how wrong and dumb were these comments or am I overriacting?

First thing let me say that I got a job!!!! soo excited

Now to the topic of my post, I live in apartment complex and one of my good friends is my neighbor.. She have a 3 yr old. I am Hispanic, they are white.Two days ago we where talking in the parking lot and she is cleaning her car and I went to my apartment with her little boy so I can take out my dog (he love Rocco) to do his business. When I am walking back to her car she is talking to one of the maintenance guys (He know who I am and what apartment I live) and he said "Oh you hired a nanny" referring to me. I told him that just bc I am brown doesn't mean I am the nanny.... and his responds "you are not that brown, if you were darker I would ask you to flip you lips so I can see your color"

now should I report him to the complex manager

I think you may have started a teasing spar with saying 'just because you are brown...' His next comment wasn't nice but is it worth reporting him? I don't know... maybe the Chrristmas spirit is trying to break out of me or something.

Persoanlly I would not report him. He was TOTALLY WRONG tos ay that to you and I may have said someting to him at the time but now its over and done. You dont know what consequences he would face if you reported it. Woudl he lose his job? I thiik that is extreme consequence for what he did but who knows.

thanks ladies, I dont want him to get fired but I dont want him to think that its an appropriate comment to say specially to one of the residents.
SHould I approach him and say something just to him or just let it go and if it happen again I talk to the manager?

report him to the manager. let them know that you don't think it was an appropriate comment to be made at all, let alone to one of the residents. my guess is that this would lead to a verbal warning, not a firing, unless he has a history of mouthing off like this to others, in which case, he should be fired.

Congrat on your new job!! I would report him immediately! Darn ignorant...what a moron. Whatever consequences he may face that is his problem. He cannot walk around making ignorant comments like that.

but if he does get fired is it right bc of ONE comment to get fired and turn his whole world upside diown He made a rude, ignorant comment, you were po and that was that, your life goes on. if he loses his job it turns his world upside down. I am sorry I feel strongly abotu this bc I have family memeber who makes it a hiobit of correcting behavioer of other in situations liek this and has caused many scenes over the years

That was beyond rude! I would have just said how igornant that was and moved on (I would have been tempted to curse him out, but you had a child with you). I wouldn't report it.

I would report it....and i'm not the type to report things...

If he gets fired, that is his own fault. You are not blowing this out of proportion or making a big deal out of nothing. As a staff member, he should have acted more professional.

I wouldn't report it. This was between you and him. If you didn't have a retort, then I would just mentally have one ready for the next time.

And tell everyone else in the complex what an arse he is. That is worse than reporting him.

As a manager, I would want to know if my employee disrespected someone and I would handle it as I saw fit- if it was the first time that he did this, he probably will get a warning

No one but his manager will have any idea if he has done this multiple times. And if its happened multiple times, it needs to be dealt with immediately

I say report it and just tell his manager that you are not looking for him to get fired, you just thought they should be aware.
