I edited my post again because I do not want to come off as judgemental...

So, my opinion is, if you do not like the fact that every year our taxes will go up then MAYBE we shoud think about moving to a place that doesn't have high taxes. I really do not see taxes EVER getting lower. I think every year they will get higher and people need to think about this before they buy a home to avoid financial hardship. Does that make sense?

I'm in my twentys and just bought a house, my taxes are already 10k but I bought my house knowing they would go up. I want my future children to get a good education and that is why I bought in a decent school district. Yes, we are pinching pennies and my husband works 3 jobs ... but we CHOSE to buy in New York which means very high taxes!

I just read the post of budgets and people said "the teachers always throw a pity party" and all I have to say is ... 90% of the people on this board throw a pity party about EVERYTHING! Tax payers, parents, students, everyone. Thats what this is for!

I rarely post anymore but I had to post this! Pity Party is always On!

Edited to include:
Obviously I do NOT think its "easy" to pick up and move BUT at the end of the day, if living becomes unaffordable, what else can you do? My point is simple, taxes are high, they will get higher .... and there is nothing we can do. And, I think our taxes are high for a good reason. Top schools, tons of stores, activities, programs, the city, beaches, etc.

i 100% agree with you! i KNEW when i bought my house what my taxes would be and i KNEW that they would always go up. yes, the taxes on LI are crazy, but they're like that all over the island. we've talked about moving, but our families are here and everything we have is here so it's not an option.

i could rent and not pay taxes, but that's not an option either. i WANT to be a home owner and i WANT to be in a great school district, which on LI means high taxes.

ITA - you brought up a great point....we all CHOOSE where we want to live. As a homeowner, you know full well that your taxes are going to increase each year - some years more than others. When we bought our home and saw our tax increase, yeah it suc*ed, but this is what we signed up for by CHOOSING to stay on LI

Re: ** If you do not like the high taxes on Long Island ...

I think people, including myself, are more upset with how are tax money is being spent. I bought in Merrick b/c I too want my child to have a good education and to grow up in a good environment. I bought my house in 2006 and the taxes were $9,500. My taxes today, only 3 years later are slightly over $13k. If the taxes keep increasing like this in such short periods of time by the time DS actually starts school in 4 years my taxes will be almost $20k and I wont be able to afford to send him to this school district anyway. Of course I expected tax increases, but not like this.

Yes, LI has high taxes, that's not a secret. But after awhile, it gets ridiculous and something has to give. People just cannot afford to live here. Is LI turning into Beverly Hills or something? If the taxes keep increasing like this only the "rich" will be able to afford to live here. Years ago our parents could afford a home here on 1 salary, now some people can barely afford to buy a home here on 2 salaries.

There's more to it than your ignorant idea of just dealing with the high taxes.

Re: ** If you do not like the high taxes on Long Island ...

And one day I may not be able to afford to live in my home. My brother and his family moved to Charlotte, NC a few years ago. They pay 1,100 taxes for a rediculous amount of land and a huge home. Although NC is beautiful, to me, its obvious why the taxes are so much lower there... I dont want to get into it because I am NOT saying that NC is a bad place to live. Its lovely!! But, my brother and family left because they wanted a bigger house for less money. Thats the main reason...

However, if LI turns into Beverly Hills then I have to leave. Bye New York. Hello to another lovely area where I can afford to live. I will prob. be happier because I won't be complaining all the time about high taxes.

My intention was not to call you ignorant or to attack you, I apologize. I think the "idea" is ignorant b/c people choose to live here for various reasons whether it be for the education, work, family ties, etc. To some it's just not that clean cut...taxes are high, if you dont like it move. It's just not that easy for some to pick up and leave. If I did, I would have noone...neither would my kids. That is not the life I want for them...to not be raised around family and friends that love them which I think is also an important part of a child's life. As much as teachers are sick of people complaining about their salaries, I am sick of hearing people say it's LI taxes are high, deal with it. There is more to it than that!

ITA on every point here....this is why we chose to stay on LI, b/c of education, family, friends, etc...and when we do have children at least they will have too...like you said. Also, we know taxes are high, and willing to accept it. Would it be nicer if they weren't? Of course, but that is the case and we're willing to deal with it. However, we did choose to move to Suffolk County though b/c taxes tend to be a bit less there and you tend to at least get more land for what your paying....just our preference.

Yes, I do. We have a great life. We are sacrificing because we do not have children yet and are saving as much money as we can. We have been on several great vacations recently - Australia, Mexico, and St. Lucia. We prioritize our time together but in order to own a home at 25, we both have to work really hard. We have every weekend together and breaks. And he works 3 jobs because ... are you ready? This is where the pity party starts! We are teachers! lol We need the extra income. We have been dating since we were 16 and have literally been saving since then! Its hard to make ends meet here, maybe one day we wont, but my point is, Im NOT going to sit here and complain about the high taxes. It is what it is.

Re: ** If you do not like the high taxes on Long Island ...

okay so you choose to keep paying more and more taxes with out question while more and more families leave LI because of them. Then what? Let's see more renter's then anything (renter's typically don't pay taxes, i know i don't and this is the reason we haven't purchase a home yet because we are figuring where we can afford) more economic downturned areas - vacant homes = no local business = no tax revenue and your house value takes a dive again!

Oh and for the teacher's (since this spawned from that topic) that bubble will burst soon enough, its just like the Police, notice they aren't hiring any new cops in suffolk county? They dismantled highway and are consolidating. Teacher's will be facing this maybe not this year or the next but soon enough. People can't afford to pay teacher's salaries and benefit packages even knowing teachers are important to everyone but at one point if the economy doesn't bounce back everyone needs to take a hit (including educators.) Just like the US Post office will not be hiring, most state/county positions are disappearing and the ones that are out there are limited and the benefit packages are not as great as they used to be. Are average state employees complaining - NO only complaint is if we don't get our 3% pay raise which it looks like we are not. So we keep finding ways to cut down spending, just like the school needs too. A balance needs to be made on cost of living, taxes and income.

Well your school taxes will be going up again about 4% this year which is the lowest increase in the past few years for our school district Chat Icon

The idea of not being able to do anything about it is where much of this problem stems from. People kept quiet for too long.

I agree with you. I really do. I guess I do NOT see a solution in the future. I really believe it is only going to get worse and I think we all need to plan for that.

Its just unfair, of course everyone wants to live in a good area with good schools and good people, but when will it be enough, if taxes keep increasing they will soon be over 20k a year for most home on LI

And when those homes become abandoned and forclosed who pays the taxes then?
The neighborhood will defin go down in value if there are abandoned homes with squatters living in them

there is just no way it can keep going on like this without something very very bad happening

something that you say before you say what you believe to be the most important fact of a situation. Its called an idiom ...

An idiom is a phrase whose meaning cannot be determined by the literal definition of the phrase itself, but refers instead to a figurative meaning that is known only through common use

totally agree! they will get higher and its a shame- we live in a coop in queens- we could have afforded a house in long island, but certainly not the taxes- which dh refers to as another mortgage and they are.

By the way- I am in the best school district in queens and pay a 1/4 of the taxes I would in li

Re: ** My opinion, Taxes on Long Island will only get higher!

This is why I rent and probably will for a long time. With taxes in many areas being not that much less than what I pay for housing including; a pool, landscaper, super, heat and hot water. I think to buy a house for us right now is a waste. And as a renter we do pay taxes. My rent was increased because our property tax increased but at least I know what I will be paying. Maybe when I have a school aged child I will think differently but for now I am happy. I'm gald this topic was brought up. I wish it went a different way.

Re: ** My opinion, Taxes on Long Island will only get higher!

I just don't get it! Why do teachers take this SO personally?

Yes, LI is expensive but don't people paying the taxes have a say into this. Is it "pay and just shut up"?

The problem is not teachers per se. It's the whole concept. People stealing money from the system (ie. Roslyn scandal to just name one!). Teachers "admitting" here having to spend ALL the money allowed in a matter of seconds or it's "lost". The money is so poorly managed.

Listen, I have no problem with taxes. Nobody could really afford private tutors so most kids DO rely on the public system. But people are losing their job now. EVERYTHING is getting so expensive. It's time for EVERYBODY to understand that the money is just not there. So if that means to me that a superintendant, administrator, janitor, teacher is not getting a raise... well so be it!

Taxes will get raised. There is no doubt but there should not be this insane increase almost every year. Soon the middle class will have to move out of LI. There has to be a middle ground.

Re: ** My opinion, Taxes on Long Island will only get higher!

DH and i would love to move.

unfortunately that is not an option for us right now. he can request a transfer to another city/state but it could take a year or more for his job to actually okay the transfer.

and it would be STUPID for us to just say F it and move and hope that DH and i could both find another job wherever we chose to live.

so we are stuck because our PARENTS chose to stay on LI.

now i try not to throw too many pity parties but for some people, moving is just not a viable option. not that it's not "easy" but that it is just not possible.
