I know when i give someone a gift, i would like them to be able to use it. If they can't use it, then i'd rather they return it for something they can get use out of. I wouldn't take offense if someone did that. I work hard for my money. I wouldn't want something i bought to sit in a closet not being used because its the polite thing to do.
I agree with the above. I often find myself returning clothes received as gifts because they bought the wrong size. If my child is not ever going to wear the gift, I'd rather return it and get something s/he can wear. Otherwise its a waste of money, even if its not my money.
If I can't return it, I'll pass it along or donate it, but it was gift intended for MY child, so I try to replace it with something for them.

Re: Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
i keep it all, cause i realize people spent time picking it out, and cared enough to buy ds a gift-(since not everyone did)... however I havent had anything completely ugly, some things werent as much my taste as other things the store carried but i still kept hit...
The only time i've had to return anything is when people buy the wrong size- summer rompers for fall/winter... but im hoping to find the same pattern in the right size when i bring it back.

Re: Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
I don't know if you mean this only as relates to gifts received for a new baby but we just had a party for my DD's 5th birthday. She received 2 gifts that were adorable clothes from the Children's place. It was killing me to return them but ---- for this summer alone, my DD has about 15 pairs of shorts, 10 pairs of capris, 20 dresses, 15 skirt/skorts, 35 or 40 shirts (rough estimate) so I returned them for credit. I don't think the gift giver is insulted if they knew, they enclosed a gift receipt. IMO to keep them would be overkill since DD already has tons of clothes and the only one making out in that situation is the store.

Re: Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
since I live OOS, no one knows what I do!
I will put outfit on him, with tags, take some pics, then to the store it goes.
We rarely go out out anywhere, usually playdates, park...he gets such dressy stuff.
I would be absolutely lying if I did not say that a lot of things I take back are exchanged for gifts for others.

Re: Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
I got at least 30 0-3 month outfits when DS was born. As well as a couple of new born things. He outgrew 0-3 by 2 months. I returned a lot of it and exchanged it for the same outfit in a bigger size. Some things I got store credit and used it to buy more clothes later on. I didn't pay for any clothes for almost a year! I know I didn't pay for it but someone else did. They spent their money to buy DS something he could use, not for me to pass along to someone else.

i completely agree! i don't want it sitting in the closet or only worn once--that's a waste! i'd rather they return it for something they need or want and always give a gift receipt when i can.
i returned a lot of DS's clothes at the beginning because he had so much that there was no way he could even everything once! i got store credits and then bought things he would need for later on.
he's in 12-18 month clothing now and i STILL haven't had to buy him any clothes--he's still wearing gifts from birth/christmas/easter!

I only return stuff that is the the wrong size for the season. For example, If I get a 6-9 mos outifit that is clearly summer clothes and he is only 7 weeks now.

If I don't like it I will return it. I am not going to put something on my kids that I don't like just because someone bought it for them as a gift. I am grateful for the gift, and I would rather exchange it for something I would put on them rather than wasting their money on something I will not.
Ditto
ITA also. Though most stuff I return is because it doesn't fit

Re: Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
For my shower I got TONS of clothes. A lot were the same sizes. I returned a lot and got store credit. I later purchased clothes for DC with those credits. I have spent very little money on clothing and he is 19 months old already. We are fortunate to have big families so we get an overabundance of gifts when it comes to holidays/showers etc. I did the same when DD was born. They grow so fast, I see no point in wasting money or needing 100 0-3 months outfits. Gift or not, I dont like to waste. I would hope my family/friends would do the same with a gift I purchased for them if they didnt need/like/want it.

This is not meant to cause drama, but I just never understood this. We got a ton of clothes for DS, but I only returned one outfit b/c it was absurd.
I honestly feel like I did try to put DS in something at least once, I mean, he is 2 and we still get a ton of clothes and we get wear out of them.
I guess I figure since they were a gift, *I* didn't lose any money if he didn't wear them and now they've been passed on....
this is exactly how i felt. because they were gifts i tried to have him wear everything at least once and i didn't care if they went to "waste" because they were a gift and i didn't lose any $$.
but i also knew i would be having more than one child so i assumed i would use most of the clothes over again.

Re: Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
If it is something that will fit DC I won't return it, but if it is something that will never fit them, I would rather get something that they will get use out of. For example, I got alot of clothes when my new baby was just born. She is very small and won't be able to wear alot of the stuff during the right season so I'd rather get it in a smaller size or get something that she'll be able to wear later. Even though I am not out any money, somebody cares enough for my DC to take the time to go out and shop and spend their money of them so I'd rather not waste that.

I returned, and still return anything I can that I don't like and will never put on DD. If I cannot return it, I donate. I'd rather get use out of something then it sit in her closet.

Re: Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
Both sides of the family always got Ale clothes that wouldn't fit during the right season. Like, fleece that would fit her in June or a summer dress that would fit in December...
I take these outfits back and exchange them for something in the right size, or appropriate for the season, KWIM??

I feel a little differently. If I hate it or don't like the way it fits him, or I know he won't wear it, I return it. I think it's wasteful for him to wear it once or twice. I'd rather exchange it for something he could use a lot more.
Same here.

ITA! I have a specific taste for the way I dress Jack and would rather return it then waste the gift
