo, you're giving them money to break the rules of their job  It's another weird, corrupt thing that happens on LI and no where else really, I pick on my Dad every year for doing it.
Mail carriers are Federal employees that are not allowed to receive cash from the people they serve. Period.
UPS.. just doing their job.. though you could bake them some cookies if they're extra special!
