Anyone a practicing Catholic??

I am going to my dr next week to start looking into problems since we have been unsuccessful at TTC......it got me thinking about what we would do next if there are problems.

I attempt to be a devot Catholic and I know some infertility treatments are not accepted by the Church...i know im jumping the gun but if we are faced with the choice ...im not sure what i would do...

Is there anyone else that would refrain from certain treatments because of religious reasons?? Just curious if theres anyone out there facing this dilema....i found this website that mentions NaProTechnology - guess i might look into that if the time comes

I am a practicing Catholic too. When I went to the gyno to talk about TTC'ing and where we go from here, she talked about the different methods. I do have an issue personally with this. (I hope no one takes offense by this, I don't judge anyone that takes alternate methods, it's just not for me). I am against any "unnatural" methods for religious purposes at this point but I really don't know what I will do should I be in this position. Sorry I am no help.

Hmm, just looked at this site. According to it, a SA is against Catholic teaching - never even thought of that as being "wrong."

I am Catholic and I was thinking about this the other night.
To be honest, I didn't know that some treatments were not accepted (now I feel bad)
I was kind of wondering if I can't conceive on my own if God meant for me to adopt and that he doesn't want for me to use fertility methods.
I really am not sure. What if you pray about it and see what happens?
Sorry I am not of any help - I hope you can find the answer that you are looking for

I'm a practicing Catholic and I would and will do whatever it takes to get pregnant. I don't believe that if I don't get pregnant naturally that it is somehow not in God's plan or His will. Just like I don't think it's His will for people who are able to have children naturally to have them and then abuse/neglect/abort them.

Infertility is a disease. If I had cancer I would not hesitate in treating it so I could live and fulfill all that I want to in my life. Why should I not treat infertility in othe same way? JMHO of course!

from this website it seems like they are only agasint anything that requires a man masturbating.

Reproductive Technologies in Disagreement with Catholic Teachings: Obtaining a semen sample by means of masturbation. Artificial insemination using sperm from a donor (AID) or even the husband (AIH) if obtained by masturbation

I am Catholic.........probably far from devout and practicing however, regardless of that there is NOTHING I wouldn't do to get pregnant. It's not my choice to have fertility problems and I am certainly would not be remotely okay with living my child free because it wasn't "meant to be". I agree with Christina, if you were sick with cancer or even diabetes or high blood pressure you would treat it medically so you can live a long healthy life. Infertility is no different, it's a medical problem that can be treated so hopefully a couple can have a happy and fulfilling life as a family.

Being a mom these past 16 months has been the most INCREDIBLE experience of my life and I wouldn't have this amazing, beautiful, wonderful, little girl in my life if it weren't for modern medicine. I would do the same treatment all over again and I will do it 100 more times if it means more children.

I'm catholic and ITA with MrsDevito. Infertility can be a symptom of a greater medical problem for a woman or a man. I'd explore every avenue to figure out what that issue is.

Thanks for your reply - it actually helps knowing there is someone out there that has issues with some treatment methods too.

Hopefully i can just get a BFP this month and not have to worry about it.

I dont think the Church is saying if you dont get pregnant naturally its not Gods will - its just that certain methods go against what the Church teaches and stands for.

And treating infertility is ok as long as its within the guidelines.

Just wanted to see if there was anyone out there that would abstain from certain treatments because they follow the teachings of the Church.

Its against any type of conception that would be outside the womans body. But yes they are against male masturbation of any kind because its considered a prevention of what could be a possible conception.

It does get kinds technical which is why i had to look it upChat Icon

I am a Catholic and consider myself to be both religious and spiritual. That being said, I believe that every woman has a right to pursue having her own biological child whatever the means may be. I can't imagine that God wants those plagued by infertility to just give up on having a child. There is a long history of infertlity in the bible. I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but this one really got to me. Look into reading Hannah's Hope.

The original post was written because i was looking for others that were following the beliefs of the Church. I was hoping to have responses from those people. I am interested in speaking with others that share these beliefs

I am not interested in debating anyone as to what the Church believes, nor judging anyone that lives their lives against those beliefs.

I am a practicing Catholic and can very much appreciate and understand where you are coming from. I am currently going through some IF treatments (Clomid + IUI) and I really did not realize those were against the Church. Chat Icon

I have always struggled with the idea of IVF for myself, because FOR ME, I feel like something is "off" about it. I just hope and pray and pray and pray that my situation never gets that far.

My friend recently sent me some info on the procedure you mentioned in the OP. There is a center at St. Vincent's in Manhattan that deals with it. Here is a link with some info: Gianna Center .

Best of luck to you, and feel free to FM me anytime! Chat Icon

I apologize that I wrote that going through alternate methods was "unnatural." That is what it was called when I learned about different methods through the church. Like BabyFever10 said, it was meant to mean non-intercourse.
Everyone is entitled to their own set of beliefs, some view the Church beliefs more liberally while some take it more conservatively. Clearly, many of us on the board have varying opinions (religious or not) on this issue but it's not necessary to start arguing about it. We all want the same thing here.

Re: Anyone a practicing Catholic??

I have an aunt and uncle who TTC and were unable to through b-ding. They chose not to pursue it further and do not have any children of their own. My aunt has told me that they felt that if they couldn't get pregnant then it wasn't in God's plans for them.

They are amazing people and would have been wonderful parents (they are like my second parents) I don't know if their decision had anything to do with the church's stand on fertility treatments or just their belief in God's plan for them.

I don't know what I would do if it came to that point for us. I haven't looked in to the specifics of the church's position. I guess if it came to that I would need to read up on it, pray and hope I am to realize what God would want me to do (which, IMO, isn't always the same as what the church says you should do)

Re: Anyone a practicing Catholic??

There are methods that are approved by the church.

I feel like I can't answer this question because I DID get pregnant so I don't know what I would do if I couldn't. I also engaged in premarital sex so, it would be hypocritical for me to say that I ALWAYS follow the churches teachings.

Anyway, I think you should talk to your priest about any options that ARE available to Catholics ( I know there ARE a few ).

I will say a prayer to St Gerard for all of you girls! Chat Icon

I know how difficult this is because AFTER I got pregnant, they are making me take all of these tests and there is all this talk about "my options if the results are abnormal." I wanted to decline the testing like the ultrascreen but my brother convinced me to get it done just in case it allows them to find something that they can fix. I honestly feel terrible even GETTING the testing and my DH agrees but I feel like I was almost given no option just told where and when to show up. . .

Thank you so much for responding and for the link. Ive actually never even heard of NaProTechnology before yesterday so i appreciate any additional information. And like you, I didnt stop to think that IUI would be an issue until i looked into and and realized why (the clomid is ok - theres no issue with fertility drugs that im aware of)

Thanks again and good luck to you!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
