I was in the hospital for 3 days

I kept having a low grade fever for days that eventually turned into a fever of 105 Chat Icon DH took me to the ER around midnight on Friday and after being in the ER for about 12 hours they admitted me because they couldn't figure out what was wrong. My white blood cell count was really high, NOTHING was taking down the fever and I was convulsing. They thought I had a blood infection and had the head of the infectious disease team working on me. That was terrifying because my boys are only 3 weeks old as of today. I don't even want to get into how hard it was to be away from them...my eyes are so puffy from days of crying that I look scary. As soon as I got into my own room in the hospital I noticed my boobs were really sore and red. I immediately knew they were infected. So to make a LOOOONG story short, I was ignoring and masking my low grade fever with tylenol for so long that I let myself get a bad bad bad baaaaaad case of mastasis (spelling?) I pumped every 2 hours in the hospital and was given the strongest antibiotic that they make. It was very scary though, I didn't know that mastasis could cause such a high fever like that. I feel like I did this to myself because I started slacking on the pumping at home. I was doing it every 2 hours, then I let it slide to 3 or 4....so I think I just caused myself to get engorged and then infected. Now I will be pumping religiously! The doctor told me I could still give my boys the pumped milk, but I don't feel comfortable doing that with all the antibiotics, so i've just been dumping it and they have been getting formula. I feel bad dumping it because I produce so much when I pump, but I just don't wanna give them the meds i'm taking. The formula is constipating them and they are really gassy...but hopefully as soon as the medicine is out of my system they will be right back to breastmilk.

Does anyone else have any experiences with mastasis?

I think you mean mastitis.

I did not have it but I got horribly engorged and had very bad lumps under my arms when I first started to pump/nurse. I put warm compresses under them and used heating pads. I hope you feel better

Yes, it happened to me too. But my fever only went to 102. It took me about a week to recover and then I got sick with another high fever - caused by UTI.
Feel better soon!

Re: I was in the hospital for 3 days

I had mastitis when DS was around 2 wks old - it was awful! I also didn't want to BF while on antibiotics so for the 10 days I pumped like 8-9 times a day and gave DS formula. I was SO SO nervous and cried like crazy b/c I hadn't planned on giving him bottles until 3-4 wks and was so afraid he wouldn't latch back on. Well, he went back like a champ, I never had a problem again and I EBF for quite some time and didn't stop BF until 10 mos. pp. Hang in there - the worst is almost over Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I am so sorry you went through this horrible horrible experience!

My friend up in Boston would up in the hospital with it. She was allowed home after about 4-5 days & had an antiibiotic drip or something kind of pump thing that at her house.

Her doctor told her she had to pump & dump though. This was about 7 years ago so maybe they have a different class of antibiotics now.

I'm glad you'll be ok.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
