Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
This is not meant to cause drama, but I just never understood this. We got a ton of clothes for DS, but I only returned one outfit b/c it was absurd.
I honestly feel like I did try to put DS in something at least once, I mean, he is 2 and we still get a ton of clothes and we get wear out of them.
I guess I figure since they were a gift, *I* didn't lose any money if he didn't wear them and now they've been passed on....

I feel a little differently. If I hate it or don't like the way it fits him, or I know he won't wear it, I return it. I think it's wasteful for him to wear it once or twice. I'd rather exchange it for something he could use a lot more.
My DS also grew SO fast the first year, he wore a lot of stuff only once or twice anyway.

I agree, we just made sure DC wore everything. When we would go somewhere I would try to have DC wear one of the outfits from whoever was there. It made people so happy. Sure we didn't need everything - not even close - but I would do it this way again. But different strokes...

I didn't give birth yet and we're team green, but some of the stuff we've gotten looks more girl like...if its a boy I'm not going to return it, I'll just pass it on to someone else I know who has a baby girl etc
I don't know, maybe its be just being lazy or whatever, but if I didn't buy it, I don't bother exchanging/returning it...or trying to...for clothes that is

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it at all, just that I don't really see why.
I actually can understand maybe returning clothes at BRU or Target so you could buy diapers, but at a store that just sells clothes, wouldn't you just get more clothes? KWIM?

Re: Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
When my DS was an infant, I had to return/exchange some things that I received after he was born because they were too small (he was already past the size when I got the gift). (He was such a chub that he was already in a 3-6 month size at 8 wks and in a 9 month size at 3 months.)
I also have a bunch of stuff in my storage bin because he never wore it. It was the wrong season when he was that size. It was the hotest part of the summer and the clothing was really for spring or fall.

Yup! But i know myself and when i like something, i like it. When i don't like something, i hate it.
If i don't like it... chances are... i wouldn't put ds in it. So to keep it just because it was a gift, well i see that as wasteful because i know myself and i know i wouldn't put him in it, KWIM?
Plus to have them wear it once would be a waste to me. Money can be tight for people. So to receive a gift from someone and waste their money... well i don't like to do that.
I know when i give someone a gift, i would like them to be able to use it. If they can't use it, then i'd rather they return it for something they can get use out of. I wouldn't take offense if someone did that. I work hard for my money. I wouldn't want something i bought to sit in a closet not being used because its the polite thing to do.
Am i making sense? i feel like i'm going round and round.

I agree with the above. I often find myself returning clothes received as gifts because they bought the wrong size. If my child is not ever going to wear the gift, I'd rather return it and get something s/he can wear. Otherwise its a waste of money, even if its not my money.
If I can't return it, I'll pass it along or donate it, but it was gift intended for MY child, so I try to replace it with something for them.

Oh I totally understand.
I guess I also feel like boy's clothes are so limited that everything looks the same anyway The one outfit that I did return was an all white sweat suit
I also think I might be afraid if someone asked me if I ever put DS in something they bought...plus I take so many pictures

Re: Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
I return gifts I don't like or I know will be out of season when he is in that size.
It annoys the cr@p out of me that my MIL shops in stores that are hard to return to.
I figure people would rather he get some use out of something rather wear it once or not at all.
After my shower I returned a ton of stuff to BRU and continue to return what I not wild about.

If I don't like it I will return it. I am not going to put something on my kids that I don't like just because someone bought it for them as a gift. I am grateful for the gift, and I would rather exchange it for something I would put on them rather than wasting their money on something I will not.

I didn't return TOO much but I had a ton of 3-6 months clothes and I think he was literally in them for 2 weeks. There just wasn't enough time to put him in all those outfits!! But I was short on 6-9 months clothes so I did exchage a few outfits for stuff in a bigger size. I still have stuff hanging in the closet with tags on though, this kid grew way too fast for me!!

I don't return much but that's more because I'm lazy and I can't stand a hassle... and most of the time, I don't know where the outfit was purchased.
The only time I've exchanged something that was bought for DD was when I was given a gift receipt, the outfit was too big and I knew it would be out of season when DD finally grew into it.

Seriously? an all white sweat suit for a boy? Maybe for a baby who doesn't move, but a 2 year old... . I can picture the mud, ketchup, grape juice, etc on it now.
Well we've never had anyone ask if we used the outfit they bought, except my aunt in which case i lied. But she lives in England so there was minimal chance of me getting caught.

I agree completely. If it was a gift to ME, I'd have no problem returning or exchanging it, why should my kids be any different? But there are some exceptions where I did feel bad, so I'd have DS wear it once, take his pic and send it to the gift giver and that was that.

Re: Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
Most clothing we received as gifts for DS we kept, and that still is the case now. I did return clothing that didn't fit or was absurd (really only one thing, and that was an outfit that was meant for a girl, he is a boy).
It makes sense to return things though--I know we didn't get so many clothes, and every piece we received helped since he wore it all. I guess I found most things he got cute in some way or other, so there were only a few we took back.

ITA! Plus, DD is a skinny little thing, so not every cut or style of clothing fits her in her given size...long dresses are always too long, pants that don't have elastic all the way around the waist (the kind that are half elastic) will never stay up (and she'll outgrow the length before they stay around her waist), etc.

That is me. I want to avoid the hassle. The only time I remember returning was when I was just annoyed at the gift. It was a 0-3 month size when Dylan was already a lot older than that. He was small but this was clearly for the season in which he was going to be about 10 months old. I think it was a regift. We had no gift receipt and we got very little back but I was determined to return it! There are other things about this friendship and that has to do with why I wanted to return. I usually do not bother.

I usually return clothes if the season or size is off. So when Chelsea received a fleece sweatsuit that is size 12 months when she is 18 months....it went back or when she received a bathing suit that is 24 months and she won't fit in it until December that went back also

If I dont like it or the material I am returning it. I am appreciative that we received the gift but like pp's said I rather not waste their money and get something we will actually use.

I will return it if I really don't like it. Once I returned a gift that was worth $2.00....I guess it's the thought that counts, but I was pretty shocked.

Re: Spinoff of Returning clothes receieved as gifts?
When DS was born and he received clothing that was too small, or the wrong season for his size I returned it so that I could get him something he would wear. There were only two things I returned because I did not like them. One was a pink striped sweater with red pants that was clearly for a girl and I have a boy. It was adorable, but just inappropriate. The other was a black camo outfit and I did not like it so it got returned. I was really lucky insofar as he got a lot of clothing I liked. That said, I have a couple of gifts from specialty stores that were never worn and I don't know what to do with them.
