what to do about these mosquitos???

OMG i can't even sit in my backyard!! i have asian tiger mosquitoes EVERYWHERE!! my legs are bitten like crazy. it was bad last year, but this year with all the rain it's even worse.

i don't even bother going out at night when the regular blood suckers are out there but i want to be able to watch my son in his baby pool without swatting us both left and right to get the mosquitoes off.

what do you do at your house to help the problem? spray? citronella? (never works for me) other ideas???

this is the asian tiger mosquito. unlike other mosquitoes, they come out during the day!! Chat Icon

I got an herbal repellant spray at Hicks - you attach it to the garden hose and spray the lawn. It's non-toxic for humans and pets.

Problem is -- the lawn needs to be dry and stay dry for at least 6 hours after spraying. With all this rain, we haven't had the chance to try it!!

If anyone finds the answer, I'd also love to know because it's horrendous by us. It's always worse because we're by the water, but this year it's nuts. Poor Ava got bit on the side of the nose yesterday and half her face is a swollen mosquito bite nowChat Icon I can't even garden anymore because I get attacked.

I know it's so bad! They are all over my yard. We just bought this organic cedar stuff for the lawn that is safe for children and dogs so I am hoping it helps some. I can't go back there at night, you get eaten alive.

Re: what to do about these mosquitos???

i want to know why the stupd counties haven't sprayed? they spray every year for west nile. what? nobody got diagnosed with it yet so they don't spray??

i am not a fan of the spraying AT ALL, but everyone is right, this is ridiculous.

i don't know "types" of mosquitos, but i can tell you by the size of our bites, these suckers have to be HUGE! my two girls got bit on their backs, they look like the size of a quarter, puffed up and red. it looks awful!

The best thing you can do is really check your property for standing water, blocked gutters, garbage cans & lids, empty flower pots, birds baths are all great breeding grounds for these like bloodsuckers. Unfortunately with all of this rain there is water everywhere including backed up storm drains & probably in neighbors yards.

The next strategy is to create an ecology system that eliminates mosquitos. Frogs, birds, bats, dragonflies & some other bugs all eat mosquitos by the ton. If you can encourage these creatures to live in your yard your pest population will decrease. The big problem with LI is most natural areas have been so disturbed by humans the pest bugs are taking over.
I live across the street from a freshwater lake & we have very few mosquitos because there are so many predators to eat them.

unfortunately i live in SW nassau very close to queens. we have tiny lots and no place for wildlife unless you consider the random squirrel wildlife Chat Icon

since there are so many neighbors, it would be impossible to check their properties. we've checked and sprayed ours but that's all we can do.

thanks for the suggestions thoughChat Icon

We had a company spray 2x and we still see no difference. The bug situation is out of control.

I can't stay out much b/c of this!

Is it like this in other states or places? I too am not even by the water or in an area with much if any freestanding water.

i will check this out, thanks!

BTW...i called the mosquito hotline for town of hempstead and a worker came by today! Chat Icon i took him around but he didn't find anything. he was going to check the neighborhood for standing water which he would treat. i was so happy by the quick response time (2 days!). so even if it doesn't help, at least they know about our problem and checked for all they could.

We bought a bug zapper this year and we spray our yard with a product by Cutter that you attach the hose to. It really works well except you need to do it every 4-6 weeks.

They also have citrinella plants that you could put in planters around your property.

Re: what to do about these mosquitos???

I have no idea if it works, but Off is making a clip-on mosquito repellant that you can clip on a lawn chair, your belt, etc. and it's supposed to give you a mosquito-free zone without having to spray yourself.
