Just to clarify... I didn't say he moved to Holbrook. He always lived there ... she moved there to live near him. I was going to and from her house when I was pulled over. If she hasn't moved there... I wouldn't have been in that town.
Also, I didn't say it was terrible the cops were there... I said the detectives were just doing their job. But, if they are pulling over random cars looking for drugs (more then once) it's probably because there are drugs/dealers in the area.
So he lived there and THEN became an addict because he met a heroin dealer. Ok, gotcha--
Did the detectives SAY they were looking for drugs? What did they tell you? What time of day was this?
Your ridiculous to think I'd sit here and make up stories about Holbrook. Actually my friends boyfriend started on pills... and then like most addicts switched to heroin because the pills got too expensive. He didn't just meet a heroin dealer one day and decide to start doing it.
The detectives asked me if I had any drugs on me, asked if they can just check my car quick, asked me what I was doing on that block, and asked me the name of the person I was going to see. After checking my license... they let me go.
See. he started on pills and then switched to heroin.
You stated in a previous post that you rather be in a town where there is only a pot problem. Believe me...pot now...something worse down the road.
Do you think your town is drug free? Do you think there is only "pot" in your town? Can I ask what town you are in?
I'm in Shoreham, I wouldn't say it's completely drug free... I'm sure there's some people that do drugs around here. I'm just saying I never had detectives pull me over and ask to look in my car around here. In fact, I've rarely seen a detective out here.
My Good friend has been a teacher in shoreham wading river high school for 8 years and believe me there is PLENTY of drugs going on, probably a lot more than you are aware of. And having a detective pull you over isn't such a bad thing, it shows that the town is trying to handle any drug situation that there might be, rather than pretending like it does not exist and sweeping it under the rug
I don't think the issue is swept under the rug out here. I just don't think it's as bad. I think they patrol where the presence is needed. So, the dealers they are looking for are in Mastic/Shirley which is in the same precinct as Shoreham. The OP asked about Holbrook which I why my comments were about Holbrook. If you want all the con's about Shoreham ... I have an opinion about that too. I have opinions about a lot of things... I'm sure you wouldn't agree with them all. But, that doesn't change my opinion about Holbrook.
BUT your opinion isn't a very accurate one considering you were leaving a drug addicts house and you are suprised that you got pulled over???????????????

But your issue was getting pulled over twice in Holbrook. BUT...you go on to say that your friends bf was an addict. You don't find that odd that you got pulled over after leaving his house? NO ONE is saying there are no drugs in any town. What we are saying is that if you hang out with someone who does drugs, you ARE going to be picked out more than a person who does not. And again, I am GLAD that the police are doing these random checks as we need these addicts out of our town and off our streets away from our children.

The first time was on the way there... and it was down by Vets Hwy on Grundy. Which is a decent ways away from the house I was going to. So, no I don't think that was the reason the first time. The second time was on Terry St. The detective was sitting in the fire department parking lot... which is also blocks from the house... so I am sure leaving that specific house wasn't the reason.

You can have your opinion of Holbrook. You are entitled. BUT your opinion is based on getting stopped 2 TIMES by a detective AFTER leaving your friends house where her heroin addict boyfriend lived. IMO, maybe you shouldn't be visiting your friends house where her heroin addict boyfriend lived.

If you like to think that..it's fine. I am not responding because of the town Holbrook. I am responding because you seem to really believe that there is "limited" drugs in your town and that "the dealers they are looking for are in Mastic/Shirley which is in the same precinct as Shoreham". You wouldn't recommend Holbrook because of the "drug issue" but you entered it to visit your friend who lived with her addict boyfriend. I am sorry to say this but due to the circumstances, I would respect someone else's opinion of Holbrook (good and bad) over yours.
If and when you have kids and they are in school, I hope you think differently. Don't be naive.

Re: As much info on Holbrook WANTED
My DH rented in Holbrook before we bought our house and we both agreed that Holbrook didn't seem to have a sense of community that we were looking for. Maybe the different neighborhoods located within Holbrook do have their own mini-communities, but it seemed very spaced out to us. I prefer to live in an area where we can walk to parks, the beach, downtown restaurants, etc. In Holbrook we always had to drive 5-10 min to get somewhere -- walking wasn't an option.

Exactly. If I was asking about an area, I would rather have the opinion of people of people who have lived in the area or have more experience than getting pulled over after leaving a drug addict's (possible dealer) home.

I guess you are not familiar with the area as police are ALWAYS at the fire dept. and when you do call them, they come right away. There obviously was something going on and your truck was probably identified as one that they were looking for.

And that is why the neighbors WANT detectives and police stopping people. If it has to be random, then it has to be random. I have NO problem with that because I obviously am not doing anything wrong or visiting someone who is doing (and maybe selling) drugs.

Holbrook itself is nice but I agree with what someone mentioned - there is a bad drug issue in the area (Ronkonkoma etc).
Can anyone name a town with out a drug issue?
drugs are an issue in general- white, black, rich, poor- unless you live in a bubble there are drugs in every town
Yep.
I agree with this too. Drugs are everywhere.
I was just agreeing with what someone stated about the Holbrook area - I happen to know from personal experience, someone who is very close to me had a problem in those particular areas....as did many of his friends...in that specific area. Just sayin'.

Yes, that all depends on where you live. In many places in Holbrook you CAN walk to many of these places.

I just wanted to add that in my particular development(of homes) we have a neighborhood watch. There is a civic association that keeps the area clean, well lit & safe. We hardly ever have any flights that pass over us and we don't hear the fire department at all.

And ever think you were pulled over because you were leaving the house of a drug addict
I am sure he was being watched if he frequently visited dealers.
You are the company you keep, ya know
I was thinking the same thing!! the police were clearly watching the house

Re: As much info on Holbrook WANTED
I live just south of Holbrook.
I think it's a nice little residential town with nearby shopping and good access to major roads. The neighborhoods seem to be very well kept.
I chose not to live there because I didn't feel it had a very strong 'town center' - you know a small town type Main street. That was something that I was looking for. The school district was also much bigger than I wanted.
But those things are personal preferences not any kind of slap against the town itself. In fact, overall - I think it's a very good town, with a lot of residential pride. I know a lot of people who live there and are very happy!
As to drugs.. they are everywhere. I don't associate Holbrook as being a crime, drug or violence capital of Long Island in any sense, so I personally wouldn't worry about that particular issue.

I think it's all about giving an educated answer through living in a town for awhile and experiencing the neighborhood. I would be listening to the homeowners and parents who live in the town and really get a good feel of the community and schools. Good Luck in your decision!
