Re: As much info on Holbrook WANTED

Holbrook itself is nice but I agree with what someone mentioned - there is a bad drug issue in the area (Ronkonkoma etc).

With every town post, there is always a comment about "bad drug issue". I don't get involved with these threads because they always turn ugly. If you live in the town mentioned... you are offended. If you post a comment stating "looked in so and so town but decided against it because of drug issue" it's because you "think" you bought/live in a town without a drug issue. Every single town has some sort of a drug issue.

IMO, a "town" is not going to determine whether or not your child will get involved in drugs.

There are some areas that are a lot worse then others. Some areas only have kids that have been caught with pot. Others have kids getting caught with pills. A friend of mine lives in West Islip (not sure which district they are in) one of her kids classmates was caught with crack. I would prefer to stay in areas that have a small amount of pot rather then areas known for crack and heroin.

ETA: Just because there are drugs in an area doesn't mean everyone's kids are doing them. It's up to parents to teach their kids to stay away. I was simply pointing out that I know someone who lived in Holbrook... not only was he an addict but he said there were a lot of dealers in the area.

"CAUGHT" is the key word. There are no towns that just have a "pot" problem. Where there is "pot" there is also heroin, crack, etc.

I love Holbrook. I have a bunch of friends that live there and I also looked into buying there. Like a bunch of previous posters said every town has some sort of drug issue. Good luck on your search.

JMO but I think that town has a pretty bad drug problem. One of our friends rented there for a little bit and her boyfriend said it was really bad with heroin and pills. He always said there are a lot of drug dealers in the area (i guess he'd know because now he's in rehab for heroin use)

I've been pulled over twice by detectives around the corner from her house (which has never happened to me anywhere else). They were just doing their jobs but driving a nice car with shiny rims and tint doesn't make me a dealer. I won't even drive through there at night anymore.

So I wouldn't recommend the area . it is very convenient though because its close to the LIE

1. I find it quite odd that he STARTED doing Heroin once he moved in that neighborhood-Chat Icon
2. I wouldn't mind ONE bit to be pulled over if I was innocent because I want my town to be safe and if that is what it takes, then I am all for it.
I am an active participant in my town to have it a nice place to live. I will not put my head in the sand and hope it all goes away. If I see something, I say something. If those heroin dealers were on my block, you BET the cops would be there ALL.THE.TIME.

Just to clarify... I didn't say he moved to Holbrook. He always lived there ... she moved there to live near him. I was going to and from her house when I was pulled over. If she hadn't moved there... I wouldn't have been in that town.

Also, I didn't say it was terrible the cops were there... I said the detectives were just doing their job. But, if they are pulling over random cars looking for drugs (more then once) it's probably because there are drugs/dealers in the area.

ANy drug addict can find drugs or a drug dealer. Maybe your friend had such experiences in Holbrook because he surrounded himself with drugs. He can move to any town and find drug dealers, thats what drug addicts do.

I grew up in Holtsville, next to Holbrook and I am a teacher. I would buy a house there and send my children to Sachem school district. It is a nice middle class town.

Your ridiculous to think I'd sit here and make up stories about Holbrook. Actually my friends boyfriend started on pills... and then like most addicts switched to heroin because the pills got too expensive. He didn't just meet a heroin dealer one day and decide to start doing it.

The detectives asked me if I had any drugs on me, asked if they can just check my car quick, asked me what I was doing on that block, and asked me the name of the person I was going to see. After checking my license... they let me go.

it sounds like the police were about to make an arrest and your car was similar or it looked like you just went to the house in question

this could happen in any town - at any time

they just had a major drug bust on the north shore- I doubt anyone would say not to move there

I do not think you are making up stories. The point is, the person you are speaking of HAD a drug problem so that has NOTHING to do with the town but them. Every town will have drug addicts and dealers. You can't say the ENTIRE town is like that because of someone who obviously had a prior problem.

It seems that there must have been some type of bust going on when you got stopped. I have never seen random stoppings looking for drugs.

If it only happened once I would ok maybe, but as I said earlier... it happened on 2 separate occasions. Before any of that... I never heard anything about Holbrook. So, my few experiences and what I've heard first hand from someone that lived there is enough to keep me from saying that's a good area.

ETA - Again... this is MY OPINION of Holbrook. I' m not saying everyone should feel the same way. Obviously you posters that live there don't see a problem with it. I guess it's relative to what your used to.

See. he started on pills and then switched to heroin.

You stated in a previous post that you rather be in a town where there is only a small amount of pot. Believe me...pot now...something worse down the road. There is no such thing as a town ONLY having an issue with a small amount of pot.

Do you think your town is drug free? Do you think there is only "pot" in your town? Can I ask what town you are in?

I'm in Shoreham, I wouldn't say it's completely drug free... I'm sure there's some people that do drugs around here. I'm just saying I never had detectives pull me over and ask to look in my car around here. In fact, I've rarely seen a detective out here.

My Good friend has been a teacher in shoreham wading river high school for 8 years and believe me there is PLENTY of drugs going on, probably a lot more than you are aware of. And having a detective pull you over isn't such a bad thing, it shows that the town is trying to handle any drug situation that there might be, rather than pretending like it does not exist and sweeping it under the rug

That is exactly what I was saying. I am GLAD that they were pulling people over as that means they are doing their job and are trying to get rid of the junk that is around. If it takes them to stop me, I have NO problem with it.
Maybe I would have a problem with it if I WAS doing it myself---Chat Icon

Sure, there are drugs in Shoreham and there are also detectives pulling people over in Shoreham too.

You got pulled over in Holbrook after leaving your friends house where her heroin addict boyfriend also lived.

You said you got pulled over 2 times in Holbrook and the only reason you entered Holbrook was because you were visiting your friend. Coincidence? Maybe the cops patrol that area because they were tipped off by the neighbors.

I don't think the issue is swept under the rug out here. I just don't think it's as bad. I think they patrol where the presence is needed. So, the dealers they are looking for are in Mastic/Shirley which is in the same precinct as Shoreham. The OP asked about Holbrook which I why my comments were about Holbrook. If you want all the con's about Shoreham ... I have an opinion about that too. I have opinions about a lot of things... I'm sure you wouldn't agree with them all. But, that doesn't change my opinion about Holbrook.
