It really boils down to priorities. If people were better educated on the benefits of healthy eating, and the federal government helped mandate legislation to provide more funds for wellness programs and put a stop to the use of high fructose corn syrup and imported goods with little to no nutritional benefit, then younger generations might have a fighting chance to reverese some of the damage has been done.

True!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

You see the commericals for high fructose corn syrup.. I can't believe it!

Cane sugar is making a come back.

TBH...the mcdonalds playplaces are WAY more appealing to my dd then the junkie toy. Are they taking the playplaces away as well? Or could this be categorized as the "fitness" these toddlers get after eating a sh!tty meal?
Taking the toy away isnt going to make or break the deal.

Ridiculous, but I do understand their motivation.....but toys have been staple of happy meals forever and the obesity rates were not as high as they are now.

Its not the toys in the Happy Meals, its the lack of exercise, the fact that kids dont play outside anymore. Its the "always on the go" culture that doesnt lend itself easily to healthy home cooked family dinners. Its also a complacent and lazy generation of parents or just overscheduled, or a combo of all 3, who were raised during the emergence of instant meals, frozen dinners, fast food, minute this, minute that, expensive raw foods, etc. We are really the first generation to have ALWAYS had these options available to us as adults, and the children pay the price, but its what we know.

Its not the toy thats the problem, in fact, its probably the least of the problems.

ITA!!!

I couldnt agree more!!! Taking a toy out of the happy meal isnt going to stop the obesity rate of children.

I agree as well. It is not any one elses responsibility to regulate and decide what my child eats. I as a parent am responsible for teaching my child healthy eating habits, etc.

McDonald's doesn't make me drive my car through the drive thru when I'm out shopping and I've got to get the kids dinner quickly. I do. I take full repsonsibility for that. I'm not going to point fingers and blame the "establishment".

I think a lot of the time people would rather point the finger and blame someone else than taking account for their own actions.

I'm sorry, but no one from McDonald's is knocking on my door, putting a gun to my head, and shoving a Big Mac down my throat.

People CHOOSE to eat fast food for a variety of factors, as I've stated in rpevious posts.

In no way, shape or form is McDonald's forcing ANYONE to eat their food. People knowingly choose to eat there. If you don't want to eat there, don't. But some people do regardless of the health risks. And that is THEIR choice.

Banning fast food places is a ridiculous notion.

Well sure. This is nothing new. People lack the ability to take responsibility for their own choices and blame someone else. Because if they did, they would then have to face the consequences of ramifications. And then they lack the ability to handle the consequences properly. It is a vicious cycle.

But at some point, people need to stop bittching and moaning about McD's forcing them to eat their food and realize that THEY are the ones sitting at the drive-thru ordering crap.

People need to take personal responsibility for their choices.

The ban is because they are specifically marketing to children with the toy. That is what the ban is based on. Not just the fact that there is a toy in there with an unhealthy meal...it's that the commercials and advertising is directly aimed at children much like cigarette commercials had done before they were banned.

.... and Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft push their video games at kids, so we should ban those because it makes kids not exercise. We should ban M&M commercials, too, since candy causes obesity.

It's a slippery slope, and one I'd rather not get on. *I'll* decide what my DC can and can't eat. I don't need the gov't to parent my kids for me.

Everyone can blame whatever they want, but the respsonsibility lies with the parent. It IS a slippery slope, and the only thing that matters it that you (generally) feel you make the best decision for your child. Banning fast food would never ever ever ever ever happen, so people shouldn't even make such ridiculous statements.

I sincerely doubt the federal government even WANTS to get involved in policing what people eat, etc. They are have a hard enough time as it is providing proper food and nutrition guidelines and programs as it is Chat Icon

ETA: People don't want to actively make the choice for themselves to not eat fast food. They think if the government bans fast food joints, MAGICALLY, the problem is solved and they didn't have to actively make the choice. If it isn't fast food it is something else.

Agreed but I don't think it's a fair comparison.

You could say the same thing about smoking and that the FCC shouldn't have stepped in to ban cigarette commercials that have cartoon characters since it's up to a parent whether their child smokes or not.

I'm not sure I agree with the banning or not but I would like to see A LOT LESS marketing directed towards children OVERALL. And yes, I can control that to an extend by limiting tv and advertising access.

I agree it's ultimately up to parents, but what happened to "It takes a village to raise a child"? Everyone, all stakeholders (from media/advertising companies, to govt officials, to corporations to families, etc.) need to be accountable and take responsibility.

"It takes a village" is such an outdated philosophy in this world today. How can you expect people to be accountable to others when they are not accountable for themselves?

I don't disagree with you on that. At all. But what is so wrong with helping to make choices easier for parents and children? Is it really necessary to have a toy in a meal that is so unhealthy? Why not take away part of the marketing draw?

I dont think adults need help making the choice if they are committed to the well being of their child. As an ADULT and a PARENT, I am MORE THAN CAPABLE of resisting the draw of the happy meal toy and since my child cannot get to McDs himself or buy himself McDs, as his mother, its my job to resist for him. I dont know of any parents who shove McDs down their childs throat bc they couldnt say no to the toy. Thats so absurd. All a parent has to say is NO, end of story.

ETA: the toy has ALWAYS been a part of McDs and was NOT an issue when people were responsible for the health and families well being. Again, it IS NOT the toy that is the issue, the toy has ALWAYS been there. The Happy Meal has not changed, the culture has.

Yes! This is the crux of the issue...Being a capable parent who can say no. But people choose NOT to exercise their responsibility to their child and then blame the fast food places. Am I absolutely bonkers in thinking that is completely azz backwards???

I don't agree with this. Honestly, nobody is forcing parents to go to McDonalds. Parents have the choice to bring their kids there. I'm sorry, but DS is far more interested in the toy or the playyard stuff than his food anyway.

Re: San Francisco bans the Happy Meal

"Under the ban - scheduled to take effect December 2011 - restaurants in the Golden Gate City would be allowed to distribute toys with meals only if they contained fewer than 600 calories and less than 640 mg of sodium, according to Canadian broadcaster CTV. In addition, less than 35 percent of calories in the meals could come from fat (less than 10 percent from saturated fat)."

I don't see what is so unreasonable about this. Will this solve the obesity problem? No, but every little bit helps.

If parents are going to bring their kids to McDonald's it doesn't make a difference if there's a toy or no toy. I think offering apples as a side is a start but no one is going to mcdonald's for a healthy meal or snack.

ITA. It is the parents' choice to take their kids to McDonalds instead of making or getting them a healthier alternative.

It's wasn't the tobacco companies responsibility not to make you or your child smoke but they have limited their ability to market in certain ways. Why is it okay to do that for one hazardous substance but not another?

Like I said, I"m not sure I agree with the ban at all.
