Records: Kayla Gerdes told police crash at least victim 'was old'
The teen driver who prosecutors said was high on prescription painkillers when she drove a van into a 69-year-old Hempstead woman mowing her lawn, killing her, said that she found some consolation in the victim's age.
"The thing that made me feel not so bad was she was old," Kayla Gerdes, 18, told police investigators at 2:10 a.m. Wednesday - about 16 hours after the accident Tuesday morning, according to court records obtained by Newsday.
"I mean, 70 years is a long time to live," Gerdes said, according to the documents.
Defense attorney John R. Lewis Jr. said Gerdes, who he said had struggled with drug addiction, was "absolutely inconsolable" when she learned about the death of victim Rebecca Twine, who lived at the Cathedral Avenue house where the crash occurred.
The accident happened at about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, police said, when Gerdes, of Meister Boulevard in Freeport, had insisted on taking the wheel of a work van from her boss, Brian Steele, 29, of Oceanside, because she thought he was driving too slowly. Gerdes was worried she was late for an appearance at criminal court in Mineola on charges of stealing and selling her stepfather's jewelry last October, police said.
Lewis said Gerdes had been in rehabilitation for drug addiction but left after seven days, apparently after insurance coverage ran out. Lewis said that she was released early from a 28-day drug rehabilitation program because her mother's insurer would pay for only seven days worth of treatment.
"You have a young, 18-year-old kid who's absolutely beside herself that this happened," Lewis said. He said she was "absolutely inconsolable when she found out that woman died."
Gerdes admitted that at the time of the crash she had been "taking prescription drugs." A Nassau prosecutor said Gerdes admitted to police that she had been high on Xanax and oxycodone, and that she had drugs with her at the time of the accident.
She pleaded not guilty in First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday to second-degree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, driving while ability impaired by drugs and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
She was held on $200,000 bond or $100,000 bail and is due to appear in court Friday.

I heard a clip of this on the news this morning. She was screaming and saying it was an accident so just leave her alone. Absolutely disgusting

 My parents are close to 70 and it breaks my heart that someone could dismiss them & their worth so easily. It's a complete disgrace. Lots of  for the victim & her family.

I have been following this story and I don't why because it pizzes me off more and more.
It's like she has NO Heart whatsoever!
I saw her on the news last night telling the reporters to "Leave her alone"!
She needs to go away for a very LONG time!

I felt the exact same way when I read it, it really affected me!

A life is a life, no matter if it belongs to someone 70 days, 70 months, 70 years old.
Sounds like this troubled child will never have remorse for taking a life.
Honestly, I hope she never gets out of prison once convicted.

Wow. I hope she is prosecuted to the highest extent possible.
I guess it wont be a big deal if she goes to jail for years because, well, she is young, so she'll still have time left when she is finally released.

I heard this on the radio this morning. She is such a POS. It's bad enough to be driving under the influence of drugs, but then to have NO REMORSE?!!! My father is 70, my mother is 65. The idea that to this woman, the remainder of their lives aren't worth anything makes me feel like crying. I hope she rots in jail.

I heard her on the radio this morning and to me, she's just a waste of life... a drug addicted kid whose more afraid of not being able to get her next fix who will say anything she can that she thinks will help the situation.
At least that was my thought before I heard that she said "at least she was old". I suppose I can take the same view... at least this kid's a drug addict so I won't feel bad about her rotting away in jail.

But wait, she was SCREAMING and her PLEA was that it was an accident and that her car lost control and she was sorry.
Then I hear she was on prescrip pills and then she writes that ridiculous statement.
Sweetheart, def not a way plea your innocence!

Oh I hope ADA Maureen BURIES this one.
I have to call her and see if she is on this case. I sure as hellll hope so. I know whoever is will really give it to her but I'm thankful this is in Nassau so that she will get a REAL punishment.
This is just sick, yet, at the same time not surprising. This is the TYPICAL driving while impaired attitude -- it's not me, not my fault, and let me try to find some LAME disgusting excuse or "silver lining" to take the blame off MYSELF.
TYPICAL!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is why we should have NO tolerance and NO pity for these disgusting individuals!!!

I felt the exact same way when I read it, it really affected me!
Same for me. I thought of my parents as well. 70 years old might be a long life to an 18 year old, but not to me. I would be devastated if my parents were taken away from me that young!
