Tiles - Clueless
We need new tiles for our entryway (we have a split). I don't know the first thing about tiles - what kind would go there - ceramic, porcelain? What can you recommend?
Its either tile or wood, I'm leaning towards wood/bamboo.

You can get any type of tile you like. We have a split too and have wood flooring in our entryway. I would go with the wood...JMO.

Re: Tiles - Clueless
I just went through this and after much research I decided to go with procelain. It's the strongest and most durable tile you can get. I didn't want wood because I have wood in the rest of the house. I thought about doing travertine or slate, but even though they're commonly used in foyers, they're actually not a good choice because they are so porous and prone to staining. I put marble in the bathroom and decided one high-maintenance floor is about all I can handle.
The foyer floor was actually installed today and I can't wait to go see it!
Good luck, whatever you decide.

Keep in mind that you (and anyone coming to the house) will often have wet shoes when they first come in. You want something with texture so they won't slip and slide (save that for the backyard....).
DW used to deliver mail to a tile shop. Of course, they wanted to showcase their material on their own floors. They had the shiniest, slipperiest tile imaginable right by the door. It was always a challenge walking in there when it was wet outside....
