WOW! I'm so sorry but I'm glad you finally got a solution and that your DS is doing better.
Jeez! I had flashbacks to last April. My DS who was 23 months was sick in a very similar way. He had a very high fever and was sleeping nonstop. Despite a few doctor and emergency care visits, we finally ended up at the ER and where the first thing they thought was he might have had meningitis. I know that feeling of almost dying - I was beside myself. Spinal tap, cat scan, blood work, it finally turned out he had a bacterial infection in his adenoids which responded to IV antibiotics.
I totally feel for you and what your and your DS went through. I'm just glad he's doing better.
Did they send him home with Clindamycin? If so, def get a probiotic to give with it. FM me if you want since it was so similar.

So glad to hear RJ is feeling better!!!
We had not so great experiences with St Charles ER also.. they are just so slow there and to me it seemed like children weren't as big of a priority.

Well...a big puzzle piece was that DS was crying his neck hurt- so meningitis was discussed (along with measles , scarlet fever, mono and Epstein bar)
Thank God they didnt have to do a spinal tap, but the various blood work, xray and cat scan was enough for me (esp since I couldnt be in the room for the xray and cat scan and could hear him screaming through double doors and a LONG hallway "i want mommy" )
He was given one large does of zithromax on Tuesday (via IV) and a strong dose of clindamycin (via IV) on Wednesday... we were sent home on augmentin...
Today DS has had diarrhea, not constant but the 2x's he would normally have a bowl movement, it was complete water...
Im not sure if its the fact he has had SO MUCH medicine in the past 3 days OR its part of his illness OR if its the augmentin...
What exactly is a probiotic???

I was told DS was not a priority because I had gotten his fever to go down...
Well 5hrs later, and after fighting with everyone to get a temp taken it was back to 105.7...
I hated HATED HATED the ER Dr.- I wont mention his name- but feel free to FM if curious... I kept asking the nurses to send the Dr in so I could get the results of the blood work (since a nurse overheard me tell DS something about going home- and then said- "dont say that, you arent going home...you are being admitted ) I also wanted to know what they were looking for and why the ordered the other tests...
I could hear the nurses saying to him... Mrs. W.... wants to know blah blah blah... and I heard him say "yea yea yea"
Then when I asked what the hold up was they told me they couldnt get in touch with the ped. and that the answering service was picking up. DH called once- answering service answered RIGHT AWAY and had the Dr on the phone within 1 minute...So either they LIED or they tried once and put it to the back burner
OMG I could go on and on... I hated it- I would never go back!

The Clindamycin is notorious for bad diarrhea. The doctors did not tell me this but my friend who happens to be a nurse was there when they prescribed it and told me to get a probiotic. It's the equivalent of feeding him tons of yogurt to restore his good bacteria bc the antibiotics generally wipe out the bad & good bacteria. They sell it over the counter, usually you can ask the pharmacist for it. Culturelle or Flor Stor are 2 brand names. I emptied 1 capsule in a drink that I knew he would finish. I'm assuming you'd have to do the same with a 3 year old. It's worth getting. I give it to my kids anytime they are on an antibiotic now.
My DS had the same neck thing too. He couldn't even hold his head up after a day or 2. I'm glad your DS did not get the spinal tap although the horror of hearing him cry out for you is enough to kill you.
