My sister lives in Lexington Kentucky and it's considered a no no to have events on the same day as a big horse race.

When I tried to block hotel rooms for my wedding six months in advance, I was told that everything was filled because I was getting married the weekend the U.S. Open Golf Tournament was starting in Shinnecock Hills. Now I got married in Western Suffolk Cty and my reception was in Nassau but I was told that ALL of the hotels were booked as far as Plainview for that weekend. The one place that had some rooms available were going to charge me $250 a night as that was their U.S. Open rate

A friend of mine got married during World Series games and all of the guys were in their cars listening to the game

Yes I did. I wanted to make sure certain friends from CO (where we live) would fly to NY so we planned around a big college game that everyone goes to. It really wasn't a big deal though since we weren't set on a particular date and didn't need a church.

Nope. DH & I are big Yankee fans, but we got married in October, right at the end of the regular season, the day before the playoffs started, and went on a 3 week honeymoon.

And for all the PP on this thread who mentioned Sunday parties during football season - my DD's b-day party is on a Sunday this year.

my sister had 2 kids that are close in age so they were christened one year apart....both years it was on Superbowl Sunday Everyone was pizzzed....esp when it was the second year in a row. Of course I wouldnt have missed my niece and nephews christenings for anything, but we were all not happy about it. And everyone kind of rushed out after to get home in time to watch the superbowl.

if it were my event, i would totally avoid a major event like superbowl or the world series.

I would consider the Superbowl. The World Series is too unpredictable with dates and number of games.

First thisng out of my DH's mouth .. If we are invited to an event during one of those times he either wont go or b!tch the whole time and keep looking for a TV.. He would be the WORST guest at the event. He is better off not going.

Yup. We were not allowed to plan to have our wedding anytime during football season b/c DH didn't want to have to miss any games Granted football season is winter anyway, and we hate the cold, so it worked out, lol.

I think this is all a matter of priorities -- guys and big sports fans are going to notice stuff like this but i would venture to guess the majority of people wouldn't really notice.... unless it was the DAY OF the superbowl which we know in advance. However, the World Series is kind of decided verrrry last minute based on wins and shiit.... SIL had BIL's surprise 30th bday party the day of the World Series final game -- she had to plan way in advance and got kind of screwed on that one.

Then, you could get stuck with a random odd situation like me: we had planned our engagement party for July 9th 2006. Seems like a normal date, right? It just so happened that, and there would be no way of us knowing this prior, the World Cup final game was on that day... the date of that all depends on who wins what/when so it was a crapshoot. Now, for us, we thought "not a single person in any of our family EVER watches soccer so no biggie". Well, that changed once it happened to be ITALY in the World Cup.

Randomly, my husband's entire side instantly became soccer fans after NEVER watching it in their entire lives just because they happen to be Italian. They were all in the bar that joins the restaurant we had the EParty in (Tellers in West Islip BTW).

My husband was PISSSSSED. He thought it was rude and ridiculous especially considering no one cares about soccer before or after that date. He had words with a few of his fam members (a cousin and an uncle) after light-heartedly saying "ok guys how about coming back in for my eparty now?" and they were like "no" lol he was like listen jackasssses hahaa.

I didn't really care but it was funny and I'll never forget it!

OMG we have this conversation all the time with a close friend of ours.

I wouldn't have it on the superbowl but I wouldn't revolve around the whole playoff football schedule.

We went to a 3 year old birthday party Opening Weekend of Football at 315 - and this was the topic of conversation.

So I flipped the question on DH and asked him, "What would happen if DD/DS's birthday fell in January - when would they have their birthday party"

His Response
1) Friday night - which I argued is stupid because people work

2) Saturday - although there are playoff games so we would have to figure out the playoff schedule and find an off time/day.

3) After the superbowl is over

No. When I planned DD's christening I planned it on a Sunday during football season. I ended up having to put a TV in the room and half the party was in chairs around it.

Yes. DH and his friends are into horse racing. We chose our wedding date to avoid all of the triple crown races. I didn't want to hear people ******** about missing the race or making accommodations during the reception so people could watch it.

We didn't consider this, but our wedding was actually during the Yankees-Mets World Series in 2000. Quite a few people were glued to the television in the lobby, but I didn't let it bother me. Our band played "Take me out to the ballgame" and announced the score whenever either team got a run, I thought it was a nice touch.

Nope..guess i'm an outcast. DD was christened on superbowl sunday. That was the date that was available & we took it. Party was over by 5. Now we are having her birthday party on a Sunday during football season. Sunday works better for our family.

Yup! When we planned our wedding, my dad gave us the "blackout dates" for playoff baseball, football, and hockey. DH told him no problem since he agreed with him.

Our family is really into sports and honestly if I did plan a party on a big sporting event weekend, all my guests would be huddled around the TV instead of enjoying the party. I had a small engagement party at my house and the NFL draft was on and all the guys were watching it in the living room the whole time!

yes in fact my wedding was planned around DH's favorite sports (football and baseball). he let me choose february or march. he didnt want to be on our HM when any playoffs were going on cuz he knew he'd wanna watch them.
although im not a sports fanatic i do understand it. he went to a wedding once during the FB draft and guys were ontheir phones and looking for tvs. as the party host i would be miserable if that was the case at my event so why not just avoid it all together?
