Hydranga Question?

Can I cut in down now that it is dead? I always leave it each year because I am afraid of wrecking it. But I hate looking at it.

Re: Hydranga Question?

I wouldn't. The best time to prune it would have been September, before it set next season's flower buds.

What you could do is reach in and rock the dead-looking stems back and forth. If they're loose, try to pull them straight up gently.

Other than that, I'd be worried about causing problems for yourself next year. Even the stems that look like they're dead can produce new growth and flowers.

I have three and prune one at the end of every summer because it's a monster.

Re: Hydranga Question?

If you prune it now you won't have any flowers next year. The flowers grow on the previous year stems.

I always cut mine all the way down whenever I can remember (I haven't yet this year Chat Icon ) and they've always bloomed every year (and get ridiculously huge) so what do I know!

Same here, LOL! Actually, I cut mine last weekend. With the way the weather has changed, remaining warmer long after the season maybe that has something to do with them coming back every year even though I cut later than they should be.

Re: Hydranga Question?

I tend to baby my stuff and shape them so maybe I'm just being overly cautious. But I know that if you cut the stems to the ground, you're cutting the flowerbuds off. You can see them - the little nodes on the stems right now.

If you leave a couple of feet, and they have buds on them, you'll probably get flowers. I just wouldn't stress it this time of year with the danger of frost, but if you're a gambler, go and do it and see what happens. Chat Icon

Re: Hydranga Question?

There are different kinds of hydrangea, I forget the names right now but you can google it...I have one that blooms on new wood every year so I can cut it down as much as I want and it always blooms great, and the other two I have I can only cut down at the end of the summer since they bloom on old wood.

This is what I was told, so I cut mine to just slightly above where you can see the little green nodes, never all the way to the ground.
