Why? Is there peace? Are we giving Nobel peace prizes for 9 months worth of efforts now? What about people who have strived their whole lives and careers for peace. Really? 9 months in with absolutely no results warrants a Nobel Peace Prize?

To be honest, I am quite disappointed in this choice. I agree, its premature and to me reaks of political pandering. It really diminshes the significance and honor of that prize to me.

While I agree that the Nobel Peace Prize seems premature.. it makes sense that they are awarding it based on the changes in the climate due to his election. It is almost as though they are giving it to him in good faith.

So - good for him. I hope he earns this award with continued action.

My thoughts exactly. Also, it was not even 9 mos. The article said that the deadline for the decision was FEBRUARY 1ST! That would make it a whopping 2 weeks worth of effort.

Yep, the US President is such a powerful position. For a US president to speak as he does about nuclear disarmament and peaceful relations with the middle east gives a lot of hope for peace. Yes others strive for peace, but don't have as much power as the US president does.

ITA...if this was next year, I would be fine, but being nominated two weeks into office when he really didn't even have time to do much is a bit premature. In my opinion, he only started his foreign diplomacy efforts in the past few weeks (months.) The economic situation dominated his first few weeks (months). But, congratulations to him. Who knows, maybe this will help the US out.

I agree. Although I have no idea who they are, I'm sure there are MUCH worthier people who have been fighting for peace in Darfur, the Middle East, etc. and who have been fighting for quite some time.

Giving this award to someone to ENCOURAGE their efforts is a little ridiculous. It's like giving someone the prize in literature because they've decided to take up writing.

Re: Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

first I want to say that I am also shocked that Obama would win this, at least right now...but I guess their reasoning is more to what Jeannie was saying.

as to the question of "is there peace"? well, quite frankly, no, there is not peace. if we were waiting for "peace" to give out this award, we certainly wouldn't be giving one out every year Chat Icon

how many of these people would you call "successful" in their efforts for peace? the FIGHT is what the prize has really always lauded...someone(s) that were able to change minds and thoughts...to spur on the desire to change things. I think in that context, Obama is not such a terrible choice.

I still think that for HIM, the man, it's not a great TIME to receive this award, as he is already being touted as too much hype.

but if even his HYPE can help this crazy world...sing his praises until the cows come home, hell freezes over...and there is Peace on Earth. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think it is way too early - he was only in office for 2 weeks - too early to do anything. Even the White House is shocked.

IMO this cheapens the award. I am sorry but I don't think it should be awarded for "good intentions"

but, they ALL are awarded for good intentions.

look at the 1994 winners....is there peace between Israel and Palenstine?

look at 2007 winners....have we stopped climate change.

like I said, I agree that this isnt' the right time for him to win...but it's not really that far fetched.

people are using the date of his Inauguration...but if you really thought about it, he created a buzz and a stir throughout the entire WORLD long before he was elected our president.

his campaign stumps often addressed world and peace issues as part of his plan.

now, AGAIN I would say that there are others who could also easily be awarded this great honor (Bono, Benazir Bhutto- posthumously Chat Icon) but we shouldn't demand different ideals or results from the winner just b/c we think it's "too soon" or he hasn't accomplished world peace. that isn't really fair, either.

Re: Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses."

I guess it depends on people's interpretation of what the term "shall have done".

I agree with all the other posters regarding it being premature. I think that they're awarding it to him only because he has changed the tone of US foreign policy in the past few months.

Really, it seems more like a rejection of the previous administration's foreign policy rather than for Obama. Honestly, its so early, what else could it be for ??
