We are getting bids for a big job on our house.
First bid: "kinda sorta" family friend, comes in at 89k
Second bid: known as "high end and expensive" and comes highly recommended from a few different people comes in at 75K
"kinda sorta" family friend says price is negotiable and open for discussion, however IMO he would need to beat the "high end" contractor in order for me to consider, and if he does, what would that say about the original price? Meaning, if we never got a second bid, would he have still charged us the 89k?
We interviewed other contractors so it is only between these two.

Re: WWYD
does the Family Friend do good work and reliable? If yes, then I would show him the other quote and ask him to match it. You always want someone you can really trust in your home. GL!

Re: WWYD
Are they apples to apples? Definietly get into the specifics when you are doing a big job... there are alot of hidden costs that you dont realize, these could surface later with the cheaper guy. I would get one more quote.

I agree with this.
That's a good excuse not to use him after all.

Re: WWYD
I agree with the "apples to apples" ? by the PP. Some contractors are known to come in low on a quote and then things "happen" and they need to add on. I would get a few more quotes, and take the best quote to the person you want most in your home.

Exactly. With our huge project, the contractor we chose was one of the more expensive ones, but he itemized absolutely every little detail, even the number of plywood sheets. His number was right on target. The other contractors never even mentioned some of the details that were in my contractor's quote, so I know they would have been an "oh, by the way...." addition to the "low" bids, and the "low" bids would have been even more than the "high" bid that I went with.

We used my friend's husband's company to renovate our 2 bathrooms and I can tell you that I will never hire a friend again! I say go with the second, less expensive person.
