Moms of boys...is "pretty" offensive?
so, I had Luce at the mall yesterday and a mom and her teen daughter were over the moon for him.
the mom used basically every synonym for good looking in the book and finally said "he is just so PRETTY".
after she said that, she looked taken aback at her own word, and apologized saying "I shouldn't have really said that" since he is a boy.
I laughed and told her we were macho enough to take "pretty" as a compliment, and we went on our separate ways.
but I was just curious...DO people find the use of "pretty" for a baby boy as offensive? I know it has slightly feminine connotations (especially as they get older) but her reaction was so strong it had me thinking maybe it's a big NO NO for a boy.
how would you feel?

I wouldn't be offended... I'd take it to mean the same as gorgeous.

We have a pretty boy over here too and get asked if he is a girl a lot...it drives DH nuts when a stranger calls him pretty but I take it as a compliment!

I wouldn't think twice about it but DH always tells me not to call the baby boys "beautiful" so he gave me a complex about saying it.

I don't think it would bother me at all. I use that term when talking about some guys I know. They're pretty boys... I'm actually attracted to "pretty boys."

Re: Moms of boys...is "pretty" offensive?
I must admit I have used it for boys before (even though I knew they were boys).
My son was wearing a yellow tractor outfit that said "I dig trucks" and a woman once said "she is beautiful" and I told her he was a boy. She then said "Sorry, I thought he was too pretty to be a boy" In that sense I found it offensive. But I wouldn't have in any other normal way

I think all babies are pretty homogenous looking until about a year, if even that, and are all pretty, boys and girls

Re: Moms of boys...is "pretty" offensive?
my DS is definitely "pretty". He'd make a beautiful little girl but is just as good looking as a boy.
I take zero offense!

I would not take it offensively but no one has ever said it. One Mom said they looked like "rough and tumble boys" whatever that means

Re: Moms of boys...is "pretty" offensive?
I don't think it's offensive at all. It is a more specific kind of attractiveness in my mind though. Both of my kids are good looking (to me). But Robbie isn't pretty - he's handsome. Noah is more pretty than he is handsome.

Re: Moms of boys...is "pretty" offensive?
Lots of people have said DH is "pretty" or "beautiful" and I don't mind. As long as he's not a "pretty boy" when he's older, call him whatever you like!
If I were you I'd take it as a compliment that I tend to agree with

Re: Moms of boys...is "pretty" offensive?
I don't think so. I call DS beautiful all the time - DH doesn't care either, but my brother for some reason thinks you can't call a boy beautiful. So, I'd imagine he'd feel the same about "pretty."
So funny you asked this b/c Saturday we were with family and my cousin said DS was just "So pretty" and she apologized but said he'd have to get used to it.

I always get comments that my DS is so "pretty" that he can pass as a girl...I take it as a compliment. He does have soft features.

I don't mind but if you tell ds (2 1/2) that he's pretty, he'll yell & say no, I'm ugly! He only wants to be called handsome
