Did you take your parents to see the house...

before you closed or after?

We still havent told our parents that we've found a new house. I NEVER keep anything from my mom lol and its killing me that I cant talk to her about our plans. But DH doesnt want to jinx it and wants to tell everyone after we're under contract.

Re: Did you take your parents to see the house...

We took everyone to the inspection. We are very open with our families and I couldn't imagine not telling them. Plus, my father in law is very knowledgable and we wanted his opinion.

Re: Did you take your parents to see the house...

YES! Actually the first time I went out I was with my mom, DH couldn't make it and I didn't want to cancel on the RE...thank God because we would have missed this house.

When we were really serious about this house we brought back both sets of parents to go over the house and look at it subjectively. Helped alot.

We took DH's parents AFTER we made our offer. They were the ones who told us we totally did the right thing and made us a LOT less anxious. Chat Icon

my parents only saw pics of it (we sent them the link to MLSLI) after we had an accepted offer.

they won't see it in person until we close.

We brought both sets of parents to see the house before we made an offer. We knew we liked it, but we wanted other people's opinions before we made such a HUGE decision.

My dad didn't see my house until it was completely redone... 4 months after we closed.

FIL saw the house the second time I viewed it. I brought him because it needed a lot of work, he's in the business of home improvement, and I wanted him to see what needed to be done so he could crunch the numbers and I could make an offer that reflected the cost of the work.

We kept our parents involved through the entire process. It was such an exciting time, I couldn't imagine leaving them in the dark about it all.

We took them to see it after our offer was accepted.

Re: Did you take your parents to see the house...

My mother and I used to look at houses together because DH worked late in the city. I would take pictures and we would go back together if we liked it.

Dad came to my first inspection, that house didn't work out. Mom and Dad came to my second inspection too.

DH and I wanted them to be part of the process. I don't believe in jinxing things and we tried to be very realistic about not calling it "our house" and expecting everything to go right until we closed.

Re: Did you take your parents to see the house...

One of the real estate agents who ran an open house for us was telling us that he hates when people bring their parents along, because that always ruins the deal. Especially mothers.

For the house we are in now, we brought FIL with us to the inspection because he is an electrician and he knew more than the inspector. We will probably do the same for the second house.

Re: Did you take your parents to see the house...

we brought my dad and MIL to the inspection. MIL loved the house, my dad... not so much. he kept pointing out all the work that needed to be done... especially the heating system.
so, we left the inspection like "UGH! what now?"

we bought the house and we did all the work. now my dad says "you have a really nice house!" when we were selling and telling us to stick to our guns price-wise...

ALso, while selling, parents were always deal killers!! parents would come back and point out all the stupid little things that were wrong ... be prepared for that.

Re: Did you take your parents to see the house...

we brought DH's parents and brother with us to houses we were the most interested in. FIL is a carpenter so we really wanted his opinion on what kind of work would realistically would need to be done on the house. BIL lives in the same area, so we wanted his opinion on both the work we would need to do and how the different sections of the neighborhood were.

my dad never came, but we sent him pics. he's never owned a home, so any house was spectacular to him. he even thought our house was move in ready minus one wall and the carpeting.

Re: Did you take your parents to see the house...

Our parents all live out of state from where we are (we are in the DC area). We showed them the listing before we put the offer in, but didn't tell them we put an offer in on the house until we were in contract. We were SO nervous and suddenly superstitious about it that we were afraid of jinxing the deal!

They won't be able to visit until after we close, so we have a little bit of time to fix it up for them and for us! Chat Icon

Re: Did you take your parents to see the house...

Yes, my mom came to the open house with me so she saw before DH. My Dad saw it beforehand and DH's father was around for the inspection - I'm not sure if his mom saw it before we closed.

my dad came to the inspection and I'm sure my mom drove by a dozen times on her own.

didn't see any reason not to tell anyone.
