First I have to say..I am so surprised by how many of you live in the Middle Village/Glendale area..we should definitely have a get together! I always feel like I am the only one from Queens!
I live in Middle Village, right near Atlas Park. I love this area. Definitely residential and even though we complain about parking, we really always get a spot either on this block or a block away. I'm just really lazy! lolz.
I find rent in Middle Village to be crazy! Seriously, it just depends on finding a good deal. I helped my friend find two apartments right around here. The one she's in right now is near Grover Cleveland, 2 bedroom and she's paying $1300. Right before that one she was in Upper Glendale, a few blocks from Atlas but on the Glendale side...it was only a studio but it was $800..
Another friend of mine found a BEAUTIFUL HUGE apartment, right off of freshpond which I believe is considered Middle Village but I'm not sure. If you take Metropolitan and make a left on Freshpond and then make another left down one of those blocks she's right there. Her apartment is beautiful and she has access to the yard. 2 bedrooms, utilities included for $1400!!
Look around..and don't hesitate to call and ask if they are willing to lower the price when they are asking $1500 or $1600..if they like you and see your a good family sometimes its worth it for them..it can't hurt! Plus, I think they expect to be chewed down and go with a higher asking price...
Good luck! I will keep my eyes open for you! I'd love to have someone to go on baby playdates with in the area! hehe

Parking is subjective. Glendale has much better parking than Forest Hills, but it's still pretty awful! lol
I grew up in Upper Glendale --- definitely look around for a 2 family (72nd street through 88th street, from Myrtle to 78th Ave). Most are 2 or 3 bedroom (depending if they closed the front porch off to make a bedroom). They range for $1200-$1800 depending on the condition. (B55, Q29 buses)
Middle Village / Maspeth border also has tons of 2-families and are close to transportation (Q29, Q38, Q57 buses)
Definitely buy the Times News Weekly and look at apartments. Call the local RE's for listings also. A lot of people list through them. My MIL is rented her apartment through an agent.
If your DH works in Brooklyn, Howard Beach may not be a bad idea. If he takes the bus up to Jamacia Ave, he can take the m,j,z train to downtown Bklyn.
If you have any specific questions (regarding a certain block, transportation, etc...), FM me. I lived in Glendale for 29 years and Maspeth for 5 years. I just moved to LI a few months ago.

I just texted my friend who lives off Freshpond to ask her what neighborhood her apt is considered to be in and where she found the listing. I'll let you know when I hear back from her.
I'll be 16 weeks on Monday! I'm due August 30th. I have my Level II on April 15th..I am dying to find out if its a boy or a girl!

The OP would be hard pressed trying to find a rental for the amount she is saying for in Whitestone.
My MIL rents a 2 bedroom in a house & pays $1350/month. The 2nd bedroom is small, plus she pays her own utilities.

You could definitely get a 2 bedroom for that price. I personally don't think parking is great in Middle Village but I guess that depends on what you are looking for. I know a great realtor at Tscherne in Middle Village if you are interested. You can FM me if you want his info.

Here's an ad i'm reading right now in the times newsweekly from Crifasi real estate, a local, well know real estate agency in Middle Village that I've used before "Middle Village, 5 rooms, 2 bedrooms, small pet ok, h/w floors, use of yard, heat & water included $1400" sounds like a real craphole

I bet you it is. What you read (especially from an agency ad) and what you see, is a big difference. Believe me, I've seen a lot of places in the neighborhood as I've lived in Maspeth previously for a very long time. I'm not trying to make this into a debate or anything, I just don't appreciate you coming out and making comments about what is true and what is not true when you're not even from the neighborhood.

Im sure there ARE *SOME* places in Middle Village for my budget, whether they are decent or not is a different story.
I will continue looking and let you ladies know where I end up and what kind of deal I got. I should be moving in the next 2-3 months.

Believe me, I've seen a lot of places in the neighborhood as I've lived in Maspeth previously for a very long time. My whole family lives in Middle Village. I'm originally from Glendale (the not so great area you mentioned before), like you're from Maspeth. So I'm from the 'neighborhood' as much as you are. All I said was that it is possible to find an apt. in the OP's budget from what am I reading in a local newspaper today. What's a craphole to you might not be to someone else.

Hi Ladies..
Can you recommend any good areas/neighborhoods in Queens to live in (specifically rent)?
We currently live in Glendale in a 1 bedroom but we have a baby on the way and are looking for a 2 bedroom. While I dont hate Glendale, if any of you know the area its torture for parking.
Also, I prefer a two family house or SMALL apt. building... NOT a big one like a live in now (16 units). Ideally I would like a residential area.
One last thing (sorry)... it needs to be somewhat close to transportation (subway/bus) because my husband has to get to downtown brooklyn everyday.
ETA: Our budget is $1400 (max) including bills. I know, its tight!

We were renting in Middle Village, it was a 3 bedroom , 2nd floor of a 2 family house, walking distance to M train and buses to Queens blvd R,G and I think V train. It was also walking distance to babysrus/toysrus and Kmart and other stores. Also walking distance fro Christ the kind Catholic school. The rent was pretty reasonable too 1000 not including bills, with bills it was around
1400 or less. The landlady is an old lady, very sweet. Parking was ok too, not great, but not too bad at all. Oh and it's only 5 min drive to Atlas Park. We moved out about 5 months ago, I know that the landlady's daughter was going to clean up and renovate the apt. So there is a chance it's still available.
I can ask and see if the apt is still available if you'd like , just FM me and let me know.

Oh and we live in Howard Beach now, and we really, like it. I'm sure there are some rentals here , not sure what the rent is or about the transportation to Brooklyn or anything , but just an idea if you wanted to look into it.
