Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

No NOT AT ALL...

In fact some of my more successful friends do not have college degrees. One actually only has his GED.

Its a piece of paper...it doens't guarantee or determine how successful a person is in their career.

I have a few friends who see things like this - that because they have their Masters; it makes them higher on the totum pole Chat Icon

I think it depends. I hear TONS of people where I work complaining about the EXTRA work that they have to do and that us in clinical or management dont have to do this and BLAH BLAH BLAH...
In these cases YES I do wonder...WTH not go for your degree. You are stating this sux and you want my position but yet there is only one way to get that position which means getting that degree. I guess what I am saying is I hate whiners!!!!!
For those that are successful without degrees...all the power to them. Its nice to work hard and get what you need/want out of life.

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

Like I often remind people, Bill Gates (the current richest man in the world) DOESN'T have a college degree.

Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple and Pixar) also DOESN'T have a college degree.

Steve Wozniak (inventor of the Apple Computer) didn't finish his college degree until 10 years after starting Apple....

So, no, I don't think college degrees are necessary.... Chat Icon Chat Icon

heck no....most people I know with out degrees make MORE money then people I know with them

exactly.
Everyone in my family has a degree including me (they are very big on college education in my family, lol) But even my mom always says "degree is a great accomplishment , but you can't let it define a person"
There are waaaay toooo many people out there who have no degrees for various reasons and they make more money or they are a lot smarter than people who do have degrees.
So my answer is , NO I would never form an opinion about someone based on whether or not they have a degree.

I also voted other. I don't think less of them, but in some cases I am very curious to know why they didn't go, as some others mentioned, especially if they are very bright.

I am usually more interested in talking to people without degrees about what they do for work, because in many cases it is very different from what I do and I usually learn something new.

Neither of my parents went to college and they were 2 of the smartest people I have known. In fact, I think my dad would have smoked me in engineering school if we were peers. Chat Icon I also had an uncle who was a NYC bus driver who did the Sunday NY Times crossword every week. It's not about if or where you go to school, it's about what you do with the gifts you have, IMO.

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

To be honest, I hate to say it, but I have thought that about several people... I will qualify that by saying that I don't mean necessarily a degree, but I tend to exepct a person to attain some sort of special training for career advancement... (technical school, certification in something, police academy....) since virtually every career requires it.

I admitedly question sometimes people who never attempted to advance their career at all, when they clearly could....

I wouldn't question it if the person were in that rare profession that doesn't require any certification or degree at all.... ex. comedian...

but even if it isn't required (my good friend is an artist), she clearly gained a lot of skills from taking classes....

I do not think less of a person at all.

I do not think that every profession needs a degree, only certain ones-such as lawyer, dotor, etc.

Like a previous poster said, ANYONE could get a degree, and that is true.

I know so many people without degrees who make GOOD money.

If anyone could get a degree, than everyone would have one.

I have a lot of respect for people who have an education and those that dont- I have two degrees and DH has three- but dh is the first in his family to have a degree- and I am one of three people in my family with a degree- my mom doesnt have one and is the smartest person I know.

Well thats not necessarily true-it takes some level of motivation-just not more intelligence(in most cases obviously.) I have learned way more on the job than I did in college.

sorry I dont understand- whats not necessarily true?

Eta- what I meant in my original post was to respond to a lot of people on this thread that said anyone can get a degree- I completely disagree- sure anyone can go to college but not everyone can or will finish- so in reading your post- I agree with you- its a motivation thing- as well as a "smarts" thing

I voted other. My first reaction is to think they didn't value a formal higher education.

There could be a number of reasons why...they could have been very successful & started a business where they were doing well. I discovered long ago that a college degree does not equate to someone being more intelligent, earning more money or having more drive.

I know plenty of people who have more drive & ambition, are more intelligent & earn more money than the people I went to college with. And you don't have to be smart to go to college or driven to go to college.

i have the same first reaction!

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

I certaintly do not judge people based on their level of education.

For the career that I choose I was required to have a college degree and masters. This was the job I wanted and therefore fulfilled the requirements.

Someone else's chosen path may not require a college degree or masters/doctorate/JD etc. and therefore they do not pursue one.

As a person who works with children/ teens in planning their future I do recommend that most of my students attend college. It gives you more options in today's day and age. Often times my students attend trade schools as well.

IMO it should be based on the person and their chosen career.

I look down on people who bash others decisions in life. Obviously your co worker feels less than and uses his degree to make up for whatever he feels he is lacking.

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

WOW, Im shocked some people would say yes they judge. I dont have a degree yet I can proudly say I know more and consider myself smarter then many people who do. There are MANY reasons I dont....all different, but I might not even share those reasons with people....

A degree doesnt mean much to me.....I'd be impressed if it were a Doctorate or double masters or somehting, but lack of one means nothing in my experience in regards to motivation, smarts etc.

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

I'll be honest.. when I was younger I judged people by how far they went in school.

When I was in high school, I judged folks by what schools they were accepted into. When I was in college I judged people by their SAT scores and their GPA's and their majors.

And when I was in my mid-late 20's I absolutely thought that anyone without a degree (or degrees) was simply not smart or driven enough to attain one.

As I got older - and grew in real intelligence and maturity - I realized that a degree was not an indication of intelligence or motivation. Some of the laziest people I know have degrees.. and some of the people I know with degrees are so lacking in basic common sense and intelligence that I have to wonder how on earth they managed to get through school!

Based on these observations, I'd say that your colleague is probably just an immature dolt. Let me guess... he lives at home with his parents, plays video games with all his free time and his girlfriend is a chick from a streaming webcam. Close?

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

Certain friends of mine (who have degrees) can't even speak or write proper English. It peeves me sometimes that a degree was even bestowed upon them. I have friends who, when they were in college, asked me to proof their papers for them before they submitted them. My mouth would hit the floor sometimes reading all of the horrible grammar! Having a degree isn't everything. Some people are not meant to go to college and get a degree.

I think those are 2 different points entirely. Not everyone who earns a degree, or multiple degrees for that matter, does it for the money. For instance, you make substantially more money as a partner at a firm than as a law professor yet it is oftentimes more difficult to be a Prof. at a good law school and thus more "prestigious" despite the fact that the compensation is lower.

Just because someone - with or without a degree - makes more money does not make me think more highly of them. I place a lot of value on knowledge. That is why I have a mild crush on HouseChat Icon
