I've crossed them, my husband crossed them everyday for 3 months(he is salaried, the shop was on strike for BULLCRAP reasons) They pay 150 a month in healthcare, my hubby pays 7000 a year!! why does ours keep going up cause the union contract says theirs can't...bull!
And you know what, 1500 people are getting laid off from my husbands company and ALL of them are White collar jobs, why cause the guys doing just good enough jobs who are union are protected cannot be touched. what takes 1 guy to do, the union mandates 3. Not one UNION worker is getting laid off throughout the entire company, and they are very well known company with many many divisions from government to nasa supply.
My extended family comes from union...personally i don't think we need them anymore, we have labor laws now that weren't around when unions were formed.

In defence of unions, without unions we would still be working 18+ hours per day, working on weekends (Sunday was the 1st day allowed as a day off!!!). There would still be child labor up to 12-14 hours per day.
Unions have brought the Laws in Western Countries that allows us to work 40 hours per week, have paid vacations, etc...

While it's true that the work of unions way back when helped shape some pretty nice labor laws for the modern worker, they are completely unnecessary at this point in time.

Coming from a blue collar union family- we were raised to NEVER cross a picket line- and to be supportive when we see one. Every job I've had in my adult life has been union and I've been an active part of every contract negotiation. That includes being a part of many picket lines.

I once had a boss who had been a scab when she was a union worker. Her reputation is one of being not trustworthy and not qualified for her own job. Her situation is very specific but I'm sure there are other stories like hers. FYI, she became management but has been unable to move up from low level management.

I am not sure whether I would cross a picket line, no one ever really talked about it while I was young, but I will admit that I am fairly anti-union. I know this will not be a popular opinion here, but any unions, in my opinion, create a culture of medicosy. There is no incentive to perform better at your job, or to create a better product you are going to get what the union negotiates for you. I think a lot of industries have been really hurt by inflexible unions (take the UAW for example) and when industries hurt, eventually so do their workers, even if in the immediate term they are getting better contracts.
I totally disagree with you. I don't think these things go hand in hand at all.
My mother was teacher of year, my husband busts his a$$ as do the other people he works with. To say that b/c they are part of a Union creates a "culture of mediocracy " is quite overbroad if you ask me.

Hmmm..... affordable healthcare, a protected job. Sounds like a good reason to be a part of a union.
What may be bullcrap reasons to you are very important to others.
I was a flight attendant for 14 years. It's because of my union that we had safer work environments, more sanitary work conditions, and work hours that made for a safer flying experience for passengers. It isn't always about $$$$.
When I first became a flight attendant, I was often forced to work 2 weeks at a time with no days off, unlimited duty days, and a minimum crew rest of 8 hours between flights. Meaning, after working an 18 hour day I could have 8 hours of rest before needing to be back on the plane to work another 18 hour day. Now mind you- that 8 hours included the drive to a hotel, time spent checking in, showering, ironing my uniform for the next day. I'd usually wind up with about 5 hours of sleep at most.
And all of this was for straight time- no overtime ever. I also never got overtime for working holidays- even though every other department got time and a half for it.
Thankfully all those rules and compensation issues were changed/resolved with a hard fought contract.

I respect that you disagree, I don't expect everyone to agree with my opinion, but to clarify my point was to be broad, which is why I said it creates a culture as opposed to commenting on how particular workers may act. I'm not saying that union workers dont work hard, but if there is no incentive to create better products, do a better job, etc. it creates an environment where many people will not. US companies are falling far behind peer nations and creating inferior products and there is no denying the fact that inflexible unions have hurt the industries in which they operate.

I was not taught about unions one way or another by my parents, despite the fact that my mom was part of the union at one of her jobs. My dad was not, but his parents both were for most of their working lives. I was in one myself when I was teaching.
I would not cross a picket line unless there was no reasonable alternative for me. When the grocery store workers out here went on strike a few years ago, I bought my milk and other necessities at the gas station.

I was not really taught it... was just something I knew to not do. What a PITA when the groceries stores in CA were on strike... I had to go to this tiny, local joint (20 mins away) with high prices. I was so glad when the picketing stopped!!!

I agree with many points that have been made as does my DH, who is a 16 year union member. There are many companies such as car manufacturers and electronics who are obviously falling far behind. But union construction labor still surpasses non union by far. These are our highly trained & skilled electricians, plumbers, sheet metal workers etc. These men have the proper schooling to carry out these jobs efficiently & correctly. And well non union simply does not....
