Anyone afraid of getting old?
My grandma, who is the most fit and active woman I know, recovering from cancer, is far from a little old granny. She is sophisticated and beautiful at age 85.
*However* the thought of getting old scares me a little. I know its the unknown, but the idea of becoming frail, weak, and losing my friends and loved ones is such a sad thought to me.
Maybe I'm overly emotional because grandma was sick with cancer.... Am I the only one who thinks of things like this?

Yes... I just lost my grandmother to cancer in the fall. Seeing my grandfather alone breaks my heart.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
Yes, after losing both grandparents and seeing how "accustomed" for lack of a better word people get to losing loved ones is what scares me the most.

Yes. Obviously I know it's better than the alternative...but it still scares me.
And forget what the thought of dying does to me.

Yes, I am afraid. I could probably write a book about my fears and still not be done explaining them.
I have read that the youngest child in a family often has issues with growing old. I am the youngest and I identify myself with being young, so how can I reconcile aging with that?
On my mom's side, both grandparents were rather depressed in their old age. My dad's parents did not seem to be depressed but they were not around when I was old enough to fully understand who they were. My grandmother (mom's mother) was a product of the Great Depression. In her old age, she thought about the Depression a lot. She didn't think in terms of how far she had come but I sure hope I can.

I feel the same way ! And I am so scared of dying Me too. Practicing Buddhism helps, but its what drew me to the practice. It focuses all on dealing with dying.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
I am not afraid of dying at all. I just don't want to know what happens.
But as for getting old, I have never had an experience with anyone just getting older and passing peacefully. My experiences are all with painful cancer or Alzheimer's so I am MUCH more afraid of that.

Absolutely TERRIFIED of getting old.
Not so much afraid of dying as much as living without my loved ones.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
Yes. I never thought about it until my father started to get very sick and passed away. Now it is that much more of a reality to me how quickly it all happens and that, before I know it, I'll be old and gray and have difficulty doing everyday things. It terrifies me, but at the same time, also motivates me to REALLY appreciate the moment, enjoy my family time while my monkey is still young and cuddly, and to really take care of myself...

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
i am not afraid of getting old. i am not looking forward to the ailments that come along with it, but seeing how happy my grandparents are, especially with my DS, makes me okay with getting old.
and please don't make fun of me but the only thing that helps me with my INSANE fear of dying is my belief that there is something after this when we die... i don't necessarily believe in ghosts, or spirits, but maybe something like heaven.
i have always been a very scientific person but there is a part of me that clings to the belief that there is something bigger than us "out there" and that we do have souls... and there is someplace for those souls to go when our bodies don't work anymore.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
As someone who lost a parent young, I'm more afraid of not getting old.
My dad was 55 when he passed. I was 21 and my sister was 18. He never saw us graduate college, get married, have children, become professionals... So I just pray that I live long enough to see Jordana as an adult, settled, happy, in love and with a family. I'd be happy to grow to an old age with my faculties and my health.
Its funny, my DH assumes that he will be there to see all those things. I don't. If I do, I know its a precious gift.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
Yes. I still think of myself as 18 - I swear, I sometimes forget I am 35 and when i do wake up into the reality of my age, it makes me a little depressed. I wish I was 26 again! It is a little depressing.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
Totally. Sometimes I think about this way too much. It can't be healthy. But I can't help it.
I obsess over getting old, getting sick, getting frail, being alone.
Then the more shallow part of getting wrinkles, etc...
I could go on for days...

Yes, and this is why I try to eat well and exercise. My main motivation is that if I take care of myself, I will age better and be healthier overall.

Re: Anyone afraid of getting old?
I am not afraid of getting old. I am more afraid of something happening to DH and me losing him
In the words of Winnie the Pooh:
“If you live to be 100, I hope I live to be 100 minus 1 day, so I never have to live without you.”
