Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
Well we found out the hard way that our kitchen sink needs to be replaced. We currently have a double sink, my question is should I replace it with a single or another double.
What are the pros and cons of either one. Thanks

IMO I have a double and HATE IT!
It looks nice, but OMG is it annoying when you have to wish big platters or pans. Water gets everywhere!

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
If your budget allows I would get one oversized sink a bit wider and deeper than most.
I have one and wouldn't trade it for anything else.
I even bathed my kids in it until they were 13 months old

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
I would get one large sink. I have a doube sink and find it very annoying. Like the PP said, it does not fit larger items very well causing a mess.

My parents have the double sink and I hate it, esp when you have to wash big things.

I could not agree MORE! We have a double and i hate it. If it wasnt undermounted under granite, I would have already replaced it. There just isnt enough room to properly wash large dishes, pots, pans etc.
GO FOR A LARGE SINGLE!

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
When we did a kitchen I chose a very large sink, I never had a double but i knew that with the 2 smaller sides what is really going to fit?
I would never ever want a double sink, I can fit so much stuff and there is NEVER a mess like the PP said. Everything stays nicely in the sink

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
I will say THE ONLY positive thing with a double is washing fruits or veggies or straining pasta on one side and the dirty dishes being on the other. That helps when you are cooking for a large party.

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
we have had a double in apartment and now our kitchen. We love it because one is for draining and drying our dishes (no dishwasher) but in the age of dishwashers I would get one big deep oversized sink (farmhouse) that is what we plan on doing when we redo the kitchen.

We have a double sink and I hate it. I always had a single growing up, but we got this one for free, so I didn't want to spend the extra money when we were redoing the kitchen, but I totally regret it. You can't fit anything in it.

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
we have a double sink now and the only good thing abt it is that we use one of the sinks for our drying rack since we do not have a dishwasher. i can't wait to re-do our kitchen and get a dishwasher and a single large sink.
the double does not work if you cook a lot and use large pans (roasting, baking, or otherwise) and need to soak them.

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
we have an oversized single and at first I was going to replace it- but I absolutely love it- it fits a lot of stuff like everyone mentioned and its just so much easier to maneuver everything in there

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
Instead of a double sink, I would buy a single sink that is DEEP. It will avoid you from spilling/splashing water on yourself/counter. You can wash a child/small dog in it without making a mess, etc.

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
Single Sink: Pros - lets you soak large pans and easily wash larger items including soaking broiler pans, roasting pans, etc.
Cons - if you fill it with soapy water you quickly dilute the soap and overfill the sink if you try to wash and rinse as you try to wash and rinse in the same basin. You also have no where to rinse food residue other than into the soapy water. You need to rinse first, then add soapy water and wash. If you're the "soap up the sponge, scrub and rinse, and to heck with filling the sink" type of person this is not so much of an issue.
Double Sink: Pros - lets you have one side for soapy wash water and one side for rinsing. Cons - sinks are generall smaller
One option I've seen lately is a double sink where the middle divider only comes up half way. That let you have one side for soap and one for rinsing, but you can fill higher for soaking fry pans and larger items. They also make sinks that are larger on one side with a small areas for a garbage disposal that works for pre-rinse of food residue.
I grew up with two sinks and prefer it, but we had a large kitchen with two very large sinks so size wasn't an issue. I'd choose one large over two small if those were the only options.

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
I have a double BUT one side is like the size of a single and the other is small. I feel like it is the best of both worlds.
Like this, but cast iron

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
I say Single, but it also depends how and how much you cook. I cook a LOT, broiler pans, big pots, frying pans, etc. My sink fills up quick and it would drive me bananas trying to wash in a small basin.
However, if you don't cook a lot, I would think the double would be very convenient for washing veggies, fruits, etc.
Just depends what you're looking for. :o)

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
in my last house, we replaced the sink with a double, but it was deep and i had no issues with washing my deepest pots, because i had a "high" faucet. if you can do that, you'd have no problem with a double. i had a real deep sink, i think. my mom has a single (fancy one) but, i think i liked havin my double (deepish) better. jmo.
good luck. i hope it works out for you. let us know how you choose to go, and how you like it.

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
get another double... i miss mine so much.
One side for dirty and the other to use. I hate how I get water all over if there are dirty dishes in the sink.

Re: Single sink Vs. Double sink (Kitchen)
I had double corner sinks in my apartment and DESPISED them. I thought they were cool at first, til I used a pan and realized it didn't fit.
I now have a HUGE single sink, its farmhouse sized but its in the countertop and SS, and I wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING. I LOVE IT!
