How did you know your home was "THE ONE?"

Anything specific?

Was it just a feeling?
A vision of seeing yourself live there?
Something specific?
Did it bring back certain memories?

Re: How did you know your home was "THE ONE?"

I had a feeling when we walked in.
The history of the house also spoke to me....I liked that we would only be the second family living in the house...and that the first family had grown up, and now it was our turn. It wasn't the house of my dreams....but I knew it was the perfect house for us.
And it was a really good price for an area we never thought we could afford!

The location, the layout, the fact that it was in terrible shape and therefore the possibility of getting it at a low price and then making it our own appealed to us.

the layout, the location, the condition, all gave us the feeling that it was "right"

kinda like when I put on my wedding dress Chat Icon I just knew

with the house, we just got that kind of a feeling

I have to say we were trying to buy another house but the home insepction came back really bad. That house, had a good feeling but we never had this feeling that we got with this one. I knew this one was it for sure.Chat Icon

likewise, we only wanted a specific neighborhood of 800 homes so as soon as we walked in & saw how destroyed this house was and its potential we knew. we made our offer about 2 minutes after walking in. we knew it would be a great investment even if we didn't want to live here long term. The size of the house & the property is large for this neighborhood & we have a beautiful lakeview.

It wasn't a feeling of home or perfection though, we were specifically looking for the worst condition we could find Chat Icon

Out of all the homes we saw, this was the only one that met our must have requirements within our price range:

-Quiet road
-Good SD and neighborhood
-4 bedrooms and all on the same level

Once we saw it, we knew that it was the right fit for us.

Same here. DH "knew"........I had no clue. Chat Icon

He DEf saw the potential that I couldn't even imagine, so I put my 100% trust in him and so glad I did. I'll be honest, it was one of the scariest, but turned out to be the best decision I ever had to make. We love our home! I can't imagine living anywhere else. Chat Icon

You will know, because it all comes together.......the neighborhood, the block, the home, property, etc. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: How did you know your home was "THE ONE?"

we saw a lot of houses that we liked and that we bid on....for me, i feel like i can see the potential in almost anything Chat Icon

the actual house we got though was different than all of the others...i saw the listing and had my dad check it out and take some photos for us ( we were looking out of state) - i wasn't crazy about the house b/c it didn't have an open kitchen but DH and i both thought it could be a possibility...and the comunity was one of our favorites and we thought we wouldn't get in b/c of the prices until we saw this short sale townhome...so we made a blind offer, the offer was accepted and the first time we actually saw the house was the day before inspection!

from the moment we pulled up to peek at it when we arrived i just knew...the gated community, the block, it was just really cute and it felt like us...we had to peek through the windows Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon and from what i could see i loved it and it just felt right...DH and i were both prepared to walk away if it wasn't - b/c we took a risk not seeing it before we made an offer but we knew we could get out of contract after the inspection...i am so glad we took the risk because i really am happy with our home, our neighborhood, everything - although the house is a huge work in progress!

i thought that like 15 houses were "the one" Chat Icon but this house is better than ALL of the houses we looked at and we are both so happy that none of the other contracts went through

Re: How did you know your home was "THE ONE?"

With my 1st home, I literally heard angels singing above it (like that "aaahhhhhhh" in the movies) when we pulled up. Soon found out they were devilsChat Icon As bad of condition as it was in, it was everything I wanted in a home. The layout, the design, etc. It was a total structural nightmare that took $150,000 and a year of our lives to completely rebuild from the ground up. Everything that went into that house, we decided on together. My family's blood was in that house, as my Dad/Mom/Brother's helped build it to what it was. That "should" have been my forever home, but...Chat Icon I still feel resentful when I have to see it (when I park in front of his place).

My second home, I had no expectations of when looking for it, other than I didn't want the year of heartache of rebuilding a structural nightmare. I wanted to move my crap in and call it a day. My husband loved the layout; I could take it or leave it. It's a beautiful home for what it is. Stone Fireplace, vaulted ceilings, big yard, full size basement, huge master bedroom/large bedrooms. Still, I miss my den, my spare bedroom, my formal dining room, my two car garage, my pool.

I could still take it or leave it. The "WOW" factor of owning a home has worn thin and all things material can come and go like the wind. Having to downsize (and lose) a large portion of my life has changed my perspective on "things".

It just felt comfortable to us right away.....we could picture ourselves there.

It isn't my dream house but I could picture raising my kids there so it was enough for me.

Plus....I really wanted 4 bedrooms together (not a cape with 2 up, 2 down) and it was really hard to find in our price range.

Re: How did you know your home was "THE ONE?"

It was just a feeling plus it had everything we were looking for - great curb appeal, garage, attic, basement, 3 bedrooms, hardwood floors, a dining room, and a fireplace. It was one of the only homes we saw that really had it all and where we didn't have to make any compromises. And, the street has a nice name Chat Icon

I also had "the feeling" when I saw what became our 1st apartment in NYC. I could just see ourselves living there. I'm a believer in the whole - you'll know when you see it.

Re: How did you know your home was "THE ONE?"

We knew what town we wanted to live in and started looking at all available listings in our price range. We walked in a few and I was like.. "Okay.." but nothing fit.

When we saw this house I just felt like it clicked. I did picture myself living there.. the boys in the backyard and myself at the kitchen sink. I envisioned all the things I could and wanted to do with the space. Things that I thought would be dealbreakers were nothing to me. I had this urge. And the biggest thing was the butterfly. There is a long story relevant to butterflies and my mom.. but suffice it to say that each time I see one I think of her. I was buying the house in part due to monies left to us by my mother who had died a few months prior. When we were walking in off of the back deck I saw a tremendous butterfly. This sealed it for me. I just felt like the home was approved by mom.

Re: How did you know your home was "THE ONE?"

#1 was the town and location -- We wanted to be near both our families and where we grew up. Vin grew up one town over, I grew up where we bought, and now his parents live here along with mine so it works. That was paramount - the SD eventually for our kids, the area we are used to, etc. We thought we would have to get a place that needed a lot of work. We were surprised when we got lucky that it didn't.

When we saw the place we got (we just went into full contract) I knew it would be a wonderful place for us and perfect for us but I never thought we would be able to get it. It was just a bit out of our budget and the seller would have to come down in order for us to afford it. The place is pristine so I figured, since she had JUST put it on the market, why would she settle for anything less than asking price? Especially when the asking price was perfect for that place - she priced it to sell. Turns out, we got really lucky - she just wanted something quick and easy so she countered and we were able to come up a little and she accepted. It just worked out.

I did have a good feeling about it - but everytime I felt good, I would get nervous that I was being overly confident and getting my hopes up. And there was no doubt it was the best unit out of all of the ones we had seen - I mean, it was so beautiful it took my breath away - it is not something we ever in a million years thought we would get. The only reason we did was because the seller came down and because the unit was priced low to begin with because she a. priced it to sell for this market and b. because the market fell to begin with -- years ago our house would have been A LOT more money - no way whatsoever we'd be able to afford it.

There's definitely a gut feeling that goes along with it - you picture yourself there. It just feels right. SO excited!!! But, at the time, I FORCED myself not to get emotional - it is SO freaking hard though! Chat Icon

Re: How did you know your home was "THE ONE?"

Just knew it when we saw it.

But here we are years later, the house no longer works for us. So that vision can change in time, as your needs change or you learn more about the home from living in it.

Re: How did you know your home was "THE ONE?"

Well, the house we picked wasn't exactly what I had in mind as "The one", there were actually two other houses that really were almost exactly what we wanted. But after the warm, fuzzy feelings over the houses wore off, we realized some negatives. One was a block away from a sewage treatment facility which I found out doing a little research. Sorry, didn't want to live that close to one. The other was a great house, but we had to admit, the bedrooms were teeny.

The house we chose has its minuses, but in time we felt we could correct them and make it our dream house (or pretty darn close), and we love the neighborhood and the town. So it was never an "ah, ha, this is it!", feeling, but a slow realization that "hey this could really work for us".

We wanted that neighborhood & I saw the potential. After looking at over 50 houses it just felt right.
